ECI Begins Vice-Presidential Election Preparations Two Days After Jagdeep Dhankhar's Unexpected Resignation
This comes a day after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar tendered his resignation on Tuesday, citing health-related reasons.
The election to the office of the Vice President of India is governed by The Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, and the rules made under it -- The Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974.
"Accordingly, the Election Commission of India has already started the preparations relating to the Vice-Presidential Elections, 2025. On completion of the preparatory activities, the announcement of the Election Schedule to the office of the Vice-President of India will follow as soon as possible," the polls body said.
The ECI also mentioned that major pre-announcement activities, which are already been started, include preparation of Electoral College, which consists of elected as well as nominated members of Rajya Sabha as well as Lok Sabha; Finalisation of Returning Officer/ Assistant Returning Officer(s); and Preparation and dissemination of Background Material on all the previous Vice-Presidential elections.
Until that election is concluded, the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha steps in to discharge the Vice President's parliamentary duties, including presiding over proceedings in the Upper House.
However, this temporary arrangement does not confer the title of Acting Vice President or confer broader constitutional authority beyond the Rajya Sabha chairmanship.
According to experts, under the Constitution, the Election Commission must fill the vacancy "as soon as possible", typically within six months. The new Vice President, once elected, will serve a full five-year term rather than simply completing the remainder of Dhankhar's tenure.
Top Contenders Vice President Post
Apart from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, one of the key contenders being considered for the vice president's post is Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman and Janata Dal (United) MP Harivansh Singh. He has been in the post since 2020 and is seen as a trusted figure with the current administration.
Other potential candidates reportedly include Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. According to media reports, the BJP is also exploring the option of choosing a current state governor—as was adopted by Jagdeep Dhankhar, who was the governor of West Bengal before assuming the vice president's post—or possibly a senior Union minister with significant experience in parliamentary affairs.

Priyanka Chaturvedi's face reaction in RS goes viral as Jaya Bachchan tells Sena-UBT MP ‘don't control me'
Amid the ongoing debate on 'Operation Sindoor' in the Parliament, Samajwadi Party MP and actor Jaya Bachchan sparked a row in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday as she said Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi not to try to control her. The video has gone viral as Priyanka couldn't control her laugh. The incident took place at a time when Jaya Bachchan was speaking in Rajya Sabha and was visibly irked with BJP MPs in the house started interrupting her speech. To this, Bachchan said, "Either you speak or I will speak. I will not allow this. When you speak, I never interrupt. When a woman speaks, I never interrupt. So please, mind your tongue." BJP MP Surendra Singh Nagar, who was presiding over the House, said, 'Jaya ji, you address the Chair. Whatever you say will go on record.' Watching Jaya Bachchan angry, Priyanka Chaturvedi, who was sitting beside Bachchan, attempted to calm her down. But it backfired as Jaya said, "Priyanka, don't control me." Following this, Priyanka Chaturvedi responded with an embarrassed laugh. Not only this, even SP MP Jaya Bachchan also gave a smile after this, but soon went back to her momentum, lashing out the BJP government over Operation Sindoor. Speaking at the Upper House, the Samajwadi Party MP questioned the name of Operation Sindoor and said the 'sindoor" of several women was 'wiped off" during the Pahalgam terror attack. Jaya started her speech by paying her condolences to the families of the people who were killed in the Pahalgam attack on April 22. 'It looks like fiction to me… the way they (terrorists) came and killed so many people, and no action was taken. It was unreal," she added. But then hit out at BJP. She said, "I must congratulate you (the ruling party) on appointing such writers who give such grand names. Why did you name it 'Sindoor'? The sindoor has been wiped off the foreheads of women whose husbands were killed." She also lambasted the government for an intelligence failure and for not keeping people safe. 'You have destroyed the faith and trust of the people you made promises to," she said in the Rajya Sabha.

3 Terrorists Killed In Op Mahadev Were Shot In Their Heads: Amit Shah
New Delhi: Families of Pahalgam attack victims and many other people wanted the three terrorists to be shot in their heads and they met the same fate in Operation Mahadev, Home Minister Amit Shah said in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Replying to the debate on Operation Sindoor in the House, Shah said during investigations the identity of the three terrorists killed in Operation Mahadev clearly established Lashkar-e-Taiba's hand in Pahalgam attack as all three belonged to this terror outfit. He stated that such barbaric crime never happened where religion was asked before killing people in front of women and children. Earlier, when Shah began to speak, Opposition parties protested and demanded that the Prime Minister speak, but when the Chair refused to entertain their demand, they staged a walkout. Continuing his speech, Shah said Congress leader P Chidambaram had demanded his resignation and proof that the terrorists were from Pakistan. Shah stated that Chidambaram even challenged the justification of Operation Sindoor. "Priority of Congress is not national security, but politics; it indulges in politics of vote bank, appeasement," the Home Minister said. He said that Chidambaram exposed the mentality of Congress to the whole world that for vote bank they would support Pakistan, Lashkar-e-Taiba and terrorists. He taunted Congress leader Prithviraj Chauhan who questioned the naming of the terrorist encounter as Operation Mahadev and said that when Shivaji Maharaj fought against the Mughals, his war slogan was "Har Har Mahadev". While citing instances, he said that various war slogans of many Indian armymen are based on religions and it has nothing to do with Hindu and Muslim. He cleared the doubts about the timing of their killings and said that the CRPF, Army and J&K police, while staying in difficult terrain and having food sent from drones followed and killed them.

‘Sindoor toh ujad gaya': Jaya Bachchan fumes in Rajya Sabha, asks 'why did you name it Operation Sindoor'
Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan questioned the government on Wednesday on why the retaliatory action by the armed forces following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack was named "Operation Sindoor", when women were widowed and "lost their Sindoor". "I talk from my heart... You have appointed big writers, who give fancy names... Why did you name it Sindoor? Sindoor to ujad gaya logo ka (they lost their Sindoor)... Those who were killed, their wives were left behind," PTI quoted Jaya Bachchan as saying. "The tourists who went there, why did they go there? After abolition of Article 370, they were chest-thumping that terrorism will be finished... what happened? The tourists went there believing that," she added. Bachchan expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack and said, 'You have destroyed the faith and trust of people you promised. Those families will never forgive you. You do not have the ability to apologise to those families.' During a debate in the Rajya Sabha on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, the actor-turned-politician was also seen objecting to interruptions from other MPs. Bachchan replied that she has 'sharp ears'. She even told Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, who was sitting next to her, "Don't control me." She also cited Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien's statement and said, 'Derek said a good thing, the weaker the argument, the more aggressive the body language.' 'Be humble, be kind, be protective towards people who have given you this position and authority with hope that you will protect them... Protect them,' she said. The Indian Armed Forces launched military strikes in nine locations of Pakistan and PoK in a joint military action called Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in the region as a retaliation for the deadly Pahalgam terror attacks that claimed 26 lives.
