Michael Dunlop seals top spot in qualifying to boost hopes of Supersport glory at Southern 100
The Ballymoney rider jumped up the leaderboard after limited laps in Monday's practice session, which was halted by a red flag crash involving French rider Yann Galli.
In an update on Tuesday, the Southern 100 organisers said Galli had been transferred to a hospital in the UK and described his condition as 'comfortable and stable'.
Racing was due to get under way on Tuesday night around the 4.25-mile Billown course, but the first Senior race for Superbikes did not go ahead after some riders, including Dunlop and Michael Sweeney, signalled that conditions were unsuitable after completing their sighting lap.
Rain showers and fading light after qualifying ended ultimately wiped out the planned two-race schedule.
The Superbike machines were ushered back into the paddock and Clerk of the Course Giles Olley said he had taken on board the views of three senior riders, who had been selected to give their feedback.
The less powerful Supertwin machines were given the green light to race shortly before 9.00pm, but the red flag came out after the opening lap when rain began to fall.
Rob Hodson was leading at the time on the SMT Racing Paton from Davey Todd (Milenco by Padgett's Paton) at the time of the stoppage.
Earlier, Dunlop lapped at 110.243mph in Supersport qualifying to secure pole by just over half a second on his Ducati from Todd (Milenco by Padgett's Honda).
Cork's Mike Browne was third fastest on the BPE by Russell Racing Yamaha followed by Ulsterman Paul Jordan (Jackson Racing Honda).
In the Superbike qualifying session, Todd picked up where he left off on Monday, leading the way on the 8TEN Racing BMW at 115.644mph.
Dean Harrison (Honda Racing UK) was around half a second in arrears in second place after lapping at 115.159mph, while Manx rider Nathan Harrison maintained his impressive form on the H&H Motorcycles Honda to go third fastest (114.634mph).
Dunlop was fourth on his MD Racing BMW with a speed of 112.908mph.
Todd, who is the reigning Solo champion at the event following a hard-earned win over Dunlop in 2024, said there was more to come from his BMW.
'I'm happy enough and I was just trying to navigate traffic and get a couple of laps in early before we hit traffic,' Todd said.
'The bike is working well and the team is doing a great job but we're missing a sprocket, so the gearing is wrong, but the bike's working alright and it will be even better when we get the sprocket we need."
Wigan's Hodson was fastest in the Supertwin session at 104.957mph from Todd (104.781mph), with Jordan – who won his maiden race at the North West 200 in the Supertwin class in May – third on the Jackson Racing Aprilia.
Practice and qualifying has now been completed at the Southern 100 with racing scheduled to commence on Wednesday evening when the first Superbike, Supersport, Supertwin and Sidecar races are on the programme.
The meeting concludes on Thursday with a packed day of racing in the morning and afternoon, including the blue-riband Solo Championship race.

Man Utd ratings: Mbeumo and Cunha have Red Devils fans excited, but Ugarte worryingly miles off the pace

Ruben Amorim's side twice squandered leads on the night, but still did enough to win the Premier League Summer Series. Iliman Ndiaye levelled for the Toffees before half-time, profiting on a poor mistake by Manuel Ugarte to score. A brilliant strike by Mason Mount might have won it for United, but for Ayden Heaven's freak own goal 15 minutes from time. Here is how SunSport's Martin Lipton rated each Red Devil in Atlanta. READ MORE IN FOOTBALL MAN UTD 2 EVERTON 2 Amorim rues bizarre own goal but draw enough to win Summer Series Altay Bayindir - 5 Keeper's United future is decidedly uncertain and all the reasons for that were again in evidence. Slow reactions to Garner's free-kick should have been punished by O'Brien although he could do nothing about Ndiaye's strike. United need a reliable back-up to Andre Onana. It's hard to make a case for the Turk deserving that responsibility. Leny Yoro - 7 Third start in a row for the French, a clear sign that Amorim has him in mind to be the right-sided defensive starter. Too often, when asked to defend, United stand off their men rather than forcing errors. The Dutchman is unlikely to ever change at this stage in his career and you can envisage him and Maguire being in and out of the team all season. Strikers with genuine pace might be licking their lips. Luke Shaw - 6 England veteran will probably be the man in possession on the left of the defensive trio for the start of the season and his emphatic backing for Amorim was a significant pointer of dressing room buy-in. But Shaw will know this was not one of his more persuasive performances as he seemed ill at ease whenever Everton opted to run at him. A real threat going forward yet his defensive weaknesses - clear once again in the 'Big Peach' - will surely be targeted by opponents as the season wears on. Can you risk him against the top Premier League sides? Manuel Ugarte - 4 The Uruguayan insists he is now ready for the Premier League. He will have to be better prepared than he was in Atlanta - as he was nowhere near good enough. Everton appeared to feel they could force errors by putting him under pressure. They were not wrong, catching him in possession for Ndiaye's equaliser. This system will always see the most defensive midfielder exposed at times. 7 Manuel Ugarte endured an evening to forget Credit: Getty Kobbie Mainoo - 5 Amorim is adamant the England midfielder can make a genuine first team claim and that he is fitter and more mobile after the pre-season campaign. Yet it is hard to make the case that Mainoo has progressed over the past 12 months. Still not entirely sure what sort of player he is going to be or if he can fit this United shape.. Diogo Dalot - 6 Portuguese defender, one of the six-man 'leadership group', started on the left - although that would make him Dorgu's likely understudy. Did make one really key intervention in front of his own goal as simple centres from Everton left United looking more than vulnerable and happier when moved to the right for the second half. Bryan Mbeumo - 7 First outing in a United short for the £71m recruit from Brentford, who drifted off the right hand side with purpose and penetration. Superb instant switch of play led to the penalty and his willingness to forage on either flank was evidence that the Cameroonian will instantly upgrade United's forward threat. Would have loved to cap his display with a goal but understandably has debut run-out restricted to 45 minutes. 7 Bryan Mbeumo made his first outing in Man Utd colours Credit: AP Bruno Fernandes - 7 A third goal of the US Tour and second from the spot for the skipper, who is expected to reject the latest Saudi offer and remain at United, although if Sesko is bought he will have to play deeper than he did last night. Saying that, the way he played in and around Mbeumo and Cunha suggested United might not have to sign the Slovenian to have real attacking threat, with Fernandes showing creativity and enterprise throughout although spat with Ndiaye was utterly needless. Matheus Cunha 7 The Brazilian was asked to fill the central attacking role, rather than playing off the front man, although the trident gave him the opportunity to roam at times. Prodded wide of the far post when he might have done better early on but the run in behind was excellent. The feeling remains he is a scorer of great goals more than a great goal scorer. United surely need someone who can do the ugly stuff in front of the net. 7 Matheus Cunha showed flashes of brilliance Credit: Getty Subs: Patrick Dorgu (for Mbeumo, 46) 7 One of the stand-out successes of the US Tour and his entrance on the left saw Dalot switch flanks and Amad move further forward. Instantly improved the United left with the ball. Ayden Heaven (for Yoro, 57) 6 Teenager walked into a defence that was being worryingly stretched and did his best to bring more security. Own goal was not his fault at all. Harry Maguire (for Shaw, 57) 6 A little bit of calmness is always welcome. Been there, got the tee-shirt. May not have the starting shirt, though. Mason Mount (for Mainoo, 57) 8 Mount is desperate for an injury-free campaign and goals like he produced to put United back in front win this one will only help his cause. Terrific finish from 16 yards. Casemiro (for Ugarte, 72) 6 Brazilian cannot lose the pace he never had. And surely he is smarter and more streetwise than Ugarte. 6 Rasmus Hojlund (for Cunha, 72) 6 Dane knows his United days may be numbered, even if that is against his will. All he can do is try to prove Amorim he can do a job. Tyler Fredricson (for De Ligt, 88) 6 A late run-out for the youngster. Something more for him to remember from his fortnight Stateside

Newcastle identify Benjamin Sesko transfer alternative as Man Utd hold talks with striker
Newcastle and Manchester United are both keen on landing RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko but the Magpies have now eyed up PSG's Goncalo Ramos as a possible forward target Newcastle are keeping tabs on PSG's Goncalo Ramos as they weigh up potential striker options which also involve Manchester United target Benjamin Sesko. The RB Leipzig frontman has emerged as a player who is wanted by Newcastle and the Red Devils this week, with the former seeing the Slovenian as a possible replacement for Alexander Isak, who is now on Liverpool's radar as he considers his options. Newcastle have seen an opening offer for Sesko rejected and are discussing the possibility of pursuing Ramos at PSG, with the French side open to his exit. The Magpies considered the Portuguese forward as an option three years ago before they signed Isak. Ramos was then at Benfica, but later joined the French champions. He is by no means a regular starter in Paris though and the striker, still only 24, is being considered as a target at St James' Park after scoring 33 goals from 86 matches at the Parc des Princes. Newcastle's priority target is Sesko, but they will look elsewhere if negotiations head south, reports the Daily Mail. Eddie Howe's side saw a bid of £69.8m including add-ons turned down. Discussions continue over the structure of that deal whilst those in Manchester have not made an offer. Sesko is open to both projects at the respective Premier League clubs, although it is Newcastle who can offer him Champions League football for the upcoming season. The Slovenian was absent from Leipzig's pre-season friendly loss to Atalanta on Saturday due to his expected departure. He has reportedly told his team-mates that he will be leaving, as per Sky in Germany. Marcel Schafer, RB Leipzig's managing director for sport, has confirmed that interested parties have expressed their desire to take the player. He said: "We won't go into detail on that but when I say that several clubs have shown strong interest and have made approaches, it's obvious what has happened." United have already added Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha this summer but want a No 9. It is understood that Leipzig are interested in United's Rasmus Hojlund and have considered a possible loan. The German club had proposed taking Hojlund on loan as part of any any deal that takes Sesko to Manchester. Newcastle are also interested in Brentford's Yoane Wissa, who was not part of Brentford's squad for their friendly against QPR on Saturday, as he looks to move away from the west London outfit. Enzo Maresca makes shock U-turn and tries to block Chelsea transfer
Enzo Maresca has held fresh talks with Christopher Nkunku in a bid to convince the misfiring Chelsea forward to stay at Stamford Bridge. Nkunku was expected to be sold by Chelsea following another disappointing season at the Premier League club. Chelsea spent £52m to sign Nkunku from RB Leipzig in 2023 but the France international missed most of his first season in west London through injury. Nkunku was back fit last season but still endured a disappointing campaign, contributing just three goals in the Premier League. Chelsea fans have been hugely underwhelmed by Nkunku's form at the club considering he was named the Bundesliga Player of the Season in 2021-22 and was the league's top goalscorer before his arrival. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. The Blues were open to offers for Nkunku during the January transfer window and were expected to cash in on the 27-year-old this summer. Chelsea have bolstered Maresca's squad with several new signings this summer so the sale of Nkunku would give them a chance to make room for the new additions and raise some funds. However, according to L'Equipe, Maresca recently held talks with Nkunku and made it clear that he could still be part of his project at Stamford Bridge. Maresca appreciates Nkunku's profile and knows squad depth will be needed as Chelsea look to challenge Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City for the title while competing in Europe. It is unclear whether Nkunku will settle for a rotational role in Maresca's squad as he has aspirations of making France's squad for next summer's World Cup. Appearances: 65Goals: 6 Assists: 2 His representatives are also aware of interest from several possible suitors, recently holding talks with Serie A giants Inter Milan. French outlet L'Equipe say clubs in the bottom-half of the Premier League have also expressed interest in a deal but Nkunku intends to play for a top-level club. Nkunku was linked with Bayern Munich and Manchester United earlier in the summer but those two clubs appear to be focusing on other targets. In an exclusive interview with Metro back in April, former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf urged both the club and Nkunku to 'cut their losses' and go their separate ways this summer. 'I think they need to cut their losses and go their separate ways,' the ex-Chelsea centre-back said. 'It's best for the club but also the future of the player. Careers are pretty short so you have to react quickly if it doesn't work. More Trending 'And it can happen like this – sometimes the chemistry doesn't work. I was very happy to see him come to Chelsea, but it's never worked. 'He's never been able to settle down, maybe because the position he's been offered wasn't the right one. 'It's always difficult to come from a family club like Leipzig to a club where you have to perform and the pressure is one you always. I had that when I moved from Strasbourg to Chelsea and it's a big task if you're not able to cope with the situation. 'It's never worked for him but he's still a good player. He will have to rebound but we've seen that before with players like Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah when they left.' Chelsea have two pre-season friendlies against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan next weekend before their Premier League campaign starts on August 17 against Crystal Palace.
