C.J. Stroud's TD pass helps Texans defeat Panthers 20-3 in preseason
Stroud, who sat out in last week's 20-10 loss at Minnesota, played two series Saturday, going 6 for 8 for 44 yards. The Texans punted on their first possession before Stroud connected with Nico Collins on a 5-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to cap the second drive and make it 7-0.
Collins is coming off consecutive 1,000-yard seasons after he led the Texans with 68 receptions for 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns despite missing five games with an injury.
Nick Chubb ran five times for 25 yards in his Texans' debut after spending his first seven seasons in Cleveland. Chubb played with the starters with Joe Mixon out recovering from a foot injury he sustained this offseason.
Stroud, who has led the Texans to the postseason in both of his first two seasons, has a new offensive coordinator this year in Nick Caley after the former Patriots and Rams assistant was hired this offseason following the firing of Bobby Slowik.
Carolina's Bryce Young, the first overall pick in the 2023 draft when Stroud was taken second, failed to move the offense in two drives. He was 0 for 2 and was sacked once Saturday after directing the offense for two drives with a TD pass in last week's 30-10 loss to Cleveland.
Andy Dalton replaced him and was 2 of 4 for 22 yards before leaving with a right elbow injury.
Rookie Ryan Fitzgerald's 52-yard field goal cut the lead to 7-3 about two minutes before halftime.
Ka'imi Fairbairn made a 41-yard field goal just before halftime and added a 35-yard kick early in the third quarter to push the lead to 13-3.
The Texans intercepted third-string quarterback Jack Plummer on consecutive drives in the second half. Damon Arnette grabbed the second one and three plays later the Texans made it 20-3 when British Brooks scored on a 1-yard run.
Arnette, a first-round pick in 2020, is attempting a comeback after his career was derailed by legal troubles and he played just 13 games over two seasons before being released by the Raiders. He hasn't appeared in a regular-season NFL game since 2021 and last played for the UFL's Houston Roughnecks.
Sitting out
Carolina cornerback Jaycee Horn didn't play because of a thumb injury and left guard Damien Lewis also sat out because of a shoulder injury.
Up next
Panthers: Wrap up the preseason Thursday night when they host Pittsburgh.
Texans: End their preseason Saturday at Detroit.

Gotham FC's unbeaten streak ends with crushing loss to Houston after lengthy weather delay
The push to secure an NWSL playoff berth will take a pause this week for the start of the CONCACAF W Champions Cup. Gotham FC will have to recover quickly for the start of that tournament title defense on Wednesday after they conceded an own goal early in the second half and the decisive tally in added time following a 2-hour weather delay for a crushing 2-1 loss Sunday to the Houston Dash in Harrison, N.J. 'Obviously, a difficult one to take,' Gotham coach Juan Carlos Amorós said after the end of his team's four-match unbeaten streak. 'The team did everything they needed to do to win the game apart from scoring goals. 'We dominated so much, had so many chances, but with one shot I think they were able to score two goals. It was difficult to take.' 6 Gotham FC reacts after allowing the game-winning goal during their Aug. 17 loss to Houston. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Leading scorer Esther González found the back of the net in the first half for Gotham, who fell to 5-5-6 and missed an opportunity to pass Racing Louisville FC into the seventh of eight playoff positions in the league. It also marked the first of three home games in seven days for Gotham, who will play host to CF Monterrey Femenil at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island in group-stage play of the Champions Cup. 'There were some very good moments, but it was an unfortunate way to end it. 'We do have another game coming up very quickly, so we can let this one sting for a little bit, but we definitely have to refocus as soon as possible and move on to the next.' 6 Esther González battles for possession during Gotham FC's loss to Houston on Aug. 17. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post This marked the first match between the teams since a scoreless draw March 26 in Houston, when Gotham defender and U.S. women's national team regular Tierna Davidson suffered a season-ending ACL tear in her left knee. USWNT standout Rose Lavelle rang a left-footed shot off the post in the eighth minute, and the rebound found its way to Esther's feet in the middle of the box. 6 Esther González reacts after scoring during Gotham FC's loss to Houston on Aug. 17. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post She slotted her league-high 11th goal of the season into the right corner for a 1-0 Gotham lead. That advantage carried into halftime, but the Dash evened the score in the 51st minute with an own goal that was put past goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger on a pass-back attempt by Gotham center back and national team veteran Emily Sonnett. The match was delayed for two hours and 18 minutes later in the second half due to lightning in the area, and neither side scored in regulation until Houston's Michelle Azolie dashed behind the defense on the right wing and blasted a shot beyond Berger's reach in the 93rd minute. 6 Rose Lavelle looks to pass the ball during Gotham FC's loss to Houston on Aug. 17. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post It appeared — and Amorós believed — that Azolie might have been offside on the play, but VAR upheld the goal. 'We're naturally super-disappointed,' center back Jess Carter said. 'We felt like we dominated the game, so to come away with a loss is really disappointing, and the way we lost in the last minute was really tough. … But it's one we've gotta get over really quick because we have another game in three days.'

U.S. Walker Cup team solidified for matches at Cypress Point
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler discusses his BMW Championship victory, reflecting on what made the win special, if comparing him to Tiger Woods is fair, how he measures his improvement and why golf "is not just a game." SAN FRANCISCO – The U.S. Walker Cup team for next month's match at Cypress Point is complete. The USGA announced Sunday the remaining five selections to captain Nathan Smith's 10-man squad – newly minted U.S. Amateur champion Mason Howell, Oklahoma's Jase Summy, Texas' Tommy Morrison, Notre Dame's Jacob Modleski and mid-amateur Stewart Hagestad. World No. 1 Jackson Koivun of Auburn was among the earlier selections, along with Virginia's Ben James, Ole Miss' Michael La Sasso, and Oklahoma State teammates Preston Stout and Ethan Fang. This will be Hagestad's fifth Walker Cup as he was on winning teams in 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023. Summy was coming off winning the Western Amateur while Modleski was a semifinalist at the Western and a quarterfinalist at Olympic. Morrison solidified his spot by making match play at the Western and U.S. amateurs. Howell earned an automatic spot with his 7-and-6 win over Jackson Herrington. Among those left off the team were high-schooler Miles Russell, who also made the quarters this week and would've been the youngest Walker Cupper ever at 16 years old, and mid-amateur Evan Beck, the reigning U.S. Mid-Amateur champion. The 50th Walker Cup, which pits a team U.S. amateurs against those from Great Britain and Ireland, will take place Sept. 6-7 at Cypress Point Club in Pebble Beach, California. The GB&I team will be finalized Monday.

Eagles Star Credits Myles Garrett for Sharpening His Game
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Saturday's game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Cleveland Browns was mostly reserved for guys who are in position battles and looking to make the roster. Practice in the days leading up to the game is where some of the elites at their position battled it out. The Eagles' offensive lineman, Jordan Mailata, spent plenty of time battling against one of the NFL's top edge rushers in Myles Garrett. Speaking with reporters, Mailata didn't hold back on the level of difficulty Garrett brought to the table. "It was kind of just like this: Lose-win-lose-lose-lose-win-lose-lose-lose-win," Mailata told reporters, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia. "That's just how it felt like. And I just kept on saying, 'Keep it pushing for the next play, and keep trying to just do your job and then we'll fix it up later.'" Defensive end Myles Garrett #95 of the Cleveland Browns smiles during training camp at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus on July 26, 2025 in Berea, Ohio. Defensive end Myles Garrett #95 of the Cleveland Browns smiles during training camp at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus on July 26, 2025 in Berea, was admittedly stunned by what Garrett was bringing to the table throughout the week. As the former Rugby star has developed into one of the top blockers in the game, he doesn't often face as many questions for himself, but the All-Pro pass rusher gave Mailata a run for his money. "How is he still below my knees and he's bending the corner? He starts the rush in a four-point stance and by the time he's four yards up the field he's still at that same height, and it's kind of like, 'What am I supposed to do there? Just jump on him?' Not that that's even possible. He'll just carry me to the QB.'" Mailata continued. As difficult as the challenge was, Mailata certainly sees the benefit in going against a guy like Garrett early on in the preseason. "Any time you get an opportunity to go up against the best, and he truly is the best at that position, you've got to take advantage of the opportunities," the Eagle added. "Especially for a training rep. So I think it's gotten me better. I have a lot of film to go off now and watch and see how I can refine and sharpen and learn from yesterday and today. ... There's no one like Myles. So you can't apply what Miles does to anyone else. Cause he's just a freak. He's a freak." Since entering the NFL out of Texas A&M in 2017 as the No. 1 overall pick, Garrett has lived up to the hype. In 117 games, he's got over 350 tackles, 102.5 sacks, 20 forced fumbles, and six fumble recoveries. Garrett was the Defensive Player of the Year in 2023 and has made All-Pro six times.
