IKEA marks milestones with ‘Supporting First Steps' campaign

Al-Futtaim IKEA has launched a new campaign, Supporting First Steps, aimed at capturing the everyday moments that shape early childhood development. The campaign is part of IKEA's ongoing regional brand narrative, following previous initiatives such as Proudly Second Best and Guilty Pets, which celebrate real-life family moments.
Rooted in the insight that many toddlers take their first steps by using nearby furniture for balance—a trend known as 'baby cruising' and popular on TikTok—Supporting First Steps turns attention to how IKEA products quietly support these important but often overlooked experiences. The campaign serves as a reminder of the role home environments play in nurturing development.
The visuals, shot by photographer Ale Burset, feature IKEA products that are commonly present in these milestone moments: the BEKVÄM step stool, LACK side table, KALLAX shelving unit and MAMMUT children's stool. Each item is positioned not as the centrepiece, but as a steady backdrop in key developmental moments.
Recognising that more than three-quarters of parents share milestone moments of their children online, the campaign film incorporates user-generated content, blending authentic family footage with campaign visuals to create a narrative grounded in lived experience.
Carla Klumpenaar, GM of Marketing, Communication & Interior Design at IKEA Al-Futtaim, said the campaign was designed to highlight how IKEA is present in everyday life, not just for major milestones but for the moments in between that truly matter.
Daniel Fisher, Global Chief Creative Officer at INGO The Agency, added that the creative idea was inspired by a universal parenting truth: many first steps happen alongside a piece of furniture. Reflecting on his own experience, he noted how his daughters took their first steps with the help of a LACK table in their living room—an IKEA product that continues to serve as a backdrop to countless family stories.
The campaign was developed in collaboration with INGO Hamburg and Ale Burset and will be rolled out across out-of-home, print, digital, and social media platforms in the Middle East.

Local media reports said that while on a Kayak trip, the boat capsized, and Taimour saw his boy losing control, and high waves seemed to carry him down. He quickly realised his son was drowning. In a spontaneous act that reflected sacrifice and the strong father-son bond, Taimour rushed to save his son from drowning and succeeded, but lost his own life. He was 44 years old. The tragedy sent shockwaves through Egypt's artistic community, prompting an outpouring of condolences. "Taimour wrote an unforgettable human story about the bond between a father and his son — a father who lost his life so that his child could live. This is life, and such are the feelings of parents toward their children,' commented popular actor and writer Amr Mahmoud Yassin. Many fans also mourned the young cinematographer, with the famous Egyptian newspaper Youm 7 calling him a "symbol of sacrifice". To showcase its kitchen range, IKEA has partnered with Memac Ogilvy and Bigfoot Films to launch its latest campaign: An Everything Kitchen. Rolling out in the UAE, Oman and Qatar, the campaign aims to raise awareness of IKEA's kitchen solutions through gently encouraging consumers towards a kitchen revamp by recognising the significance of the room in every household. 'Our 'An Everything Kitchen' campaign celebrates the profound role the kitchen plays in our lives,' said Carla Klumpenaar, GM Marketing and Communications, IKEA UAE, Qatar, Egypt and Oman. Therefore, the creative brief mandated a campaign that tugged on the emotional heartstrings of consumers in the region, tapping into the insight that in every home, the kitchen holds more life than we give it credit for. 'Kitchen revamps are a key pillar of IKEA's business. However, redoing your entire kitchen is a decision never taken lightly,' said Moemen Metwally, Creative Director, Memac Ogilvy. 'The kitchen is a space that witnesses life's everyday moments, and reminds people of its emotional role in the home aimed to make the decision to renovate feel more meaningful,' Metwally said. This includes the usual cooking and cleaning, but also equally usual: experimenting, debating, and sneaking around for midnight snacks. 'From the start, the tone was all about warmth – emotional, visual, and everything in between. A cozy voice-over pulled viewers in, while a DOP with a knack for heartfelt storytelling added layers of visual depth,' said Rania Salamé, Producer, Bigfoot Films. 'We made sure this one felt like home – literally,' she added. 'The kitchen was brought to life as a warm, everyday space that felt straight out of an IKEA catalog and someone's real life.' Salamé also attributed the campaign's final look to it's casting. 'Casting actors with genuine chemistry was key, so the story had that natural, 'yep, I've been there' kind of vibe. It was all about blending brand and heart without missing a beat,' she said. 'It's where life truly happens, in all its raw, beautiful glory. We hope this reminds people that an IKEA kitchen is designed to be a foundation for all those real, everyday moments that make a house a home,' Klumpenaar said. The campaign film is fast and energetic, with a touch of ASMR. 'It's designed to sit seamlessly within the social landscape, where most people look for ideas and make decisions,' Metwally explained. 'The pace, visuals, and sound all work together to feel native to platforms like Instagram and TikTok, making the content feel less like an ad and more like a moodboard.'
