First win for Somerset Women a 'long time coming'

BBC News09-07-2025
Somerset all-rounder Niamh Holland said victory had been a "long time coming" as the club ended a nine-game T20 Blast winless streak.Somerset beat Essex by four wickets to win their first match since the tournament began on 30 May. All-rounder Holland was wearing the skipper's armband for the first time with captain Sophie Luff out with a calf strain."It feels great to finally get it over the line, it feels like it's been a long time coming," she told BBC Radio Somerset."I feel like we've had a lot of these games where we've been so tight, but I'm glad that people stood up and got us over the line."
Somerset had been close to victory previously this campaign before falling in the closing stages however Holland praised her team-mates' resolve to see a match out for the first time. Australian international Amanda-Jade Wellington made 29 from 23 balls and shared in a stand of 45 for the fourth wicket with Fran Wilson.Wellington and Alex Griffiths needed 16 runs off the final 17 balls and held on to clinch the win as they successfully reached the winning target of 156 with three balls to spare. While the club remain bottom of the T20 Blast table with six points, Holland said she hoped the elusive first win would kick-start their campaign."That's what we struggled with is someone to finish it off and we've finally done it which is great," Holland said."I think it's really important that we take this momentum."It might not feel like that all the time with all the results but we've been picking small things up each game to try and almost piece them together and it feels like we've got there [on Tuesday] which is brilliant."

Alan Shearer says Alexander Isak statement poured ‘flames on the fire'

Former Newcastle captain Alan Shearer believes wantaway striker Alexander Isak has poured 'flames on the fire' of his stand-off with the Magpies by accusing the club of breaking promises, and said his comments 'don't benefit anyone'. Isak has been trying to force a move out of Newcastle all summer but was frustrated earlier this month when the club rejected an offer from Liverpool, reportedly worth £110million plus add-ons. Having sat out their pre-season tour of Asia and trained alone since, missing Saturday's goalless draw at Aston Villa in Newcastle's Premier League opener, Isak escalated the situation further on Tuesday night with a post on Instagram in which he said 'the relationship can't continue'. Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said the situation is now an 'absolute mess' as he pointed the finger at Isak's agent Vlado Lemic. 'If I was him, I'd get his agent in a room and sack him on the spot immediately, because he is meant to be giving him the advice to sign that six-year deal and there's no get out clause,' Shearer said. 'I mean, it's ridiculous. And to take anyone's word in football… it's nonsensical to say that someone said, 'Oh, I'll be able to get out at the end of the season'. Really? I mean, come on… 'I've always said there are two sides to every story, but my feelings are exactly the same: he's gone about it in the wrong way… 'I just think even releasing this statement last night has thrown flames onto the fire, which he didn't need to do. 'I get that we needed to hear his side of the story and we've heard that now, and I'm not saying I don't believe him or I don't believe Newcastle, I'm just saying it's very, very messy for him and for the football club. It doesn't benefit anyone.' In his statement, posted on Instagram on Tuesday evening, Isak had said: 'The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To act now as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. 'When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue.' Newcastle responded by denying that Isak had been granted any assurances over a potential move. 'We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer,' a club statement said. This is the latest episode in what has already been the primary saga of this transfer window. Liverpool had a bid rejected at the start of August but have retained an interest in a player who scored 27 goals in 42 games for Newcastle last season despite signing Hugo Ekitike – a forward who was also targeted by Newcastle. Newcastle are said to value Isak at £150million, and would only consider a sale if they have signed a replacement. As well as missing out on Ekitike, Newcastle were frustrated in their pursuit of Benjamin Sesko who chose to join Manchester United. Isak has three years remaining on his contract at St James' Park.

Crystal Palace transfer news: Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi to start in CL tie

Oliver Glasner insists Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi will both start Crystal Palace's Conference League play-off first leg against Fredrikstad on Thursday night. The future of both men – heavily linked to Tottenham and Liverpool respectively – is set to remain a hot topic when Palace host the Norwegians at Selhurst Park. Guehi and Eze trained in Beckenham on Wednesday morning, and the Eagles boss bristled at the suggestion he – or any manager – should expect any less than full commitment from players still attached to a deal. 'It's always the right of a club and the duty of a player to give 100 per cent as long as he is under contract,' said Glasner. 'Before Chelsea, I think many of you were suprised that Marc and Ebs started and played almost the whole game. 'Most of you will be suprised that they will start again tomorrow because of all the rumours. But again, they are committed. 'They are committed to the team, they have a contract here, they played a crucial part that we could be so successful, and they will play a crucial part as long as they are here. 'Because they are good, they are committed to the team, and when one of the players leave, which I don't know at the moment, then they want to leave as players who always gave 100 per cent for Crystal Palace. 'This is what they did since they signed, and this is what we expect from them until the end of their contract, whenever this is.'

Okafor and a few more?

As Leeds close in on the signing of Switzerland international winger Noah Okafor from AC Milan, pending his medical, it seems supporters are still wondering when or if another pure centre forward will arrive at Elland Road. That is because Okafor, 25, who is expected to cost around £17m, can be viewed as this season's Manor Solomon rather than as a continue to be asked about the injury risk surrounding former Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin which the club have been candid in recognising, especially after bringing in Lukas Nmecha who has had his own fitness issues too. However, Calvert-Lewin, was not a knee-jerk purchase, by the club's recruitment. He was seen as a key target who Leeds are delighted to land as he turned down Champions League football and other attractive offers to settle on Elland Road. At 28 years of age, with more than 50 and 200 Premier League goals and appearances respectively, the Yorkshireman will feel he can be the main in the track record of Daniel Farke and his medical staff of successfully managing players like Solomon, Sam Byram, Ethan Ampadu and Pascal Struijk back from injury in recent seasons. It is understandable that with Calvert-Lewin's quality, ability and experience, on a free transfer he could prove to be a canny piece of Nmecha, Joel Piroe and home-grown Harry Gray constitute Farke's fire power and although he is open to further options up front he did admit that he was cautious of having too many strikers. He's said: "I'm not a believer having six or seven (strikers) in the squad. I wouldn't rule out another right now the focus is on other positions." That is where Okafor comes in and also the search for another full-back with Leicester City's James Justin one of a few defenders in the club's sights. The Foxes captain's former team-mate Jamie Vardy, who is without a club, has been suggested by some supporters as worth a punt by Leeds. But at 38 years of age and with the physicality United have typically been looking at in their recruits, the former England man does not fit the profile. Do you have a question about Leeds United?
