Why Tom Cruise is unlike any other movie star

Yahoo12-05-2025

Tom Cruise is arguably the last true movie star. More than any of the other famous names in today's Hollywood, he's a one-man army when it comes to powering a film up the box office charts. As much as his character in the Mission: Impossible franchise is called Ethan Hunt, ultimately nobody thinks about him as anything other than Tom Cruise.
Cruise, though, has another trick up his sleeve that separates him from other A-listers. Alongside his clout as a marquee name who can sell anything, he has become a maestro of marketing as well as an incredibly gifted actor. Even in the social media age, he has shown over and over again that he can get a movie into the headlines — making sure everybody knows it's heading to cinemas.
He is currently promoting The Final Reckoning, which is being sold as his final appearance in the guise of Hunt. Cruise paid a visit to the UK last week and, not content with taking part in a discussion about his career, decided to hop up on to the roof of the BFI IMAX in Waterloo for good measure.
For the previous Mission: Impossible film, the entire marketing campaign leaned heavily on just one Cruise moment — "the biggest stunt in cinema history". On the first day of the shoot for the movie, Cruise jumped a motorbike off a ramp in Norway, launching himself into thin air — and he repeated the stunt six times, as if once wasn't terrifying enough.
It's one thing to do this stunt, but another entirely to have enough confidence in the film to give it away in the marketing campaign. By the time Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning made its way into cinemas in July 2023, anyone who had visited a multiplex at all that year had seen its biggest stunt a thousand times. But, this being Mission: Impossible, there were plenty more stunts on show in the actual movie and the motorbike moment spent most of the year in the headlines.
Ultimately, Dead Reckoning arrived into a summer box office dominated by the Barbenheimer phenomenon and, as a result, Dead Reckoning made just $571m (£433m) — not enough for one of the most expensive films ever made to break even, despite Cruise's best efforts.

But there were no sour grapes on Cruise's part because he's a devoted champion of not just his own movies, but cinema as a whole. In August 2020, he posted a video of himself heading to the cinema to see Christopher Nolan's time-bending thriller Tenet, at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic meant a lot of viewers were staying away from the multiplex. Cruise was then at the heart of the first big multiplex success of the post-pandemic era when Top Gun: Maverick made $1.5bn (£1.1bn) worldwide, earning headlines describing him as the "saviour of cinema".
Days before Dead Reckoning was about to hit cinemas in 2023, Cruise tweeted photos of himself and director Christopher McQuarrie with tickets to see Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. "This summer is full of amazing movies to see in theatres," he wrote.
Cruise did the same thing this year, sharing a picture on Instagram of his ticket for Michael B Jordan vampire movie Sinners. "Must see in a cinema and stay through the end credits," he wrote. Cruise is, of course, using his platform to market his own movie — he knows that every write-up will include a mention of The Final Reckoning — but he's also advocating for cinema as an art form.

Cruise's marketing is smart and shrewd, of course, but it never comes across as cynical. It's easy to believe in his earnest love for cinema and his equally earnest desire to test his body with adrenaline-fuelled stunts and spectacles. He appeared at the Stade de France during the closing ceremony of the 2024 Olympics, abseiling from the roof to mark the handover to Los Angeles as the 2028 hosts.
Casey Wasserman, president and chairperson of the LA28 committee, told Entertainment Weekly: "About five minutes into the presentation, [Cruise] goes: 'I'm in. But I'm only doing it if I get to do everything'."
Frankly, it feels a lot like this is the sort of thing Cruise would want to be doing with his day anyway, even if there wasn't a camera pointed at him. But that's at the heart of the mythology that makes Tom Cruise marketing dynamite. Everything feels like it's being done out of love, with the commercial benefit of it just emerging as a cheeky bonus.
There's nobody doing what he does in terms of marketing, willing to put his body on the line when the time comes and show off his cinemagoing diary as well. His eye for marketing has been honed over the last 15 years, starting arguably with the 2011 photo of him perched atop the world's tallest building while filming Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. It's enough to give anyone vertigo just looking at it.
He has discovered that the best way to market movies in the modern era is to lean into his movie star status and his reputation as the man with the biggest death wish in Hollywood. But what's truly fascinating is the way he uses that reputation and status to elevate and support other movies. A rising tide lifts all boats when it comes to cinema and, if it lifts them high enough, Tom Cruise will inevitably jump off.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will be released in UK cinemas on 21 May.

Ana de Armas & Tom Cruise Have Reportedly ‘Discussed' What Role Scientology Plays In Their Relationship

We all thought 2025 couldn't outdo itself when Elizabeth Hurley started canoodling with Billy Ray Cyrus, but Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas may just be the most unexpected celebrity couple of 2025. The Top Gun legend and the Cuban-born Oscar nominee have gone from helicopter drop-ins and Valentine's Day dates to sparking serious headlines — especially now that sources reveal they've had 'discussions' about how Scientology could shape their future together. For anyone catching up, this pairing felt a bit out-of-nowhere at first: Cruise is 62 and arguably Hollywood's most high-maintenance bachelor; she's 37, a Bond girl-turned-Marilyn Monroe, with a devout Catholic upbringing and a history of keeping her love life as locked down as Cruise's film sets. But these two have been spotted flying across Europe together (literally), making low-key exits from David Beckham's birthday bash, and appearing to dodge the paparazzi like it's their own personal Mission: Impossible. And while the two are reportedly connecting to discuss future projects, some insiders suggest there is more to what's going on between the two. More from SheKnows Tom Cruise Has Allegedly Offered His Reported New GF the Role of His Love Interest in a New Movie According to insiders who spoke with the Daily Mail, there's one thing they can't quite outmaneuver: religion. Cruise's long-standing ties to the Church of Scientology are public knowledge — and polarizing, to put it gently. He's one of the religion's most visible (and powerful) figures, and many point to Scientology as a key factor in his past divorces, including his split from Katie Holmes. Holmes famously sought sole custody of their daughter, Suri, who, by the way, dropped his surname and now goes by Suri Noelle. De Armas, on the other hand, hails from a modest, deeply religious family in Cuba. Raised in the Catholic Church, the Knives Out star still holds her values close. So while her jet-setting with Cruise might look carefree, the question of faith is reportedly weighing heavily behind the scenes. 'Ana was raised Catholic and her family are religious,' a source said. 'She knows that her family would not accept Tom because of his beliefs. Ana and Tom have discussed this.' The actress has always charted her own path, but even so, those close to her suspect she may be more flexible than expected. 'His Scientologist beliefs are not a deal breaker for Ana,' one insider added. 'She is her own woman. And honestly, no one would be surprised if she took up Scientology.' Whether she's about to go Clear or just keeping an open mind for the sake of love, one thing's for sure: the two are having some serious discussions. But if they plan to make it past the Cannes red carpet (Cruise's Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning premieres May 14), they might have to land on the same spiritual page of SheKnows 90 Incredible Shows on Netflix You Should Be Watching Right Now Everything Harry & Meghan Have Done Since Leaving the Royal Family These 9 Books Reveal Details About JFK Jr. & Carolyn Bessette That Were Never Known Before

Insiders Claim Tom Cruise May Want to Bury the Hatchet for Good With Ex Nicole Kidman by Doing This

Tom Cruise and his second ex-wife, Nicole Kidman, seemingly haven't interacted after their shock divorce. But now, it seems Cruise may want to bury the hatchet for good, all for their kids. Sources recently alleged to Heat World UK that after Cruise made that comment about Kidman, which was his first public comment about her in over 20 years, he may want to turn things around for them and their two kids. More from SheKnows Nicole Kidman Reveals She Discusses 'The Most Intimate Things' With Her Teenage Daughters: 'I Get To Be Their Guide' (For the British Film Institute's Sight and Sound magazine via Deadline, he spoke about Kidman in May 2025, saying, 'It was basically he and I getting to know each other,' he said. 'And when we were doing that, I suggested Nicole play the role [of Alice]. Because obviously she's a great actress.') 'Tom has always had such a huge chip on his shoulder towards Nicole, she tried many times over the years to break through so that they could have a better co-parenting relationship, but he was always totally closed off,' they alleged, adding that he now wants the family of four to reconnect. 'But he's started to soften and he's so much more mellow these days. He's shocked everyone in his world by saying he wants to get together with Nicole, most likely in London.' They added, 'Of course, he wants Connor and Bella to be there with him; they've wanted peace between their parents for a long time, so this is music to their ears.' 'Tom insists that time has been a great healer but a lot of people are convinced this is more motivated by his new romance with Ana [de Armas],' insiders said about his highly-publicized romance with future co-star Armas. 'Whatever the reason, Tom is very gung-ho about this and plans on reaching out to Nicole very soon to get the ball rolling. Odds are she will be all for it, though no doubt it will be emotional to come face to face with him after all these years.' For those who don't know, Kidman and Cruise met on the set of the hit film Days of Thunder and tied the knot a year later on Christmas Eve in 1990. They worked together on-screen again for the western film Far and Away two years later, and again in 1999 for Eyes Wide Shut. And as we said, they adopted two children together, named Isabella Jane, 32, and Connor, 30. Despite officials saying it was an amicable split, Nicole Kidman said she was blindsided when Tom Cruise filed for divorce from her in 2001. Before Kidman became the superstar she is today, she told Marie Claire, per Goalcast, that she felt like a trophy at the beginning of their marriage. 'I thought, I don't deserve to be here. We would go to the Oscars, and I would think, I'm here to support [Tom]. I felt it was my job to put on a beautiful dress and to be seen and not heard.' While Cruise has continued to be close with Isabella and Connor (especially considering their Scientology ties), many wondered what Kidman's relationship was like with them. They're still tight too! Tom Cruise's Second Act Keeps Getting Derailed by Scientology

Tom Cruise's career renaissance hit an unexpected snag at the London premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. As the 62‑year‑old Hollywood heavyweight made his grand entrance — pulling a stunt akin to his Olympics announcement last summer, scaling the nose of twin vintage planes as part of the film's spectacle — a small band of former Scientology members staged a peaceful protest just feet from the red carpet. Their leader, 29‑year‑old Alex Barnes — who is publicly listed on Scientology's websites as an enemy of the group, part of the group's 'fair game' harassment tactic — livestreamed the demonstration, which lasted roughly ten minutes before plainclothes officers swooped in, cuffing protesters under stop‑and‑search laws and searching their bags — by which time Cruise and his fellow A‑listers were already inside the Odeon Leicester Square. More from SheKnows Ana de Armas Spoke About Tom Cruise for the First Time After Romance Rumors & She's Keeping Us Guessing Barnes later decried the incident as 'a completely unnecessary and excessive use of police force which temporarily restricted our rights to peaceful protest,' per The Sun, noting that he'd been neither approached nor asked why he and his group had gathered. 'It was absolutely not our intention to cause any sort of disruption. We just wanted to be heard,' he told reporters, adding that cuffs had left bruises on his wrists. According to the Metropolitan Police, officers responded to reports of suspicious behavior before determining the demonstration was peaceful; no one was formally arrested. This latest disruption underscores the long‑standing shadow Scientology casts over Cruise's every move. Since the group was founded in the 1950s by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, it has weathered allegations of financial exploitation, emotional abuse, and aggressive tactics to stifle dissent, and that's putting it conservatively. Cruise, arguably the world's most famous Scientologist, has been its public poster child for decades, even as whispers mount that he's quietly distanced himself from the church. He hasn't publicly mentioned his membership in over a year, though insiders insist he's not fully out. For Cruise, these protests come amid a highly publicized second act in his personal life: his alleged romance with Ana de Armas. The pair have jet‑set across Europe together, from helicopter drop‑ins to low‑key Valentine's outings. Yet beneath the apparent bliss lies a thorny question of faith. De Armas, a devout Catholic, hails from a tight‑knit religious family in Cuba, and friends say she's weighed whether Scientology could derail her own future. 'Ana was raised Catholic and her family would not accept Tom because of his beliefs,' a source previously explained, though another insider insisted her heart might be open: 'His Scientologist beliefs are not a deal breaker for Ana.' Whether Cruise and de Armas can navigate this spiritual divide remains to be seen. But on premiere night in Leicester Square, it was clear that no amount of Hollywood pageantry can fully distract from the controversies that cling to one of its brightest of SheKnows 20 Of Jackie Kennedy's Most Iconic Summer Outfits All the Best Photos of Jackie Kennedy With Her Young Kids JFK Jr. & Caroline Kennedy Kristen Stewart, Keke Palmer, & More Stars Who Had Dramatic Hair Changes
