Surprise Chinese naval drills caused dozens of Australian flight diversions

Al Arabiya25-02-2025

Dozens of commercial flights were forced to change course when Chinese warships unexpectedly announced live-fire drills off eastern Australia last week, officials have told a government hearing.
Three Chinese warships conducted a series of naval drills last Friday and Saturday, stationed underneath a busy flight path linking Australia and New Zealand.
Australia's air safety agency said it first learned of the drills when a commercial flight picked up a broadcast from the Chinese boats on Friday morning.
'At that stage we didn't know if it was a potential hoax or real,' Air Services Australia deputy chief executive Peter Curran told a government hearing on Monday evening.
The warning was broadcast on a frequency monitored by commercial pilots—but not by Australia's air traffic controllers, Curran said.
'It's an international guard frequency. Air traffic control does not monitor that frequency but pilots do. So we can't hear what was said.'
Curran said 49 commercial flights were forced to divert around the live firing zone once it became apparent the warning was legitimate.
'Some of those were aircraft that were in the air at the time we first became aware of it.'
Australia said the drills took place in international waters, and has conceded China's conduct abided by international law.
But it has criticized Beijing for running the exercises without appropriate warning.
China has defended its conduct as 'safe, standard and professional.'
Australia and close ally New Zealand have been monitoring the vessels—a frigate, a cruiser and a supply tanker—since they were spotted off Australia's shores last week.
The warships were 218 nautical miles east of Australia's island state of Tasmania on Tuesday morning, New Zealand's defense force said.
Canberra has irritated Beijing with its own navigation exercises in flashpoint regions such as the Taiwan Strait.
A Chinese fighter jet earlier this month dropped flares in the path of an Australian air force surveillance plane patrolling the contested South China Sea.
China's foreign ministry said the Australian plane was an intruder flying through the region 'without Chinese permission.'

EDward Gaming fails to qualify for Masters Toronto

The ES TIMES — In a surprising development, EDward Gaming (EDG), the 2024 VALORANT Champions champion, failed to qualify for Masters Toronto, the second international stop of the VCT 2025 season. Despite a strong performance during the group stage at VCT China Stage 1, topping their group, their qualifying campaign fell short of expectations. A defeat to XLG Esports in the upper bracket semifinals relegated them to the lower bracket, where they defeated Dragon Ranger 2-1 but were eliminated after another 2-1 loss to Bilibili Gaming. This defeat ended EDG's hopes of reaching Masters Toronto and denied them the opportunity to improve on their third-place finish at Masters Bangkok earlier this year. With EDG absent from the event, Bilibili Gaming, Wolves Esports, and XLG Esports will carry China's hopes at Masters Toronto, scheduled for June 7-22, 2025. EDG, considered one of the strongest Chinese teams in VALORANT, entered the 2025 season aiming to build on their Champions 2024 achievement. Their absence from Masters Toronto puts additional pressure on them ahead of the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, where VALORANT will make its event debut. The powerful Chinese team is currently participating in the VALORANT China Evolution Series Act 2, part of the Asian Champions League. The top two teams from this tournament will qualify for the Esports World Cup. Looking ahead, EDG's next major international opportunity will be VALORANT Champions 2025. China will be represented by four teams: the top two teams from VCT China Stage 2, and the top two teams based on ranking points. EDG still leads by 10 points, but their position could be threatened if other Chinese teams deliver strong results in Toronto.

China accuses US's Hegseth of ‘vilifying' remarks at security forum

China has protested to the United States over 'vilifying' remarks made by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the foreign ministry said on Sunday, while accusing it of deliberately ignoring calls for peace from regional nations. China has objected to Hegseth calling it a threat in the Indo-Pacific, the ministry added, describing his comments at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday as 'deplorable' and "intended to sow division.' 'Hegseth deliberately ignored the call for peace and development by countries in the region, and instead touted the Cold War mentality for bloc confrontation, vilified China with defamatory allegations, and falsely called China a 'threat',' the ministry said on its website. 'The United States has deployed offensive weaponry in the South China Sea and kept stoking flames and creating tensions in the Asia-Pacific, which are turning the region into a powder keg,' the ministry added in the statement. Hegseth had called on allies in the Indo-Pacific region, including key security ally Australia, to spend more on defense after warning of the 'real and potentially imminent' threat from China. Asked about the call to boost defense spending, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government had pledged an extra A$10 billion to defense. 'What we'll do is we'll determine our defense policy,' he told reporters on Sunday, a transcript of his remarks showed. As part of Washington's longstanding defense ties with the Philippines, the US military this year deployed Typhon launchers that can fire missiles to hit targets in both China and Russia from the island of Luzon. China and the Philippines contest sovereignty over some islands and atolls in the South China Sea, with growing maritime run-ins between their coast guards as both vie to patrol the waters. The ministry also warned the United States not to 'play with fire' on the Taiwan question. In his speech at Asia's premier forum for defense leaders, military officials and diplomats, Hegseth said any attempt by China to conquer Taiwan 'would result in devastating consequences.' China has vowed to 'reunify' with the separately governed island, by force if necessary. Taiwan's government rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims, saying only the island's people can decide their future.

Royal Institute of Traditional Arts implements Saudi-Chinese cultural exchange program

Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — The Royal Institute of Traditional Arts (Wirth), in partnership with the Academy of Arts and Design at Tsinghua University in China, implemented the Saudi-Chinese Cultural Exchange Program 2025. This program, from April 25 to 27, was part of its efforts to enhance cultural exchange and engage various segments of society in practicing handicrafts using distinctive cognitive methods, coinciding with the Year of Crafts 2025. The events included specialized workshops, most notably the traditional wood art workshop, which taught students how to decorate Najdi windows; the traditional metalworking workshop, which produced Chinese hairpins with designs inspired by traditional Saudi jewelry; and the traditional leather art workshop, which produced leather wallets. There were dialogue sessions and interactive workshops on traditional Saudi arts, most notably a dialogue session on the traditional art of roshan, and a lecture on traditional Saudi arts registered on UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage and their impact on cultural exchange, presented by Reema Al-Dosari, a lecturer at the College of Visual Arts at the Wirth Institute. Wirth is a leading entity in highlighting national identity and enriching Saudi traditional arts locally and internationally by promoting them, recognizing excellence in their fields, supporting national capabilities, and encouraging those interested in learning and developing them.
