More on Gunnar Helm
That score late in the first half was not the first touchdown catch that Gunnar Helm has made in Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The rookie Titans tight end scored what wound up being the game-winning touchdown in overtime of Texas' instant-classic Peach Bowl win over Arizona State on New Year's Day. The victory sent the Longhorns to the Cotton Bowl, where they lost to eventual national champion Ohio State. Imagn Images
Halftime - Titans 13, Falcons 3
That will do it for the first half in Atlanta with the Falcons trailing by 10 points.
Neither offense impressed until Brandon Allen's touchdown pass late in the first half.
Cam Ward was just 2-for-7 passing for 42 yards in the first half. Easton Stick was not impressive either, completing 12-of-19 passes for just 78 yards and an interception.
That's a defensive drive that Falcons coach Raheem Morris is going to be very upset at. Atlanta had only given up just six points and effectively stymied the Titans' offense for most of the first half.
Credit Brandon Allen for managing the Titans' two-minute offense. But a 7-yard pass on third-and-2 gave the Titans a first down and life. Then, an 11-yard pass to James Proche. The Falcons' defense just can't give these Titans receivers that much space.
It culminates in a brilliant 25-yard pass and catch from Allen to Gunnar Helm, who jumped up in between Falcons defenders in the end zone to secure the touchdown. Now, it's a 10-point game with Atlanta going to be chasing on offense.
Q2 0:38 - Titans 13, Falcons 3
What a throw and catch for Tennessee!
Brandon Allen fires a strike to tight end Gunnar Helm down the seam for a 25-yard score. The tight end was double covered but Allen placed the pass toward his back shoulder and Helm went up to get it over both Falcons defenders.
The extra point by Slye is good.
If there's a positive for the Titans offense tonight, it's wide receiver Elic Ayomanor. The 22-year-old Canadian from Medicine Hat, Alberta, has two catches for 47 yards. His longest catch of the night was 35 yards off a pass from Cam Ward in the first quarter.
The Titans will hope to get more positive yardage from their receivers in the second half.
Q2 1:21 - Titans 6, Falcons 3
On third-and-2, Allen checks it down to Julius Chestnut for a gain of 7 yards to move the sticks.
Q2 2:30 - Titans 6, Falcons 3
Another terrible drive by the Falcons still ends in points because of the excellent field position after the interception.
Younghoe Koo boots through a 42-yard field goal to cut Atlanta's deficit in half.
Natrone Brooks of the Falcons went undrafted in 2023. He's trying to earn his spot on Atlanta after appearing in nine games in 2024. The 25-year-old cornerback tallied one tackle and one QB hit last season.
Tonight, Brooks gets Atlanta's first takeaway, running back 33 yards. A nice job sneaking underneath the route of the Titans receiver to secure the interception.
At least there's no quarterback controversy in Tennessee, either...
Q2 5:32 - Titans 6, Falcons 0
Brandon Allen steps up in the pocket and unleashes a throw directly to Falcons corner Natrone Brooks. The Titans finally got a first down but immediately gave the ball away.

What's the biggest difference for Michael Penix Jr. now heading into his second NFL season compared to the awkward situation he found himself in when he was a rookie? He didn't hesitate when asked that by the Falcons' broadcast.
💬 'Honestly, a lot of confidence. Especially having an offseason with the guys, being able to have those reps that I wasn't able to have last year, it brings a lot of confidence. I'm ready to go.'
Obviously, most of the quarterback focus in this game is on Cam Ward. But Easton Stick's struggles are worth monitoring, too. As the Falcons broadcast pointed out, Stick could essentially be battling to be the Falcons' backup quarterback soon — if and when an injury elsewhere opens up a potential trade avenue for Kirk Cousins.
It's no secret that the battle for the fifth and sixth receivers for the Atlanta Falcons will be contested. At least four to five receivers are fighting for two spots.
On this latest drive, Chris Blair had an Easton Stick pass placed perfectly within his grasp. But Blair couldn't corral the ball, resulting in an incomplete pass. The 27-year-old did make a 12-yard reception later in the drive on third-and-17. But that dropped ball is costly when you're one of the receivers fighting for playing time in the regular season. Q2 10:40 - Titans 6, Falcons 0
Punts are fun, right? Another ugly drive for the Falcons ends as Chris Blair is brought down 5 yards short of the sticks on third down.
Cam Ward is done for the night. Brandon Allen is now in at quarterback for the Titans.
To Lukas' earlier point, there's another absolutely brutal penalty for the Falcons as an explosive run by Nathan Carter past midfield is negated due to a hold.
It's approaching halfway through the second quarter, and the Tennessee Titans only have one first down.
Yes, this isn't a drill. One first down.
Cam Ward only has two completions tonight. He's showcasing his throwing speed, but the receivers are struggling to make the catches. Only two catches tonight so far for the Titans.
Not good enough!
Q2 12:47 - Titans 6, Falcons 0
Cam Ward and company quickly go three-and-out. The rookie attempts to find Elic Ayomanor down the seam, but he is covered tightly by Dee Alford. The Titans' wideout wanted a flag but does not get one.
Tennessee punts again. These offenses have been rather unimpressive so far.
Entering the second quarter, the Atlanta Falcons only had one penalty.
But the flags started flying on Atlanta's first drive on offense this quarter. Two false starts back up the Falcons, unable to get a first down on the drive.
Oh, and the Titans commit a holding penalty on the ensuing punt. The coaches on both teams are going to have a lot of film to comb through before Week 1 to reduce the mistakes.
Q2 13:42 - Titans 6, Falcons 0
Two false starts completely derail the Falcons' drive as Stick fails to connect with Chris Blair on third-and-long.
Atlanta punts again.

Caitlin Clark can dunk on LeBron James in NBA 2K26
Some sports moments can only happen in video games, like Indiana Fever superstar guard Caitlin Clark dunking on superstar Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James. A viral clip from the upcoming NBA/WNBA video game shows Clark dunking on James and even taunting him after the fact. Again, this can only happen in a video game, but what a glorious example of why video games are so fun. Watch this as many times as you'd like! Whenever you play with the Fever against the Lakers, make sure to recreate this hysterical clip. When does NBA 2K26 come out? The game will be released on Friday, Sept. 5. A'ja Wilson uses fart-based simile to describe forcing wins as Aces extend win streak to 6: "All you get is sh**"
After a tough run in the middle of the season, the Las Vegas Aces are turning things around. The Aces got a big 86-83 win over the Phoenix Mercury on Friday night to extend to a six-game win streak. Las Vegas star A'ja Wilson had another massive game, putting up 30 points and 16 rebounds in the win. And afterwards, Wilson dropped an all-time simile to describe the frustration and newfound patience she's had this season. "And I told myself after (the) All-Star break to just let the game come to me, like it's gonna be what it's gonna be," Wilson said postgame. "If I try (to) force it because I want this win so bad for my team, it's like forcing a fart. All you get is sh**. "I've just really learned to be patient with myself, but also with my teammates," she added. Chelsea Gray, who literally dropped her jaw after Wilson's remark, could only say one thing in response: "That's gonna go viral." Wilson's performance was her seventh 30-point game this season, and her 16th double-double. Her most recent 30-point double-double was last Sunday, as the 29-year-old center put up 32 points and 20 rebounds in a historic showing against the Connecticut Sun. Wilson is currently averaging a double-double, with an average of 22.3 points and 10 rebounds per game, and leads the Aces in most of the major categories, including steals, blocks and minutes played. But Wilson's success also means a lot of pressure on her to lead the Aces' to a win. Las Vegas has only lost during two of Wilson's double-double games this year, meaning that 12 of the team's 14 losses have come on days when Wilson wasn't operating at her highest (though still very high) level — and that no one else on the Aces was able to step up in the meantime. On Friday, at least, Wilson had a little bit more help. Gray put up 16 points and nine assists to flirt with a double-double, while Jackie Young had 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the win. Jewell Loyd had 10 points off the bench. Are the Aces turning their season around? The Aces started the season with a 5-5 record, showing off some early issues and prompting some early questions. Though things started to tick up again, Las Vegas then came out of the All-Star break with a couple of brutal games, including a 31-point loss to the Minnesota Lynx followed by another, historically bad 53-point loss to the Lynx a week later. But since that later loss, the Aces have yet to lose. Sure, there was a win over the league-worst Connecticut Sun, but also a win over the No. 2 New York Liberty, a pair of wins over the red-hot Golden State Valkyries, and Friday night's victory over the 19-13 Mercury. After several dominant years and back-to-back championships, there's been a relative slump for the Aces over the past two seasons. But things are going better for Las Vegas as the team approaches the home stretch of the regular season. The Aces are 20-14, ranked No. 5 and well in place for a playoff position; Wilson, a three-time league MVP, looks in fine form again. Plus, Las Vegas has some easy opponents upcoming, including the Dallas Wings on Sunday and a pair of games against the Chicago Sky. It might not be an easy cruise to the postseason, but things are looking up again.

C.J. Stroud's TD pass helps Texans defeat Panthers 20-3 in preseason
HOUSTON (AP) — C.J. Stroud threw a touchdown pass in limited work in his preseason debut to help the Houston Texans to a 20-3 win over the Carolina Panthers on Saturday. Stroud, who sat out in last week's 20-10 loss at Minnesota, played two series Saturday, going 6 for 8 for 44 yards. The Texans punted on their first possession before Stroud connected with Nico Collins on a 5-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to cap the second drive and make it 7-0. Collins is coming off consecutive 1,000-yard seasons after he led the Texans with 68 receptions for 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns despite missing five games with an injury. Nick Chubb ran five times for 25 yards in his Texans' debut after spending his first seven seasons in Cleveland. Chubb played with the starters with Joe Mixon out recovering from a foot injury he sustained this offseason. Stroud, who has led the Texans to the postseason in both of his first two seasons, has a new offensive coordinator this year in Nick Caley after the former Patriots and Rams assistant was hired this offseason following the firing of Bobby Slowik. Carolina's Bryce Young, the first overall pick in the 2023 draft when Stroud was taken second, failed to move the offense in two drives. He was 0 for 2 and was sacked once Saturday after directing the offense for two drives with a TD pass in last week's 30-10 loss to Cleveland. Andy Dalton replaced him and was 2 of 4 for 22 yards before leaving with a right elbow injury. Rookie Ryan Fitzgerald's 52-yard field goal cut the lead to 7-3 about two minutes before halftime. Ka'imi Fairbairn made a 41-yard field goal just before halftime and added a 35-yard kick early in the third quarter to push the lead to 13-3. The Texans intercepted third-string quarterback Jack Plummer on consecutive drives in the second half. Damon Arnette grabbed the second one and three plays later the Texans made it 20-3 when British Brooks scored on a 1-yard run. Arnette, a first-round pick in 2020, is attempting a comeback after his career was derailed by legal troubles and he played just 13 games over two seasons before being released by the Raiders. He hasn't appeared in a regular-season NFL game since 2021 and last played for the UFL's Houston Roughnecks. Sitting out Carolina cornerback Jaycee Horn didn't play because of a thumb injury and left guard Damien Lewis also sat out because of a shoulder injury. Up next Panthers: Wrap up the preseason Thursday night when they host Pittsburgh. Texans: End their preseason Saturday at Detroit. ___ AP NFL:
