ATP Washington: Daniil Medvedev vs. Reilly Opelka odds, picks, and prediction
It's been a trying year for former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev.
The Russian has dealt with a number of injuries, which have caused his form to fluctuate throughout the season. Medvedev has only reached one final in 2025, and he's lost to more than a handful of players outside the top 50, most recently to Benjamin Bonzi at Wimbledon.
Medvedev has had plenty of success during the North American hard-court swing in his career — he is a US Open champion, after all — so perhaps we see a strong close to the season from the Russian.
He is a big favorite over Reilly Opelka on Wednesday at the ATP Washington Open.
ATP Washington Open: Medvedev vs. Opelka odds, prediction
This is an intriguing battle between two very different players.
At the height of his powers, Medvedev was one of the best defensive players on the ATP Tour, and beating him essentially forced you to solve a puzzle. He is unorthodox, savvy, and could cover the court better than any player this side of Novak Djokovic.
The Russian's game has tapered off this season, but he should have an advantage against Opelka, who is a one-dimensional player who relies on a massive serve to do damage.

Opelka's defensive game still leaves plenty to be desired, but if his serve is working, he can be a chore. Medvedev found that out in a 6-7, 6-7 defeat to the American on the grass in June.
It's a different ballgame in the heat on hard courts, conditions that should mute Opelka's serve more than the grass did last month.
It's been a while since Medvedev has been firing on all cylinders, but he should get off to a decent start in Washington against a player that shouldn't provide too many surprises.
Back Meddy to get this one over the line quickly.
The Play: Medvedev -1.5 sets (-115, bet365 sportsbook)

Alex de Minaur crashes back to earth as Aussie faces losing important US Open spot
Aussie tennis star Alex de Minaur is facing the prospect of dropping out of the top eight in the rankings ahead of the US Open after a shock defeat to Reilly Opelka at the Cincinnati Open. De Minaur was heading into the tournament in stellar form having only lost to Ben Shelton on hard court since the start of his North American campaign. However, the Aussie has succumbed to his second straight defeat having lost 7-6 6-4 to big-serving American Opelka in his first match at the Cincinnati Open. Opelka hadn't beaten de Minaur in five-straight matches, but the American won 76 per cent of his first serves with the Aussie unable to convert his limited break point opportunities. Unfortunately for de Minaur, his two consecutive defeats place him in danger of dropping down from his World No.8 position. Holger Rune, Lorenzo Musetti or Andrey Rublev all have the opportunity to overtake de Minaur if they go deep into the tournament. This would come as a huge blow for de Minaur with the Aussie working his way back into the top eight, which is a favourable position for grand slams. At this stage, de Minaur wouldn't face any player seeded higher than him until the quarter-final of the US Open. Although if he drops down in the rankings after losing to Opelka, de Minaur opens himself up to facing the likes of Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and even in-from star Shelton earlier in the tournament. De Minaur has struggled against some of the world's best in recent times having never beaten Sinner in 10 attempts. The 26-year-old Aussie has also never defeated Alcaraz in his four attempts, while he has the single victory over Djokovic with a 3-1 losing record. The Aussie most recently went down to Djokovic in a four-set battle at Wimbledon to emphasise his struggles against the top few players in the world. The Aussie won't play another singles match ahead of his US Open campaign, but could take part in the new US Open mixed doubles tournament. De Minaur and fiancee Katie Boulter are hoping to earn one of the final two wildcard places to take part in the 16 team tournament. RELATED: Jannik Sinner triumph could force Aussie coach to backflip on exit call Flood of support after tennis rocked by news about Wimbledon finalist Alex de Minaur struggles against Opelka The World No.73 hadn't beaten de Minaur since 2019 having lost five-straight matches. However, the towering American blasted 14 aces and hit a whopping 38 winners in the two-set victory. Opelka felt his serve wasn't at its best, but his forehand caused too much trouble for the Aussie in the Ohio heat. "I didn't serve as well as I'd have liked to, but everything else was working," Opelka said after the match. "I was pretty consistent from the baseline the whole match. My serve fluctuated and it was a bit of a surprise that the other things came through well for me today. I think I returned really well too." While de Minaur couldn't advance, Alexei Popyrin celebrated his first tournament as a top 20 player having defeated rising Spanish teenager Martin Landaluce 7-6 6-3. De Minaur will be hoping Popyrin can do him a favour and knockout Rublev in the next round. The Russian has the opportunity to take over de Minaur with a win in Cincinnati, which would be a blow for Australia's highest-ranked player. Aussie fans will be cheering on Popyrin for a number of reasons as he takes on the Russian. Meanwhile, Adam Walton caused the biggest upset of the tournament so far having defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-7 6-4 6-1.

Hard-luck story as Aussie women wiped out in Cincinnati
It was a case of three strikes and you're out for Australia's women at the Cincinnati Open. With the US Open less than a fortnight away, players are using the hard-court event as a vital tune-up to the year's final major in New York. However, there was no joy for the Australian trio of Daria Kasatkina, Ajla Tomljanovic and Kimberly Birrell, who all lost their second-round matches in Cincinnati on Sunday (local time). Kasatkina couldn't live up to her 15th seeding, falling to talented Italian Lucia Bronzetti in three sets. Bronzetti brilliance 👏Lucia Bronzetti sees off Kasatkina for her place in the third round!#CincyTennis — wta (@WTA) August 10, 2025 The Australian fought back after a disappointing opening set to handily win the second, before Bronzetti triumphed 6-3 1-6 6-4. Veteran Tomljanovic pushed 16th seed Clara Tauson to the brink, before the Dane clinched victory 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-4. In a battle of the big servers, the tall Dane blasted down 14 aces to nine for the Australian. Tomljanovic was only able to convert one of the five break points she set up, while Tauson managed to break three times from four opportunities. Tauson's victory continues a great fortnight after she beat major winners Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys on her way to the semi-finals of last week's Canadian Open. Birrell gave a good account of herself but was unable to stop the march of fourth-seeded American Jessica Pegula, last year's finalist winning 6-4 6-3. Through in two ✌️No.4 seed Jessica Pegula makes her way to the third round with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Birrell.#CincyTennis — wta (@WTA) August 10, 2025 Australia's hopes in the women's section of the tournament now rest with talented teen Maya Joint. The young Aussie upset 18th-seeded Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in her second-round match on Saturday to set up a meeting with 12-seeded Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova. In other action on Sunday, second-seeded American Coco Gauff, the 2023 champion, overcame early problems on serve to cruise past China's Wang Xinyu 6-3 6-2. Seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, of Italy, edged into the next round with a tight 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-5) victory over Maria Sakkari, of Greece. However, eighth-seeded American Emma Navarro suffered a surprise loss, with Germany's Ella Seidel beating her 6-4 1-6 6-4. - with Agencies

Nets' Egor Demin is determined to show his shooting ability in the NBA
Brooklyn Nets guard Egor Demin came into the 2025 NBA Draft with the reputation of being a questionable shooter based off his freshman season at BYU. The main reason that Brooklyn selected Demin with the eighth overall pick in the Draft is his size and versatility, but the Russian is determined to show off his shooting ability at the NBA level in the 2025-26 season. "(It) feels good. Obviously coming here (Las Vegas), the shooting was my biggest question," Demin said during his NBA TV interview during the Las Vegas Summer League. Demin played three games in Las Vegas and averaged 11.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 40.7% from the field and 43.5% from behind the three-point line. The three-point accuracy is something Demin's proud of. "Not my question, right?," Demin continued. "The question of people about me, it's exciting time to really prove it. Prove that I can really shoot because obviously I spent a lot of time on the court practicing before getting in the draft, right? In the workouts, and really focusing on how can I be efficient from every type of shots." Demin, 19, likely dulled the noise surrounding his outside shooting for the time being, but he will still have to show that he can do it while probably being the starting point guard next season. Demin is part of the Brooklyn 2025 Draft class where all of the players have to prove that their shooting will eventually catch up to the rest of their game, at least to the point where head coach Jordi Fernandez can trust them to take those shots in the regular season. Demin got the chance to show what he looks like against the kind of NBA competition that is typical for the summer league, but the NBA when the games count is a different animal. To that point, Demin showed some confidence in taking the shots that he will probably get based on the attention that players like Michael Porter Jr. and Cam Thomas (if he re-signs) will draw on a nightly basis.
