Telangana governor Jishnu Dev Varma lauds Red Cross, launches stem cell donor drive

HYDERABAD: Governor Jishnu Dev Varma lauded the tireless efforts and services of the Red Cross Society in the state. He attended a function at Raj Bhavan on Thursday, where he participated in World Red Cross Day and World Thalassemia Day 2025. Jishnu Dev underscored the significance of these twin observances, describing them as a call to conscience, urging society to act with compassion, solidarity, and a deep sense of humanity. This year's theme for World Red Cross Day was 'On the Side of Humanity'. At the event, he lauded the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Telangana, for its unwavering humanitarian service since its inception in 1920. He also stressed the need for volunteerism across all sections of society to serve the vulnerable and uphold human dignity. With a membership of over 45,000 across all 33 districts of the state, the Red Cross Society plays a vital role in organising blood donations, extending medical and health outreach, supporting orphanages and elder care homes, and providing timely assistance during natural disasters. Jishnu Dev appreciated the dedicated efforts of district chairpersons and volunteers who continue to uphold the Red Cross mission even in the remotest parts of the state. He paid tributes to the courage and resilience of young thalassemia warriors, who depend on regular blood transfusions for survival. He commended the work of Dhatri, an organisation that has brought hope to families by promoting awareness and stem cell donation for those suffering from this genetic disorder. The governor launched the Blood Stem Cell Donor Registration Drive. The staff of the Raj Bhavan voluntarily gave swab samples and registered themselves as stem cell donors. M Dana Kishore, Principal Secretary to the Governor, and others were present.

VIJAYAWADA: Governor S Abdul Nazeer, who also serves as the president of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), AP State Branch, emphasised the pivotal role of the Red Cross in providing blood to the needy during the World Red Cross Day and International Thalassemia Day celebrations held at Raj Bhavan's Durbar Hall in Vijayawada on Thursday. Addressing the gathering, he stated that the Red Cross AP State Branch operates 20 blood centres, collecting over 65,000 units annually and issuing more than 1 lakh units of blood. He noted that one-third of these units are supplied free of cost to underprivileged patients undergoing treatment in government hospitals. Earlier, the Governor virtually inaugurated the Red Cross Thalassemia Blood Transfusion Centre at the Srikakulam District Red Cross Blood Centre and lauded the initiative for supporting children and individuals requiring critical transfusion services. He also directed officials to expand transfusion services at all blood centres equipped with component facilities. In another significant move, the Governor unveiled a plaque of the Red Cross Child Care, Women Welfare & Skill Development Centre in Kakinada. During the event, he presented Red Cross awards and medals to district collectors P Prasanthi (Rajahmundry), DK Balaji (Krishna), O Anand (Nellore), G Raja Kumari (Nandyal), Sagili Shan Mohan (Kakinada), P Ranjit Basha (Kurnool), C Naga Rani (Bhimavaram), and J Venkata Murali (Bapatla) for their exceptional contributions to the Red Cross movement. First Lady Sameera Nazeer, Dr M Hari Jawaharlal, Secretary to the Governor, YD Rama Rao, Chairman, and AK Parida, CEO & General Secretary of Red Cross Andhra Pradesh State Branch, along with other officials and Red Cross members, attended the event.

Nandyal: In recognition of her outstanding services towards the development of the Red Cross, Nandyal District Collector G Raja Kumari has been conferred with the prestigious Governor's Award and Gold Medal. The awards were presented during the World Red Cross Day and World Thalassemia Day celebrations held on Thursday at Raj Bhavan in Amaravati. In a press release the authorities have stated that the honour was bestowed by the Governor of Andhra Pradesh and President of the Indian Red Cross Society, Andhra Pradesh State Branch, S Abdul Nazeer, along with First Lady Sameera Nazeer. The event celebrated exemplary contributions to the Red Cross movement across the State, where a total of eight district Collectors were recognized for their exceptional service and dedicated support. As part of this recognition, Raja Kumari was felicitated for her remarkable efforts in advancing the initiatives of the Red Cross in Nandyal district. Speaking on the occasion, the Collector noted that a state-of-the-art Indian Red Cross Society Blood Storage Center has recently been inaugurated in the district to enhance emergency healthcare services. She also announced that a generic medical shop, aimed at providing affordable medicines to the public, will soon be established under the aegis of the Red Cross. Furthermore, she revealed plans to strengthen the Youth Red Cross and form a dedicated Red Cross Army under the district committee to offer swift emergency services. Initiatives are also underway to extend doorstep medical services to fishing communities and Chenchu tribal families through the Red Cross. Red Cross State chairman YD Ramarao, Treasurer Ramachandra Raju, General Secretary AK Fareeda, and Nandyal Chairman Dastagiri Parla and others attended the event Later in the day, the Governor virtually inaugurated the Red Cross Thalassemia Blood Transfusion Center at the Srikakulam District Red Cross Blood Center from Raj Bhavan.

"You are not just the leaders of tomorrow; you are the change-makers of today. The challenges of our time—climate change, health crises, and social inequity—require your energy and idealism," he also stressed the importance of nurturing empathy from a young age by instilling values of compassion and service at home and in schools.
