NBA's Thompson twins receive honorary degrees from Pine Crest. Plus state baseball honors

Miami Herald08-06-2025
At the behest of their father, Troy, then 9-year-old twins Amen and Ausar Thompson were already manifesting greatness on a family vision board titled 'Amen and Ausar's 6'9' Dreams'.
The first twins in NBA history to get drafted top 5, and to whom Lebron James describes as 'They different. They ain't like the rest of us. I've been able to go against some dudes in my career, and those two guys, man, they're just pure athleticism', tacked two major accomplishments onto that vision board recently.
Amen (drafted No. 4 by Houston in 2023 and Ausar, taken No. 5 by Detroit) were bestowed honorary high school degrees by Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest School at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.
'It means a lot,' said Amen, minutes before receiving the honorary degree with his brother. 'This is where I grew up -- from 8th grade to 11th grade. I had to look for new opportunities in the 12th grade, but I always felt like a Pine Crest Panther. For them ... to present me with an honorary degree means a lot.'
After winning a state title with the Panthers in 2021 and becoming Miami Herald Co-Players of the Year for classes 4A-2A as juniors, the 6-8 wings left high school for Atlanta-based Overtime Elite, a developmental professional basketball league, before entering the 2023 draft.
The ceremony at FAU followed earlier news that day that Amen was selected to the All-NBA defensive first team.
Amen's defensive tenacity, length and athleticism helped the Rockets rank fifth in defensive efficiency and finish with the fourth best record in the league (52-30).
'I have always taken pride in my defense since the Pine Crest days, even before that,' Amen said.'That was one of my goals going into this year was to make first team All-NBA on defense. So just being one of the youngest players to do that in my second year that is one of the goals I established for myself.'
Ausar appears to be on a similar defensive trajectory as Amen and helped the Pistons enjoy a historic 30-game turnaround from last season and break a streak of 15 consecutive playoff losses.

Thunder headlining NBA's opening night, Christmas schedule for this season

NEW YORK (AP) — The Oklahoma City Thunder felt slighted last season when they were left off the NBA's Christmas schedule. That won't be an issue this year. MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the NBA champion Thunder will be working at home for Christmas this season, playing host to Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs as part of the league's annual Dec. 25 quintupleheader. The other Christmas games, released by the NBA on Tuesday: Cleveland at New York, Houston at LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers, No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg and Dallas visiting Golden State, and Minnesota playing at Denver. Some NBA Cup games are scheduled to be released Wednesday and the full schedule — 80 of the 82 games for all teams — is to be released on Thursday. The remaining two games for each club will be filled in December based on how teams fare in the NBA Cup. 'They make the schedule. We play it,' Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said last season, when asked about his club not being picked for the Dec. 25 lineup. 'Our players, I know, would have liked to play on Christmas because that's such a staple day in the NBA season. But we can't control that.' Well, they sort of did control their Christmas scheduling fate this season. The NBA champions typically get invited to play on Christmas the following season; Oklahoma City beat Indiana in a seven-game NBA Finals last season. The Eastern Conference champion Pacers are among the Christmas snubs this year, after losing Tyrese Haliburton to an Achilles tear that will sideline him for the entirety of this season and seeing Myles Turner opt to sign with Milwaukee in free agency. The Knicks will be playing their 58th Christmas game, extending their NBA record. The first Christmas game in league history was at Madison Square Garden in 1947. Boston, Philadelphia and Phoenix played on Christmas last season and didn't make the Dec. 25 cut this season, replaced by Cleveland (which was the East's No. 1 seed), Houston (which landed Kevin Durant in an offseason blockbuster from the Suns) and the Thunder. Cleveland and the Thunder are playing on Christmas for the first time since 2018. The Rockets have a Christmas game for the first time since 2019. James, if he plays on the holiday, will be making his 20th Christmas appearance in his record 23 NBA season. Only 12 NBA franchises have 20 Christmas games, and James could soon have that many as a player. And it'll be a big NBA holiday in Texas: All three of the state's teams are playing on Christmas for the first time. Opening night NBC's return to the NBA broadcast world officially starts with opening night on Oct. 21, when the Thunder will receive their championship rings before playing host to Durant and the Rockets in the first game of the season. That will be followed by Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Golden State taking on James, Luka Doncic and the Lakers in the second game of the NBC doubleheader. Those are the only two games on opening night. MLK Day Peacock and NBC will have four games on Jan. 19, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The matchups: Milwaukee at Atlanta on Peacock at 1 p.m. Eastern, followed by three games on NBC: Oklahoma City at Cleveland at 2:30 p.m. Eastern, Dallas at New York at 5 p.m. Eastern and Boston at Detroit at 8 p.m. Eastern. Memphis, which typically plays on the holiday, is not this season. The Grizzlies will be returning from Europe, after facing Orlando on Jan. 15 in Berlin and Jan. 18 in London. ___ AP NBA:

First Pacers-Thunder NBA Finals rematch set for Oct. 23 on ESPN

The Pacers will open their 2025-26 season with an NBA Finals rematch on national television. ESPN announced on Tuesday the games they will broadcast as part of opening-week doubleheaders on Oct. 22 and 23. The Pacers will host the Thunder at 7:30 p.m. in an ESPN televised game on Oct. 23 after losing to the Thunder in seven games in the 2024-25 NBA Finals. The Warriors will play the Nuggets in Denver at 10 p.m. in the other ESPN televised game that night. The Knicks will host the Cavaliers on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. and the Mavericks will host the Spurs at 9:30 p.m. ESPN also officially released its Christmas Day schedule, which was reported by ESPN's Shams Charania on Friday. The Pacers are not part of that schedule. The season opens on Oct. 21 with two games on NBC and the Pacers won't be a part of that either. The Pacers will likely have more nationally televised games than usual this season but will likely have fewer than expected for a reigning Eastern Conference champion thanks to the season-ending Achilles tendon tear suffered by All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton.

The defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder will kick off the 2025-26 NBA season on opening night in a matchup against Kevin Durant's Houston Rockets on Oct. 21. That game will take place at 7:30 p.m. ET. Later that night, the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors will square off to open the season. All four of those teams will also play on Christmas Day, which features a full, five-game slate. Here's the full league schedule for Dec. 25: Cleveland Cavaliers vs. New York Knicks at 12 p.m. ET San Antonio Spurs vs. Oklahoma City Thunder at 2:30 p.m. ET Dallas Mavericks vs. Golden State Warriors at 5:00 p.m. ET Houston Rockets vs. Los Angeles Lakers at 8:00 p.m. ET Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Denver Nuggets at 10:30 p.m. ET NBA fans paying close attention to the news shouldn't be surprised by those matchups, which were leaked by ESPN's Shams Charania on Friday. In addition to those games, however, the NBA also revealed a four-game slate on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and confirmed a few more marquee early-season matchups. This story will be updated.
