Crypto Traders Eye $130K Bitcoin as Majors Price-Action Shows Market Structure Shift

Yahoo12-07-2025
Bitcoin's rally to $120,000 this week has sparked a broader breakout across major crypto assets, with ether (ETH), Solana's SOL, XRP, and dogecoin (DOGE) all posting high single-digit percentage gains.
However, this time, price action isn't just about momentum, as traders claim that market structure is evolving under the weight of institutional influence.
'This isn't a frenzied boom with no foundation,' said Seamus Rocca, CEO of Xapo Bank. 'It's a measured ascent, backed up by large institutional players with the long-term in mind.'
Rocca pointed to tight monetary policy and geopolitical volatility as reinforcing Bitcoin's emerging role as a macro hedge, adding that 'the momentum we've seen over the last 48 hours is clear. Bitcoin isn't just growing in value, but also as a genuine asset class that is rivalling traditional finance.'
Ethereum, up over 17% on the week and briefly crossed $3,000, remains a primary beneficiary. "In Q2, corporate treasury purchases of BTC outpaced inflows into spot ETFs," said the analytics team at Bitcoin yield protocol TeraHash in a note to CoinDesk.
"That points to strategic positioning. At the same time, custodians like Anchorage and Fidelity are scaling institutional pipelines, while OTC desks are tightening spreads."
Solana, now trading around $163, gained over 11% on the week amid renewed demand across retail and memecoin ecosystems. The chain continues to act as a high-beta proxy for risk-on sentiment. XRP, meanwhile, jumped 25%, benefiting from both a technical breakout and rising speculation around regulatory resolution.
'Price action may grab the spotlight,' TeraHash added, 'but the real breakthrough this summer is structural.'
The altcoin move is broad-based. Dogecoin has rallied 23% over the past week, driven by increased retail participation through platforms like Robinhood and Binance. XRP volumes have spiked on Korean exchanges, while Cardano, TRX, and AVAX are all trading firmly in the green.
Meanwhile, Bitpanda Deputy CEO Lukas Enzersdorfer-Konrad said that 'strong bitcoin rallies are often followed by significant movements in altcoins with a slight delay — and a potential comeback of meme coins can't be ruled out either.'
But not everyone sees a straight line up.
'Despite briefly touching this key milestone, BTC remains below a major resistance zone,' said Ruslan Lienkha, Chief of Markets at YouHodler, said in an email.
'A decisive breakout and sustained move above this level could trigger a sharp upward rally, potentially targeting the $130,000 range,' Lienkha added.

Solana Memecoin Trader Missed Out On $45M After Selling Too Early But Says, 'I'll Be Real, It Doesn't Hurt'

Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. A Solana memecoin trader sold his TROLL holdings too early and missed out on a $45 million windfall. "I do not think there is anyone else in [crypto Twitter] with a bigger fumble than me," Solana memecoin creator Leland King Fawcette said Sunday on X, sharing transaction data, showing that he once controlled 22% of the total TROLL supply. TROLL is a Solana memecoin built around the Trollface meme. It originally launched over a year ago but has gained traction in recent weeks. Don't Miss: The same firms that backed Uber, Venmo and eBay are investing in this pre-IPO company disrupting a $1.8T market — 'Scrolling To UBI' — Deloitte's #1 fastest-growing software company allows users to earn money on their phones. Fawcette told Decrypt on Tuesday that he had taken a large position in TROLL on Aug. 11, 2024, believing that he could get other influential cryptocurrency accounts to also buy in and pump the coin. But that didn't happen. Only one so-called cryptocurrency key opinion leader got in, he said. Feeling like his ploy had fallen through, Fawcette sold his holdings hours later, dumping on the copy traders of the KOL for a 9 SOL profit. At the time, the token had a market cap of only about $9,400. At first, it appeared that Fawcette had made the right choice. For months, the token barely moved, until this April. In April, the project received a new lease on life after the token's original creators abandoned it and the community took over the social media and marketing. Trending: If there was a new fund backed by Jeff Bezos offering a ? By the end of April, the token's market cap had surged from nearly nothing to a high of $41 million. This rally cooled in May and June before picking up again in late July. On Wednesday, the token peaked at over $207 million, meaning that if Fawcette had been able to hold on, his position would have been worth over $45 million. While such a loss in hindsight might give the average person sleepless nights, Fawcette has maintained in recent months that he is unbothered, a sentiment he repeated while speaking with Decrypt. "I'll be real, it doesn't hurt that I [sold] TROLL because I [sold] it back in August, and the coin started running in April," he said. "So the feeling of destruction, the feeling of hatred, the feeling of why did I [sell], that doesn't really exist for me. Because it was a single meme coin on a platform with millions of meme coins. Secondly, there was no indication that the coin was going to run."Nevertheless, Fawcette now appears to be chasing the shadow of TROLL's success by shilling LOL, a Solana memecoin inspired by the LOL screaming meme face, which shares similar artistic characteristics with the Trollface meme. Whether LOL can be the next TROLL remains to be seen. At last look, the token boasted a market capitalization of only $32,000 and even this is largely due to Fawcette's involvement. He said Wednesday on X that he owned 33.5% of the supply, promising to burn 30% of that stash if his post got 300 likes. At last look, it had only five. Hedge Funds Flip on Green Energy and Start Betting Against Oil

Portfolio managers have been reversing strategies that have dominated over the past four years. Hedge funds are betting against oil stocks and winding back shorts on solar in a reversal of positions that dominated their energy strategies over the past four years. Since the beginning of October and through the second quarter, equity-focused hedge funds have — on average — been mostly short oil stocks, according to a Bloomberg Green analysis of positions on companies in global indexes for sectors spanning oil, wind, solar and electric vehicles. That's a reversal of bets that had dominated since 2021, according to the data, which are based on fund disclosures to Hazeltree, an alternative-investment data specialist.
