Ace filmmaker and actor Selvaraghavan on Thursday (July 24) announced that a 4K version of his acclaimed 2006 film, Pudhupettai, starring actor and his younger brother Dhanush, will be released in theatres on Saturday, July 26. The announcement, which was made on Selvaraghavan's official X handle, has come as a cause for celebration. Pudhupettai has enjoyed a cult status in Tamil cinema, with many hailing it as one of the best original gangster dramas. The film, also starring Sonia Agarwal and Sneha, followed Dhanush's Kokki Kumar, a youth sucked into a world of crime, who rises up to become one of the most powerful gangster-politicians of Chennai. Though it failed at the box office upon its initial release, it gained cult status over the years for its gritty storytelling, gripping staging of scenes, and Yuvan Shankar Raja's terrific songs and background scores. In particular, 'Oru Naalil Vaazhkai' continues to rule the playlists of fans for its comforting music and lyrics laced with existential themes. Interestingly, while Na Muthukumar is credited as the lyricist of the song, Selvaraghavan later stated that it was he who wrote the lyrics of the song. Interestingly, Selvaraghavan had announced that he is making a sequel to Pudhupettaiwith Dhanush. However, there hasn't been any updates regarding the same. Pudhupettai had cinematography by Arvind Krishna and editing by Kola Bhaskar. Lakshmi Movie Makers produced the film.
