UK and US buyers snap up used Rolex and Patek Philippe ahead of tariffs

Fashion Network30-05-2025
Watch enthusiasts snapped up used Rolex SA and Patek Philippe SA timepieces at the end of April, splashing out before possible tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Watch dealer and trading platform Subdial typically records a surge in activity after customers receive their end-of-month paychecks. In April, post-payday trading volume jumped 160% above normal levels—well beyond the 112% average increase seen on previous paydays over the past year.
The volume growth was particularly strong in the U.S. and UK, Christy Davis, founder of London-based Subdial, said in an interview. 'People heard about the tariffs and went, 'Oh shoot, let's buy now,'' Davis said. 'They waited for payday and then sales volumes just went through the roof.'
The phenomenon echoed another trend seen in Switzerland, where watch exports jumped by nearly a fifth in April — with shipments to the U.S. more than doubling ahead of expanded tariffs threatened by Trump. Watches made from precious metals, steel and bimetallic materials — products also targeted by Trump — saw the most growth, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry.
The U.S. jump was likely a one-off response by exporters seeking to avoid higher tariffs, rather than a structural increase in demand, Jean-Philippe Bertschy, an analyst at Vontobel, said in a note. Swiss watch exports fell 6.4% to the rest of the world in the month, continuing a weak start to the year.
The secondary watch market has rebounded gradually since February's post-pandemic lows. Since reaching that nadir, the Bloomberg Subdial Watch Index has risen about 5.3% through late May, returning to levels last seen in October. It remains far from the levels it reached three years ago, when prices of used luxury watches surged as Covid lockdowns ended.

Walmart hikes annual forecast as low price focus draws shoppers

Walmart on Thursday raised its fiscal year sales and profit forecast, driven by strong demand from shoppers across all income levels, who have turned to the world's largest retailer as they worry about rising costs. The company's results show it has continued to benefit from growing price sensitivity among Americans, with revenue of $177.4 billion in the second quarter. Analysts on average were expecting $176.16 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Consumer sentiment has weakened due to fears of higher inflation, hitting the bottom lines of some retail chains, but Walmart's sales have remained resilient. The retailer expects annual sales to grow in the range of 3.75% to 4.75%, compared to its prior forecast of a 3% to 4% increase. Adjusted earnings per share is expected in the range of $2.52 to $2.62, compared to its previous range of $2.50 to $2.60. The Bentonville, Arkansas-based chain got a boost from a sharper online strategy as more customers relied on home deliveries. Its global e-commerce sales jumped 25% during the quarter, and it touted that one-third of deliveries from stores took three hours or less. Walmart's total US comparable sales rose 4.6%, fuelled by solid demand in grocery, health and wellness, and online sales, beating analysts' estimates of a 3.8% increase, according to data compiled by LSEG. Average spending at the till rose 3.1% from 0.6% last year. It logged 40% growth in marketplace sales, including electronics, automotive, toys, and media and gaming. The retailer had warned it would increase prices this summer to offset tariff-related costs on certain goods imported to the US, a move that drew criticism from President Donald Trump. Several other apparel, footwear, and packaged goods retailers have issued similar warnings in response to import tariffs. A day earlier, Target warned of tariff-induced cost pressures, even as it reiterated that price increases would be considered only as a last resort. Two-thirds of Walmart's US sales were from domestically-sourced products, executives had said last quarter, which gave it some insulation from tariffs compared to competitors. Walmart's projection of third-quarter sales at $168 billion was below Wall Street estimates for sales of $176.33 billion.

Mamas & Papas CEO steps down, firm names new leaders as investment ramps up

Long-established UK-based Mamas & Papas is gearing up for the Golden Quarter with 'significant' investment to grow the business at home and abroad with a new leadership team set to deliver the strategy as its CEO steps down. Backed by private equity firm BlueGem, the Huddersfield-based company 'wants to build the Mamas & Papas brand by leverage its customer data across its digital marketing and accelerate its international rollout to deliver its ambition'. It also plans to continue consolidating its position in the UK market, where it has a 20% share, through its multi-channel store and online model. Although the company didn't expand further on its plans, the new strategy will be executed under the guidance of new leadership team. The group's CFO Sarah Ashby is not only promoted to COO, but also becomes interim CEO to replace chief executive Nathan Williams who departs after seven years in the post. Williams is now set 'to pursue non-executive and advisory opportunities after a career spanning almost 30 years in senior management'. The company said that during his tenure, Williams 'oversaw the build of a significant UK concessions business, international partnerships and the brand's purpose-driven initiatives'. It added that recruitment of a new CEO was under way and would be announced shortly. Meanwhile Steve Parkin, former CEO of peer Mayborn Group and its Tommee Tippee brand, has joined as chairman, bringing his 'extensive experience in scaling international businesses in the nursery sector'. Ashby and Parkin will spearhead the development of the new strategic plan. Parkin said: 'I've been supporting the board behind the scenes in an advisory capacity over the past few months. During that time, I've come to both admire the business that the team has built and be excited by the potential we have to scale further at home but in particular overseas.' He added: 'Supported by a new CEO in due course, I'm confident we have the right plan and the right people to accelerate our growth and become the trusted, internationally-recognised brand for parenting around the world.' The company currently operates over 60 stores in the UK – including 40 concessions in M&S and Next — plus over 30 overseas concessions with partners including El Corte Ingles in Spain, MAP Active in Indonesia, Central Department Store Group in Thailand and Myers in Australia. In its most recent set of filed accounts, the business reported a 7.1% rise in sales for the 12 months to 31 March 2024 of £154.3 million.
