Paula Martin Sampedro fires Sunday 68 to win low amateur honors at Women's British Open
The Spaniard, who played alongside two-time Smyth Salver winner Lydia Ko, closed with a 4-under 68 to zoom up the board and currently holds a share of eighth at 4 under. Her 30 on the inward nine is the lowest of the week by two strokes.
"Honestly, even in the front nine the couple the bogeys she made, she got some really nasty lip-outs," said Ko.
"At that point if a couple of those dropped it would've been an unbelievable round. Was still an unbelievable round, and it was fun to play alongside her today."
Martin Sampedro wraps up the coveted Smyth Salver for low amateur honors as Carla Bernat struggled with a 78 on Sunday to finish at 9 over for the championship, while Jeneath Wong shot 82 to finish at 17 over.
Martin Sampedro becomes the fourth Spanish player to win the award, joining Marta Figueras-Dotti (1982), Elisa Serramia (2003) and Luna Sobron (2015). Her coach and caddie for the week, Alejandro Larrazabal, won the British Amateur at Royal Porthcawl in 2002.
"My first three, four holes were really rough," said Martin Sampedro. "There was no way I was getting two on 1, it's a par 4. Then the first four holes, with perfect conditions are already so hard, so I knew it was going to be a tough beginning.
"And then just managed to keep calm and just hole a couple putts, and then I started to see the lines better ... it was definitely a good birdie stretch on the back nine."
The list of recent Smyth Salver winners is packed with stars.
The award, given to the low amateur at the AIG Women's British Open, has served as a strong indicator of future success, with names like Danielle Kang, Georgia Hall, Leona Maguire, Jeeno Thitikul, Ko, and most recently, Lottie Woad, receiving the honor.
It's been a massive summer for Martin Sampedro, who won both the British Women's Amateur and European Ladies' Amateur Championship in Germany. The British Amateur victory exempts her into next year's championship. Martin Sampedro currently ranks third in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

Vinicius Jr warned against 'poisonous fight' with Real Madrid as contract demand could 'backfire' after disappointing season alongside Kylian Mbappe
Bilbao's sporting director warns Vinicius Claims Real Madrid rewards the deserving Laments winger's form in previous campaign Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱 WHAT HAPPENED? Contract talks between Real Madrid and Vinicius have stalled after the Brazilian asked to be the highest-paid player in the squad, which irked the Madrid camp. Bilbao's sporting director and ex-Madrid player Alkorta says the 25-year-old should not test Madrid president Florentino Perez as it may 'backfire', and instead showcase his worthiness to earn rewards. THE BIGGER PICTURE Vinicius had a significant drop in his form in the 2024-25 campaign, scoring a total of 22 goals and registering 19 assists in 58 games, compared to his 2023-24 season, in which he scored 24 and provided 11 assists in 39 games. Yet, when the contract renewal discussions were held, the winger asked for a salary higher than that of Kylian Mbappe. Alkorta claims the player didn't perform well last season and should not demand a pay rise, while also asserting that the battle for money can turn into a 'poisonous fight', citing the example of Sergio Ramos as one for the Brazilian to learn from. WHAT ALKORTA SAID Talking to Cadena SER about Vinicius's drop in form after Mbappe's signing, Alkorta said: "He's one of the best in the world, without a doubt. Trying to put pressure on Florentino Perez could backfire. Let's remember what happened with [Sergio] Ramos. Since they moved him to the left wing, I haven't seen him doing well. Playing with Mbappe has been difficult for him. They're young and ambitious, but the environment needs to advise them better. Now is not the time to demand things as if they had had a great season. Last year, changing the system to play him and Mbappe didn't work out entirely. If he focuses on performing at his best, the rest will follow. Real Madrid always reward those who prove their worth on the pitch." Further explaining how a fight over salary can turn ugly, Alkorta said: "These fights are poisonous. Florentino is affectionate, but he doesn't hesitate to make tough decisions. He needs to be cool. If he has a good season, he'll have the strength to negotiate." WHAT NEXT FOR VINICIUS? Vinicius has attracted significant interest from Saudi Arabia. Reportedly, Al-Ahli have set aside a transfer budget of €300 million (£261m/$351m) for the winger. However, the club are aware that the Brazilian might not switch clubs as of now and are waiting for the right time to make a move. For now, Vinicius has publicly stated he wants to continue with Madrid. The Spanish side are set to face Osasuna in their opening La Liga fixture on August 19.

Coach Javier Mendez: Islam Makhachev vs. Ilia Topuria 'the No. 1 fight to make' in UFC
The building blocks for a potential super fight between Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria are being put in place. There's no doubt a clash between the two current pound-for-pound bests would be big for the sport, but how big exactly? Makhachev's long-time coach, Javier Mendez, thinks a championship bout between Makhachev and Topuria is the biggest fight the UFC could make today. This wasn't the case a few months ago, as Mendez told MMA Junkie last year that Topuria had ways to go to be at the level of his student. However, since those comments, Topuria defended the UFC featherweight title, by becoming the first to knockout Max Holloway, and then moved up to lightweight to knock out Charles Oliveira and claim the belt, which was vacated by Makhachev himself. "I think every fan wants to watch this fight," Mendez told Hablemos MMA in Spanish. "It's the No. 1 fight, No. 1. The other one was Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall – that was No. 1. But right now, if Islam wins, the No. 1 fight to make is Topuria vs. Islam." Makhachev vacated his UFC lightweight title earlier this year, and is expected to challenge UFC welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena in the coming months. No official date or location has been announced by the UFC. Should Makhachev become a two-division UFC champion, just like Topuria did in June, Mendez would love to see a clash between the two – whether it's at 155 or 170 pounds. "La Leyenda" has been very vocal about wanting to fight Makhachev and has chased him for some time now. He's also made some bold claims, saying he could submit Makhachev, who's one of the most dominant grappler's MMA has ever seen. Some would be bothered by Topuria's comments, but Mendez very much likes what's going on. "I like what he's been doing," Mendez said. "He's doing a good job at getting people to want to watch the fight. The more Ilia does, the more people want to see this fight. I like everything he's doing as a fighter. He's very strong and doesn't care about the weight. I think now it's a great fight for us. The first thing Islam wanted was a legacy fight – he wanted the welterweight title. Now if we win the welterweight title, we can go down or he can come up. That's what I say, but if the UFC doesn't like it, it's not happening. But first we need to win."
