Betaworks' third fund closes at $66M to invest in early-stage AI startups

Yahoo2 days ago
New York City-based Betaworks has closed its $66 million Fund III, which will focus on investing in early-stage AI companies.
Betaworks has been investing in AI since at least 2016 and, through its investment program Camp, has backed companies such as Huggingface and Granola. Jordan Crook, a partner at the firm (and former TechCrunch employee), said the new fund will focus on agents, native AI interfaces, and application-layer AI.
'Around these themes, we will continue to do straight seed investing and the Betaworks Camps,' Crook said.
Fund III will seek to invest in at least 25 pre-seed to seed investments, as well as make at least 50 investments into startups as part of the Betaworks Camps program. 'Thus far, we've done around 37 deals,' Crook said, adding that the average check size was around $500,000.
Crook called the current fundraising environment 'frothy' for startups, and 'spiky' for funds, but she noted that Fund III saw many of the firm's previous limited partners returning to invest.
'The fundraising environment in venture was challenging in 2024, and we weren't exempt, given that we were upsizing our fund,' she said.
Betaworks previously raised a $46 million Fund II in 2020, and a $48 million Fund I in 2016. It launched in 2008 as a venture studio, and has since become a staple in the New York City tech ecosystem, launching its Betaworks Camps program in 2016. The firm's other notable investments include Tumblr and Kickstarter.

Oppenheimer upgrades Spotify, sees 'longest runway' to add users through 2030

Spotify has the ability to add more global users than Meta Platforms, YouTube, Amazon Prime or Netflix, and to increase revenue by 16% annually through 2030, according to Oppenheimer. Analyst Jason Helfstein upgraded the music streaming platform to outperform from perform and set an $800 price target on the stock, which implies shares can gain nearly 19%. "We believe that SPOT will benefit from the secular tailwind of growing digital audio streaming adoption and that the company's subscription economics are better than most believe," Helfstein wrote in a report on Wednesday. Shares of Spotify have rallied 51% so far this year. The Luxembourg-based company earlier this year recorded its first full year of profitability when it released fourth-quarter results. First quarter results in April showed 12% year-over-year growth in subscribers to 268 million, and a 4 percentage point increase in gross profit margin to 31.6%. Looking ahead, Helfstein said Spotify can make more money from new and existing users. Compound annual growth in revenue through 2030 is expected to reach 16%, boosted by 9% annual increases in subscribers and average revenue per subscriber rising by 21%, he said. "For years SPOT has meaningfully under-monetized its free tier, using this as a conversion funnel, as the company tries to scale advertising," the analyst said. SPOT 1Y mountain Spotify stock over the past year. Helfstein cited several tailwinds for his upgrade, including expectations that: Spotify boasts the "longest runway" among large-cap internet stocks to increase its number of monthly active users (MAU), and capture a majority of listeners that are abandoning terrestrial radio (Spotify in the fourth quarter recorded 675 million MAUs, while analysts polled by StreetAccount expected 664.3 million.) A widely expected, higher-priced 'Superfan' tier will drive revenue Spotify will likely monetize its free/lowest fee over time, unlocking a multi-billion dollar revenue opportunity Spotify is already benefiting from conversion improvements from App Store changes, after a recent court ruling against Apple reduced friction for iOS "free-to-paid" conversion

NYC's Congestion Pricing Is Paying Off As Motor Traffic Drops Through July

Ribeiro for NY Daily News via Getty Images) The latest data from TomTom shows that New York City's congestion pricing is working as per design. Real-time traffic patterns from January through mid-July indicate that downtown Manhattan has experienced a notable decrease in motor vehicle congestion and a corresponding drop in travel times. The amount of time drivers spend in rush hour has decreased, and average speeds for cars have increased. Congestion decreased by nearly 4% year over year in the first four months of 2025, from 26.2% to 22.8%. Travel times for motorists fell by 90 seconds per 6 miles as average car speeds jumped from 16.3 km/h to 17.1 km/h (note: cars still have average speeds slower than many bicyclists). July congestion continued to drop from 24.4% to 22.3%, with only half the month measured. Formerly known as the Central Business District Tolling Program, and introduced on January 5, 2025, NYC's congestion toll was the first of its kind in the United States. The scheme requires drivers to pay a fee—based on the time and duration of their visit and their vehicle type—to enter the lower part of Manhattan, from the southern end of Central Park to the city's financial district. TomTom data shows year-over-year drop in motor traffic congestion through July 2025 Data from TomTom, released in March, comparing January through mid-March 2025 to the same period in 2024, showed that motor traffic congestion in the tolled area of Manhattan decreased from 24.7% to 16.9%. Average travel times per 10 kilometers improved from 33 minutes and 53 seconds to 30 minutes and 48 seconds. Evening peak hours saw some of the most dramatic changes, noted TomTom in March. 'In early 2024, congestion during the 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. rush hour averaged a staggering 43.2%,' stated a statement from the Dutch location technolgies company. 'In 2025, that number has dropped to 30.3%, shaving off nearly five minutes of the time it takes to travel 10 kilometers during peak congestion.' TomTom advertising poster, Newcastle, UK. Congestion pricing raised about $52 million in toll revenue in February alone—bringing the total for the first two months of operation to $100.6 million, according to documents posted to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. 'Congestion pricing, when implemented effectively, not only alleviates traffic but also supports economic growth,' stated TomTom. 'Beyond congestion pricing, we've learned that other tactics can also play a crucial role in alleviating urban traffic,' continued the company statement, including 'expanding public transit networks' and 'promoting cycling infrastructure.' 'Traffic congestion is more than an inconvenience—it impacts economic productivity, increases pollution, and reduces quality of life,' says TomTom. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has so far successfully resisted the Trump administration's attempts to cancel NYC's congestion pricing scheme.
