Italian authorities resumed their search Thursday for migrants missing at sea after two boats sank off the island of Lampedusa, with 27 people already confirmed dead. Sixty survivors were brought to shore after the tragedy on Wednesday, all of them "in good health", according to a spokesman for Italy's Red Cross, which manages the migrant reception centre on Lampedusa. He told AFP the bodies of 23 of the victims had already been recovered. Efforts were underway to try to identify them. The coastguard had on Wednesday night put the toll at 26, but this rose to 27 overnight, according to the UN. "At least 27 people have drowned in a tragic shipwreck near Lampedusa," said Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, in a statement on social media. Over 700 refugees and migrants have now died in 2025 in the Central Mediterranean. "All responses -- rescue at sea, safe pathways, helping transit countries and addressing root causes -- must be strengthened," he said. Lampedusa, just 90 miles (145 kilometres) off the coast of Tunisia, is often the first port of call for people trying to reach Europe in leaky or overcrowded boats. According to Italy's coastguard, the two boats that sank on Wednesday had left Tripoli, Libya, earlier in the day. The Red Cross, citing survivor testimony, said they left Zawiya to the west. One of the boats started taking on water, causing people to climb onto the other boat, which itself then capsized, the coastguard said. Five vessels were involved in the search for survivors, including one from the EU's Frontex border agency, alongside a helicopter and two aircraft.

ROME: At least 22 migrants died after two boats overturned in the Mediterranean on Wednesday, with more still missing and some 60 survivors, humanitarian agencies said. The disaster was the latest in the dangerous central Mediterranean, where most migrants seeking to reach Europe cross in leaky or overcrowded boats, especially in the warm weather of the summer months. The number of people confirmed dead was currently at 22, a spokesman for Italy's Red Cross, which manages Lampedusa's migrant reception centre, told AFP. Fifty-six men and four women survived the disaster, the Red Cross said. It said it was still unclear how many people had been on the two boats that left from Zawiya, Libya, west of Tripoli on Tuesday evening. Details of the disaster were scarce but Italian news agency ANSA said that after one of the boats that departed together began to capsize, some migrants moved to the other, which became overloaded and began taking on water, according to survivors' accounts. ANSA said among the first to be transported to the Lampedusa mortuary were the bodies of a newborn, three children, two men and two women. "Deep anguish for the umpteenth shipwreck off the coast of Lampedusa, where UNHCR is now assisting the survivors. It looks to be 20 bodies found and as many missing," wrote Filippo Ungaro, spokesman for the UN Refugee Agency, on social media. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi confirmed the disaster, saying the shipwreck occurred 14 nautical miles from Lampedusa.

Andhra Pradesh governor launches climate plan, Amaravati plastic-free drive
GUNTUR: Governor S Abdul Nazeer on Tuesday launched the Andhra Pradesh Climate Action Plan and the Amaravati Plastic Free City Campaign, aiming to make Amaravati the country's first single-use plastic-free capital. The Governor, who also serves as president of the Indian Red Cross Society (AP State Branch), called for a united stand against single-use plastics and urged citizens to turn commitment into action for a cleaner, greener State. He announced that one lakh Youth Red Cross volunteers will reach 10 lakh families across Andhra Pradesh to spread awareness about environmental protection and practical steps to reduce plastic use. Guntur has been chosen as the pilot project site by the International Committee of the Red Cross, Geneva. Nazeer said Amaravati's success could serve as a national model for other capitals and major cities. Calling single-use plastics 'a ticking time bomb for the planet,' he appealed to students, youth, and community organisations to lead awareness campaigns, promote eco-friendly alternatives, and ensure responsible waste disposal. He commended the Guntur District Branch of the Indian Red Cross Society and P Ramachandra Raju for their initiative and meticulous planning, lauding the involvement of schools, corporates, and students. About 50,000 students from 500 schools in Guntur are participating in the mission. He urged Vice-Chancellors of all universities to form Red Cross Climate Action Groups in every college and design environment-friendly programmes. The Governor inaugurated a Statewide awareness campaign, directing Red Cross district units to intensify activities.
