West Godavari Red Cross chapter wins gold for outstanding services
The West Godavari district Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) chapter has been awarded gold medal for outstanding services in Andhra Pradesh for the year 2024-25.
District Collector and Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) President Chadalavada Nagarani will receive the medal from Governor S. Abdul Nazeer during the World Red Cross Day celebrations on May 8 in Vijayawada .
Ms. Nagarani announced that the IRCS West Godavari Chapter will inaugurate a centre to provide medical treatment to Thalassemia patients in the district on May 8.

Central team inspects preparedness to implement ₹1,400 crore worth JJM projects in West Godavari
A central team-led by senior official Chinmay Pundalikaro Gotmare has inspected the preparedness to complete ₹1,400 crore worth projects sanctioned under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in West Godavari district. The team which visited the region on Monday (June 2) inspected the water quality, density and other parameters at the source point and inquired about the prevalence of waterborne and kidney ailments in Penugonda Mandal. In an official release, West Godavari Collector Chadalavada Nagarani said that the team had inspected water grid at Dowleswaram barrage from where the water is being sourced for drinking purpose to some parts of the West Godavari district. Rural Water Supply Department Superintendent Engineer S. Trinadhbabu, Groundwater Department Deputy Director K. Gangadhar and other officials were present.

Bone marrow transplant surgeries at Mangalagiri AIIMS soon
1 2 3 Vijayawada: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Mangalagiri will soon launch bone marrow transplant (BMT) surgeries. The procedure is the only way to provide relief to patients suffering from Thalassemia (a type of genetic disorder that affects haemoglobin production, leading to anemia, particularly among children. BMT surgeries are currently available in only 11 top hospitals across the country. The govt has identified that 2,129 children from across the state are suffering from Thalassemia. Its treatment in India involves a combination of therapies depending on the severity of the condition, with blood transfusions and iron chelation being common for moderate to severe cases. "Bone marrow transplants are a curative option, especially for severe cases with a matched donor. However, this facility is not widely available due to its high costs. Families mostly depend on regular blood transfusions to provide healthy red blood cells and haemoglobin, alleviating the symptoms of anemia," said a senior AIIMS doctor. As BMT requires specialized facilities and expertise, the Centre has identified AIIMS-Mangalagiri to start the services. He said stem cell or bone marrow transplant involves replacing the patient's diseased bone marrow with healthy stem cells from a compatible donor, which can cure the disease. A matched donor is important for effective bone marrow transplants. BMT surgeries can cost anywhere between Rs 8 lakh to Rs 40 lakh, which is unaffordable for many families. A fully matched sibling or parent donor is ideal, but finding a match is also challenging. "Haplo-identical transplants, where the donor is not a fully matched sibling or parent, are also increasingly used," said a senior official of National Health Mission. The Karnataka govt recently included BMT in Karnataka Arogya Seva linked with the Ayushman Bharat scheme. The state health department carried out a screening in several districts and identified seven children with Thalassemia major and sent them for BMT at Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bengaluru. Students take out awareness rally on No Tobacco Day
Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Srikakulam District Chairman P. Jaganmohana Rao on Saturday urged people to say no to Tobacco and other toxic products as they would ruin their physical and financial health. He said that IRCS would help people in leading a normal life with its deaddiction centres assisted by doctors voluntarily in Srikakulam. In a programme organised here on No Tobacco Day, Mr. Rao said that 'No Smoking Day' was being observed since 1987 owing to a call given by the World Health Organisation. NHRC and Kinjarapu Yerrannaidu College of Agriculture Science jointly organised Anti Tobacco rally in SSR Puram of Etcherla mandal in the district. The students vowed to create awareness on the adverse impact of tobacco and drugs. Dean of the College K. Moshe, IRCS Public Relations Officer P. Chaitanya Kumar, IRCS representatives K. Satyanarayana, G. Ramana, Uma Shankar and others participated in the rally.
