C.J. Stroud's TD pass helps Texans defeat Panthers 20-3 in preseason
Stroud, who sat out in last week's 20-10 loss at Minnesota, played two series Saturday, going 6 for 8 for 44 yards. The Texans punted on their first possession before Stroud connected with Nico Collins on a 5-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to cap the second drive and make it 7-0.
Collins is coming off consecutive 1,000-yard seasons after he led the Texans with 68 receptions for 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns despite missing five games with an injury.
Nick Chubb ran five times for 25 yards in his Texans' debut after spending his first seven seasons in Cleveland. Chubb played with the starters with Joe Mixon out recovering from a foot injury he sustained this offseason.
Stroud, who has led the Texans to the postseason in both of his first two seasons, has a new offensive coordinator this year in Nick Caley after the former Patriots and Rams assistant was hired this offseason following the firing of Bobby Slowik.
Carolina's Bryce Young, the first overall pick in the 2023 draft when Stroud was taken second, failed to move the offense in two drives. He was 0 for 2 and was sacked once Saturday after directing the offense for two drives with a TD pass in last week's 30-10 loss to Cleveland.
Andy Dalton replaced him and was 2 of 4 for 22 yards before leaving with a right elbow injury.
Rookie Ryan Fitzgerald's 52-yard field goal cut the lead to 7-3 about two minutes before halftime.
Ka'imi Fairbairn made a 41-yard field goal just before halftime and added a 35-yard kick early in the third quarter to push the lead to 13-3.
The Texans intercepted third-string quarterback Jack Plummer on consecutive drives in the second half. Damon Arnette grabbed the second one and three plays later the Texans made it 20-3 when British Brooks scored on a 1-yard run.
Arnette, a first-round pick in 2020, is attempting a comeback after his career was derailed by legal troubles and he played just 13 games over two seasons before being released by the Raiders. He hasn't appeared in a regular-season NFL game since 2021 and last played for the UFL's Houston Roughnecks.
Sitting out
Carolina cornerback Jaycee Horn didn't play because of a thumb injury and left guard Damien Lewis also sat out because of a shoulder injury.

The USGA announced Sunday the remaining five selections to captain Nathan Smith's 10-man squad – newly minted U.S. Amateur champion Mason Howell, Oklahoma's Jase Summy, Texas' Tommy Morrison, Notre Dame's Jacob Modleski and mid-amateur Stewart Hagestad. World No. 1 Jackson Koivun of Auburn was among the earlier selections, along with Virginia's Ben James, Ole Miss' Michael La Sasso, and Oklahoma State teammates Preston Stout and Ethan Fang. This will be Hagestad's fifth Walker Cup as he was on winning teams in 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023. Summy was coming off winning the Western Amateur while Modleski was a semifinalist at the Western and a quarterfinalist at Olympic. Eagles Star Credits Myles Garrett for Sharpening His Game

Saturday's game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Cleveland Browns was mostly reserved for guys who are in position battles and looking to make the roster. Practice in the days leading up to the game is where some of the elites at their position battled it out. The Eagles' offensive lineman, Jordan Mailata, spent plenty of time battling against one of the NFL's top edge rushers in Myles Garrett. Speaking with reporters, Mailata didn't hold back on the level of difficulty Garrett brought to the table. "It was kind of just like this: Lose-win-lose-lose-lose-win-lose-lose-lose-win," Mailata told reporters, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia. "That's just how it felt like. And I just kept on saying, 'Keep it pushing for the next play, and keep trying to just do your job and then we'll fix it up later.'" "How is he still below my knees and he's bending the corner? He starts the rush in a four-point stance and by the time he's four yards up the field he's still at that same height, and it's kind of like, 'What am I supposed to do there? Just jump on him?' Not that that's even possible. He'll just carry me to the QB.'" Mailata continued. As difficult as the challenge was, Mailata certainly sees the benefit in going against a guy like Garrett early on in the preseason. "Any time you get an opportunity to go up against the best, and he truly is the best at that position, you've got to take advantage of the opportunities," the Eagle added. "Especially for a training rep. So I think it's gotten me better. I have a lot of film to go off now and watch and see how I can refine and sharpen and learn from yesterday and today. ... There's no one like Myles. So you can't apply what Miles does to anyone else. Cause he's just a freak. He's a freak." Since entering the NFL out of Texas A&M in 2017 as the No. 1 overall pick, Garrett has lived up to the hype. In 117 games, he's got over 350 tackles, 102.5 sacks, 20 forced fumbles, and six fumble recoveries. Garrett was the Defensive Player of the Year in 2023 and has made All-Pro six times.
