Match delayed as England cricketers ride lime bikes to the stadium in London traffic chaos
Both sides got stuck on their team buses en route to The Oval in south London on Tuesday, with England's players deciding to get off and ride bikes to the ground instead.
Traffic-light failures in the Vauxhall area of London, about 15 minutes from The Oval, were reportedly to blame for the chaos.
While they arrived in enough time to conduct a thorough pre-match warm-up under a grey sky, the West Indies players stayed on their bus and arrived at around 12:40 p.m. local time — 10 minutes after the scheduled time for the toss.
'We probably should have walked,' West Indies captain Shai Hope said, laughing.
Uncertainty permeated the ground as England players quite laughably warmed up with no opposition in sight for some time, like a scene out of a junior cricket match.
'The toss has been delayed because, basically, we don't have two teams, would you believe it,' Ian Ward explained pre-game.
'We have an England cricket team — we do not have a West Indies cricket team. The traffic in and around The Oval ... all around, is absolutely gridlock.'
West Indies stayed overnight at a hotel some five kilometres from The Oval, Britain's PA news agency reported.
The toss was delayed by 40 minutes and was won by England, who chose to bowl first in an attempt to take advantage of overcast conditions.
The ECB released a statement while waiting for the West Indies to arrive.
'Due to a delayed arrival of one of the playing teams, who are stuck in heavy traffic north of the river, the scheduled start of play will be delayed,' the statement read.
'Once all members of the playing teams arrive, the match officials will co-ordinate updated timings and discuss any impact on the schedule of play.'
The match started 30 minutes late.
England had already clinched the three-match series after wins in Birmingham and Cardiff.

‘Sack him on spot': Premier League mess explodes as Newcastle legend rips Alexander Isak
Alexander Isak's transfer saga is a 'f***ing mess' and his agent should be 'sacked on the spot', claims Newcastle legend Alan Shearer. Isak, 25, is locked in a tense stand-off with his club having gone on strike in an attempt to secure a move to Liverpool. Watch the biggest Aussie sports & the best from overseas LIVE on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? Join now and get your first month for just $1. The Swede released a bombshell statement last night, claiming that the Toon had 'broken promises' over a transfer away. Newcastle swiftly responded, denying that they ever made such a commitment. Toon idol Shearer, 55, has been left baffled by the whole sorry episode. Speaking to Betfair, the former St James' Park hero said: 'I mean, oh my God, what a f***ing mess his agent has made of this, honestly, The Sun reports. 'If I was him, I'd get his agent in a room and sack him on the spot immediately, because he is meant to be giving him the advice to sign that sixâ€'year deal and there's no getâ€'out clause. I mean, it's ridiculous. 'And to take anyone's word in football … it's nonsensical to say that someone said, 'Oh, I'll be able to get out at the end of the season.' Really? I mean, come on.' Isak is currently refusing to play or train despite having three years remaining on his lucrative Magpies contract. On the striker's antics, Shearer added: 'It doesn't sit right with me, I don't like it. I don't like what (Yoane) Wissa's doing at Brentford, even if Newcastle were to sign him. 'It's not a good look on a player or an agent to not go out and train and not go out and play when you have a contract behind you. It's not a good look and it's not a good thing to do.' Isak has seemingly burned his bridges at St James' Park. But Shearer still thinks there could be a way back for him in Geordieland. The former England captain continued: 'If he were to apologise and get back into the group before the end of the transfer window, then there would be a way back for him. 'But if he's still here after the transfer window, I can't see how you come back from that. He clearly wants to get out and is willing to do anything to do that. 'The club obviously want what they want and what Eddie (Howe) wants, and they've clearly said that is to have a worldâ€'class player back into their squad for however long. 'Maybe that's a season, whatever it is, because Isak needs to be playing football. He can't sit and rot in the reserves for six to twelve months. 'It's very, very messy and it's not helping anyone, least of all Eddie Howe and the players, which are the most important thing.' Shearer's former Toon teammate Michael Owen has a different stance on Isak. Owen, who famously does not see eye-to-eye with his former teammate and manager Shearer, told Chronicle Live: 'This whole scenario is an interesting one because nine times out of 10 when a move comes about it's normally a club forcing a player and nobody's bothered, nobody says anything despite any kids that are in school or any families that have settled in an area or anything else like that. 'Nobody cares really about a footballer. But when it's on the other foot, it's really interesting to see that everybody, you know, the whole world goes into meltdown and how dare somebody try and force a move through? I'm not going to sit here and criticise Isak. 'I wouldn't have done that myself in terms of the actions he's taken, but I do get that he's a great player that wants to get to the top of his game and he's obviously not being allowed the move that he's desperate for. 'And you get one short career and he's wanting to join probably the best team in the world at the moment. 'I get it from his point of view. 'It's just a sad situation when it's played out in the world's press and he's obviously not coming out well, let's say, from a reputational point of view.' Alexander Isak's full statement 'I'm proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the season for 2024-25. 'First and foremost I want to thank my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who has supported me along the way. 'I'm not at the ceremony tonight. With everything going on, it didn't feel right to be there. 'I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors. 'The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. 'To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. 'When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. 'That's where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.'

Sam Kerr set to start season with Chelsea, opens up on her aims after long injury lay-off
Sam Kerr has vowed to return to the top of the goalscoring lists in England as the Matildas captain prepares for a playing comeback more than 18 months in the making. The superstar striker is set to start the new Women's Super League season with Chelsea next month having recovered from the ACL injury she suffered during a training camp in January 2024. She's just one goal short of reaching 100 for her club, having scored 99 before being cut down with injury. It's been a protracted rehab that has kept her away from national duties, but her comeback looms as crucial for the Asian Cup chances of the Matildas when the tournament is played in Australia next March. Speaking with Chelsea media at a training camp in the Netherlands, Kerr expressed her strong desire to do what she has always done when she gets back on the pitch. 'My contribution is goals; it's as simple as that,' she said. 'For the last however many years, I've been within the top goalscorers, if not the top goalscorer in the team, and that's where I want to come back to. I've got high expectations of myself. 'I have a lot of confidence in my ability, so the contribution for me is straightforward. It's goals. That's what I'm here to do, and that's what I normally do, so there's no reason why I can't do it again.' In what was her first interview since returning to training, Kerr said she had been 'alone a lot' during her recovery, having also become a mother during her lay-off. 'During an injury, you're alone a lot,' Kerr said. 'So it's good to be back with the girls, just doing the same training sessions as them rather than solitary rehab sessions. Being in camp like this helps you get to know all the new faces. 'It's nice to be back with the girls, back on the pitch, and I'm excited. I'm most looking forward to being out there, scoring goals and having fun. Getting back to normal and being with the team is great, too.' Kerr will have a familiar face on her team when she returns to action after Chelsea signed her Matildas teammate Ellie Carpenter, whom she has helped settle into the club and life in London. 'I've felt at home at Chelsea regardless of whether there was another Aussie here or not, but it's nice to have someone to chat to about things from home that maybe the other girls would have no idea about,' she said. 'She's a great player and a great athlete. 'Chelsea's about winning, so I think everything we do here is about winning – from the standards at the training ground to what we do on the pitch. When you come to a club like Chelsea, sometimes that can be a culture shock. 'With new players, it's just about guiding them, but honestly, when I came here, I enjoyed it straight away because people just made me feel welcome and comfortable. With my personality and who I am as a leader, my role is to make the girls feel the same way and make sure they're enjoying themselves. 'People can perform at their very best when they're happy, comfortable and feel a part of the team.'

Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu are taking tennis to new heights
Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu are taking tennis to new heights. Alcaraz and Raducanu, both 22, have set pulses racing with the rumour mill running wild over their seemingly romantic connection. While both have attempted to pour cold water over the simmering rumours, one thing the pair have done is bring even more eyeballs to the sport. Tennis' popularity has never waned among the true fanatics, with ESPN's Wimbledon coverage this year generating some of its highest viewership since 2003. But luring in the non-sport lovers has been a bridge the sport has never truly been able to cross. Tennis attempted to bring in a wave of new fans by following in F1's footsteps with its own docu-series on Netflix called 'Break Point'. The show completely missed the mark with Netflix pulling the pin after season 2 due to poor ratings and 'concerns over access to the sport's leading players,' according to Stuart Fraser of the London Times. Alcaraz and Raducanu – dubbed Raducaraz by some fans – however have now captured the wider attention the tennis world was hoping for with fans hanging out for any update they can get. Ahead of their match at the US Open for the revamped mixed doubles event, Alcaraz made a frantic 965 kilometre dash to be by the Brit's side. After winning the Cincinnati Open on Tuesday, the Spaniard boarded a private jet to ensure he didn't stand his partner up in New York. The pair then poured fuel all over the dating rumours as they embraced and laughed throughout their opening round contest, showing remarkable chemistry throughout the match. It didn't take long for the pair to begin trending on X as fans packed out the stands to catch a glimpse of the duo. Tennis TV wrote on X: 'The Alcaraz and Raducanu era has officially arrived in New York.' Tennis journalist Chris Goldsmith added: 'It's all too much' alongside a love heart emoji. Brand strategist Dave Kang wrote: 'I've never seen doubles partners smile this much during a match, they seem to genuinely be having fun playing together. No wonder rumors are swirling that this chemistry means they're more than just friends.' Another wrote: 'Am I watching the start of a love story?'. A fifth added 'I think this could be tennis' hottest new couple.' The Raducaraz craze could have a similar effect on tennis like Taylor Swift has done for the NFL. The music megastar's relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce remains one of the biggest talking points around the league. While the NFL was already a gargantuan sport, it hadn't captured the attention of non-sport lovers. Swift changed all of that, almost overnight. Within a few months of their relationship going public, Swift took over the NFL and helped increase female viewership. Her presence at games drove numbers through the roof with spikes across all age demographics. Swift generated over $1 billion in brand value to the NFL even before Super Bowl took place in February, according to MarketWatch. Now Alcaraz and Raducanu are generating a similar effect with their rumoured relationship starting to garner even more attention than the game itself. Every time they step foot on the court or sit down in a press conference, the duo instantly become a trending topic. Such is the interest in the pair that worldwide search interest in the pair is up 2.2% in the last three months. The rumours started to swirl at Wimbledon in June when Raducanu was seen cheering on Alcaraz. But it went to new heights at Flushing Meadows with the duo even igniting the rumours on Instagram. Alcaraz uploaded several images from the pair's opening round clash as he captioned the post 'that was fun'. Raducanu however set pulses racing by commenting: 'Eres el mejor'. In English that means 'you are the best'. The upload from Alcaraz was enough to send fans wild, but it was the remark from the Brit that caused pandemonium. Comments exploded as fans hoped the duo would go public and confirm their relationship. Coach silences growing relationship rumours Despite the growing optimism among fans, the relationship has been called nothing more than friendly by Mark Petchey, Raducanu's former coach. 'They are just good friends. She's good friends with a lot of people out there on the tour. The media is going to be the media,' Petchey said to OLBG. 'Obviously, I know there's suggestions that they are going out. That's not the case. They're just good friends. The reality is they're only there to play tennis.' Raducanu was also keen to downplay the speculation, stating the duo are nothing more than good friends. 'I guess I'm like, it comes with the territory, people being so curious,' she said to The Guardian. 'It's always funny when people try to find something out, but I try not to read into it so much.' While all parties are adamant the spark between the pair is nothing more than a wholesome friendship ... the images from the US Open this week paint a completely different story. As the duo continue to generate hype and leave fans questioning what is going on, the buzz they're building has helped take tennis to new heights.
