Social media reacts to Notre Dame S Xavier Watts drafted by the Atlanta Falcons
It wasn't what many expected, but Notre Dame safety Xavier Watts was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons with the No. 96 overall pick of the NFL drafts third round.
The former wide receiver made the transition look smooth, as a junior he won the Bronko Nagurski Award, and was named a unanimous All-American. Watts senior year wasn't quite as successful as the year before, but he was still a consensus All-American. He finishes his Fighting Irish career playing in 55 games, with 188 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 13 interceptions with one returned for a score and 18 passes defended.
Social media reacted to the selection of Watts by the Falcons, and as you'll see his coach Marcus Freeman's thoughts is exactly the same sentiment from me.
Xavier Watts becomes an Atlanta Falcon
What a moment for Watts, to hear his named getting called in the NFL draft. We know that it wasn't where he wanted to be selected, but he'll use it as motivation and get to work with the Falcons.
What led up to Xavier Watts getting drafted
Anytime a trade is made to move up and a team picks you, it's a sign that they didn't want to miss out. That's exactly what happened with Watts, as the Falcons traded a pick later in the third and a fifth next year to move up and take the Irish star safety.
Head coach Marcus Freeman
It was a late night for coach Freeman, but well worth staying up to see Watts getting drafted. As he said in his post-spring press conference, players go through plenty of delayed gratification. That was exactly the case tonight.
ESPN's Field Yates
We saw plenty of that over the last two years, and Yates really likes the move the Falcons made with drafting Watts. It was very surprising to see him last this late into the draft, but Atlanta will be very happy with the former Notre Dame star.
Atlanta GM Terry Fontenot on why Watts
The Falcons believed that there was going to be a run on safeties and Watts was high on their draft board. Fontenot was very complimentary about his newest Falcon, calling him a 'stud.' They decided to be aggressive and went to get Watts.
We love Watts too
You got to love when the local media is excited about a pick, in this case being Watts. We love him as well, as we saw him dominate the secondary over the last two seasons.
Xavier Watts reaction to getting selected
It probably wasn't something that Watts could see when transitioning from a wide receiver to a safety, but it all worked out in the end. You can see his relief that the process is over and he knows where his next football home is. Congrats Xavier!

Donegan advances to US Amateur semifinals to the delight of his large, vocal gallery

SAN FRANCISCO -- Niall Shiels Donegan, the Scot who grew up in nearby Mill Valley, advanced to the U.S. Amateur semifinals Friday at The Olympic Club to the delight of his large, vocal gallery. Donegan — set for his first season at North Carolina after two years at Northwestern — outlasted Notre Dame junior Jacob Modleski with a par on the 19th hole in windy conditions. 'I feel like with this crowd, I know so many of them, it just feels very natural. ... I can't thank them enough for being here,' Donegan said. 'I'm just trying to enjoy the moment. ... It's amazing they're giving me so much support.' Donegan pulled even with a 6-foot birdie putt on the par-5 17th. 'You've just got to stay so patient,' Donegan said. 'You can't get ahead of yourself… one hole is its own event, and it's just all about staying in the present, not thinking ahead.' Donegan will face rising Tennessee sophomore Jackson Herrington, a 4-and-2 winner over Jimmy Abdo of Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota. 'I didn't play too well today,' Herrington said. 'I was pretty mad at myself for that. I felt like I kept him in it a little too long, but I got the job done.' Herrington and Donegan were among the 17 players who advanced from a 20-man playoff Wednesday morning to determine the final 64 for match play. Donegan's father, Lawrence, was a longtime golf correspondent for The Guardian. In the other semifinal, Georgia teen Mason Howell will face Oklahoma State junior Eric Lee. They each won their matches 1 up, with the 18-year-old Howell beating John Daly II, and Lee edging 16-year-old Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach, Florida. 'I like the fact that it's just me and one other guy,' Lee said. 'I don't really need to worry about what I shot. Just need to worry about beating the other guy.' Howell qualified for the U.S. Open this year with rounds of 63-63 from the Atlanta sectional. Daly, a senior-to-be at Arkansas, is the son of two-time major champion John Daly. ___

Titans-Falcons NFL preseason Week 2: Studs and Duds

The Tennessee Titans wrapped up their 10-day road trip with a preseason Week 2 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. This road trip was about more than football; it was about building relationships and learning to trust your teammates. The loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was brutal; no touchdowns were scored after rookie quarterback Cam Ward left the field. But in Week 2, the Titans started to trust each other, and it showed on the field. It wasn't an easy win, with loads of effort from both teams despite Michael Penix Jr. not playing for the Falcons, but the Titans overcame adversity to get a win under their belts. This is momentum they can ride into next week's matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. For tonight, though, several players showed out and others who did not. Let's take a look at this week's studs and duds from the Titans' win over the Falcons. Stud: RB Jermar Jefferson Jermar Jefferson may not have had the most touches or the most yards among the running backs, but he did score a touchdown on four rushes for 18 yards. It's not just that he scored a touchdown; it's when he scored it, and that affected the Titans' momentum in a positive direction. Dud: WR Van Jefferson Van Jefferson was targeted twice, according to stats currently available, but he didn't catch anything thrown his way. He hasn't performed up to anyone's expectations, and while he wasn't out there for long tonight, he certainly didn't make use of the time he was given. Stud: RB Kalel Mullings Kalel Mullings set the tone for all running backs against the Atlanta Falcons. He and Julius Chestnut shared time in the first half, with Mullings recording eight carries for 25 yards. He also tackled Natrone Brooks after he intercepted a pass by Brandon Allen. Mullings is making a huge push for a spot on this roster, and it was visible in his play against the Falcons. Dud: K Joey Slye Slye missed an extra point. He did make one field goal from 23 yards, but the missed extra point is a bad look in preseason action. Stud: TE Gunnar Helm Rookie tight end Gunnar Helm earned Player of the Game honors for a reason. He recorded four receptions on four targets for 48 yards and a touchdown. Plus, he was a solid blocking tight end against the Falcons, helping protect Cam Ward and assist with running lanes for Kalel Mullings. He is the solid backup to Chig Okonkwo and may very well overtake him before the season ends. Dud: QB Trevor Siemian Trevor Siemian was brought in to be an improvement on the released Tim Boyle. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Siemian completed just four of seven pass attempts for 34 yards. Jermar Jefferson may have scored his touchdown while Siemian was under center, but it had nothing to do with the third-string quarterback who played subpar in Atlanta. More Studs More Duds

More on Gunnar Helm

Follow live updates from tonight's doubleheader of preseason games Getty Images That score late in the first half was not the first touchdown catch that Gunnar Helm has made in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The rookie Titans tight end scored what wound up being the game-winning touchdown in overtime of Texas' instant-classic Peach Bowl win over Arizona State on New Year's Day. The victory sent the Longhorns to the Cotton Bowl, where they lost to eventual national champion Ohio State. Imagn Images Halftime - Titans 13, Falcons 3 That will do it for the first half in Atlanta with the Falcons trailing by 10 points. Neither offense impressed until Brandon Allen's touchdown pass late in the first half. Cam Ward was just 2-for-7 passing for 42 yards in the first half. Easton Stick was not impressive either, completing 12-of-19 passes for just 78 yards and an interception. That's a defensive drive that Falcons coach Raheem Morris is going to be very upset at. Atlanta had only given up just six points and effectively stymied the Titans' offense for most of the first half. Credit Brandon Allen for managing the Titans' two-minute offense. But a 7-yard pass on third-and-2 gave the Titans a first down and life. Then, an 11-yard pass to James Proche. The Falcons' defense just can't give these Titans receivers that much space. It culminates in a brilliant 25-yard pass and catch from Allen to Gunnar Helm, who jumped up in between Falcons defenders in the end zone to secure the touchdown. Now, it's a 10-point game with Atlanta going to be chasing on offense. Q2 0:38 - Titans 13, Falcons 3 What a throw and catch for Tennessee! Brandon Allen fires a strike to tight end Gunnar Helm down the seam for a 25-yard score. The tight end was double covered but Allen placed the pass toward his back shoulder and Helm went up to get it over both Falcons defenders. The extra point by Slye is good. If there's a positive for the Titans offense tonight, it's wide receiver Elic Ayomanor. The 22-year-old Canadian from Medicine Hat, Alberta, has two catches for 47 yards. His longest catch of the night was 35 yards off a pass from Cam Ward in the first quarter. The Titans will hope to get more positive yardage from their receivers in the second half. Q2 1:21 - Titans 6, Falcons 3 On third-and-2, Allen checks it down to Julius Chestnut for a gain of 7 yards to move the sticks. Q2 2:30 - Titans 6, Falcons 3 Another terrible drive by the Falcons still ends in points because of the excellent field position after the interception. Younghoe Koo boots through a 42-yard field goal to cut Atlanta's deficit in half. Natrone Brooks of the Falcons went undrafted in 2023. He's trying to earn his spot on Atlanta after appearing in nine games in 2024. The 25-year-old cornerback tallied one tackle and one QB hit last season. Tonight, Brooks gets Atlanta's first takeaway, running back 33 yards. A nice job sneaking underneath the route of the Titans receiver to secure the interception. At least there's no quarterback controversy in Tennessee, either... Q2 5:32 - Titans 6, Falcons 0 Brandon Allen steps up in the pocket and unleashes a throw directly to Falcons corner Natrone Brooks. The Titans finally got a first down but immediately gave the ball away. Easton Stick and company will look to capitalize on the field position. Getty Images What's the biggest difference for Michael Penix Jr. now heading into his second NFL season compared to the awkward situation he found himself in when he was a rookie? He didn't hesitate when asked that by the Falcons' broadcast. 💬 'Honestly, a lot of confidence. Especially having an offseason with the guys, being able to have those reps that I wasn't able to have last year, it brings a lot of confidence. I'm ready to go.' Obviously, most of the quarterback focus in this game is on Cam Ward. But Easton Stick's struggles are worth monitoring, too. As the Falcons broadcast pointed out, Stick could essentially be battling to be the Falcons' backup quarterback soon — if and when an injury elsewhere opens up a potential trade avenue for Kirk Cousins. It's no secret that the battle for the fifth and sixth receivers for the Atlanta Falcons will be contested. At least four to five receivers are fighting for two spots. On this latest drive, Chris Blair had an Easton Stick pass placed perfectly within his grasp. But Blair couldn't corral the ball, resulting in an incomplete pass. The 27-year-old did make a 12-yard reception later in the drive on third-and-17. But that dropped ball is costly when you're one of the receivers fighting for playing time in the regular season. Imagn Images Q2 10:40 - Titans 6, Falcons 0 Punts are fun, right? Another ugly drive for the Falcons ends as Chris Blair is brought down 5 yards short of the sticks on third down. Cam Ward is done for the night. Brandon Allen is now in at quarterback for the Titans. To Lukas' earlier point, there's another absolutely brutal penalty for the Falcons as an explosive run by Nathan Carter past midfield is negated due to a hold. It's approaching halfway through the second quarter, and the Tennessee Titans only have one first down. Yes, this isn't a drill. One first down. Cam Ward only has two completions tonight. He's showcasing his throwing speed, but the receivers are struggling to make the catches. Only two catches tonight so far for the Titans. Not good enough! Q2 12:47 - Titans 6, Falcons 0 Cam Ward and company quickly go three-and-out. The rookie attempts to find Elic Ayomanor down the seam, but he is covered tightly by Dee Alford. The Titans' wideout wanted a flag but does not get one. Tennessee punts again. These offenses have been rather unimpressive so far. Entering the second quarter, the Atlanta Falcons only had one penalty. But the flags started flying on Atlanta's first drive on offense this quarter. Two false starts back up the Falcons, unable to get a first down on the drive. Oh, and the Titans commit a holding penalty on the ensuing punt. The coaches on both teams are going to have a lot of film to comb through before Week 1 to reduce the mistakes. Q2 13:42 - Titans 6, Falcons 0 Two false starts completely derail the Falcons' drive as Stick fails to connect with Chris Blair on third-and-long. Atlanta punts again.
