A new report has revealed that over half of Brits have pulled a sickie due to the roasting weather impacting their sleep - and it's only set to get worse, with temperatures expected to spike again this weekend
Heatwaves are believed to cost the UK economy an average of £5.98bn each year, according to a recent study, and a significant factor is sleep. More than a third of Brits lose between one to two hours of sleep per night during a heatwave.
As a result, over half of Brits have admitted to calling in sick due to the scorching weather affecting their sleep, others have arrived late or cancelled social plans. Worryingly for UK employers, the decrease in sleep quality is impacting productivity levels with the average adult losing nearly 14 hours of efficient work time during heatwaves.


According to the study commissioned by BOXT, only 5 percent of UK homes are constructed to cope with the temperatures that the country is currently experiencing.
Overheated Brits are also feeling the pinch financially. The research shows half of participants (57%) are splurging £150 on iced drinks and portable fans to stay cool, while a staggering 28% confessed to shelling out £300 for the same items.
"We've long focused on keeping heat in but with hotter summers becoming the norm, good insulation is just as important for keeping our homes cool," said Adam Knight, lead engineer at BOXT.
"Most of us are relying on temporary cooling hacks and still not sleeping well. We're seeing more hot, humid nights in the UK but our homes aren't built for it," he said.
"Ask any parent with a cranky toddler after a sleepless night, or a commuter sweating through another sticky train journey. Heat affects behaviour and brain power."

Despite the nationwide struggles, only 5 percent of Brits have a permanent air-conditioning unit fitted in their home and 14 percent consider the concept an American or Mediterranean 'luxury'.
But it might not be as expensive as they think. You could get a unit installed with flexible finance options starting at just £30.67 a month with no deposit, says BOXT.
Those who are happy to splash the cash upfront could purchase an air-conditioning unit for £2,199.

Adam added: "Most people assume air conditioning is expensive or only for luxury homes – but it's more affordable than you may think. And, unlike fans or gadgets that just circulate air, proper AC cools the whole room, not just the space directly in front of you."
To help struggling Brits get through their workday when temperatures rise, sleep expert and psychologist Hope Bastine has shared her top advice on how to get a good night's sleep.
Heatwave hacks to improve your sleep
Freeze your sheets

Go for natural linen or eucalyptus fibre sheets – they wick away moisture, dry quickly and help air flow. To stay cool without soaking your bed, focus on smaller items.
Stick to freezing just your pillowcase or a light throw, not the whole bedding set. Pop them in a plastic bag and freeze for 15 minutes before bed.
Ditch your partner

Cuddling partners and pets can be comforting but not in a heatwave – so try to sleep solo if possible. Body heat is your worst enemy on hot nights. Even one extra person in bed can raise the temp by a few degrees.
Skip the cold shower before bed
Instead, Hope recommends having a lukewarm shower 90 minutes before bed, which helps kickstart your body's cooling process and helps wind you down.
Cut the caffeine
Iced coffees might feel like a heatwave treat but caffeine is a diuretic and contributes to dehydration, one of the top causes of disturbed sleep. It also raises your body temperature, which is what you want to avoid.

Parts of the UK are set for several days of blistering heat as temperatures could rise into the mid-30Cs due to a 'heat dome' caused by a high pressure system over the continent Brits have three sweltering days ahead as a ' heat dome ' hits, as parts of the country could hit 34C. According to the latest Met Office report, Monday could be the hottest day of the year. The national weather agency's forecasters reckon temperatures are likely to exceed 30C in central and eastern England quite widely, possibly reaching as high as 34C in London and towards Cambridge. Last Saturday holds the current record for hottest day of 2025, when 33.2C was recorded in Charlwood, near Gatwick. But another dramatic rise in temperatures is now on the cards thanks to a high pressure system over the continent. ‌ ‌ The so-called 'heat dome' is due to hot air trapped by high pressure taking hold in Europe. Temperature maps show that the hottest parts over the next three days are in central and eastern England where the mercury could rise above 30C. The Met Office outlook for Saturday reads: "Cloud and rain in the north becoming confined to central parts later. Otherwise, sunny spells developing either side. Feeling hot in the southeast, but rather cool in the northwest." And for Tuesday to Sunday it continues: "Dry with sunny spells for many places, but some rain mainly affecting the far northwest at times. Turning hot in southern areas, particularly in the southeast, with warm nights too." Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin, has told how the "eastern zone" will see most heat while there could be some rain in the north. 'The weekend is going to be a hot one. For most of us, though, it's going to be a fairly grey start and it will be quite a damp start through central Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland," he said. "That rain should be edging away to the south, so Belfast cheering up, Glasgow, Edinburgh also looking brighter by the time we get to Saturday lunchtime, and a much brighter day overall for the Highlands of Scotland. ‌ 'Still quite breezy, quite a gusty wind blowing here. Quite a grey day over the far north of England, rain on and off across Cumbria. North Wales likely to see a bit of rain, particularly Anglesey at times. But a good chunk of England and Wales will stay dry and we'll have some sunshine, certainly for East Wales, much of southwest England, the Midlands and eastern England too. And it's in this eastern zone where we'll see the highest temperatures, likely to get up to 29, 30 degrees in and around the capital. 'So, the heat starting to pick up through Saturday and into Saturday night. It'll be very warm. We'll continue with a zone of cloudier weather over Cumbria bringing some rain and drizzle, northern parts of Lanarkshire, and again the far northwest of Wales. But either side of it, many places staying dry and staying fine on Saturday evening, a balmy evening certainly across the south. The winds will be lighter in southern areas on Saturday compared to today. 'On Sunday, again a very warm night, so a humid start. And still a zone of cloudier weather over parts of Northern England, North Wales. The rain should be petering out, but we may see another pulse of rain just pushing back towards Northern Ireland later on. For most places, though, Sunday is dry. "Again, a much cooler, fresher feel across Scotland and Northern Ireland compared to further south, where again, where we see some sunshine, and it perhaps won't be quite as sunny on Saturday, a bit more cloud around, so again that humid feel. We should still get up to 30, perhaps even 31 in the capital."

The former manager of a North Wales GP surgery has won compensation of more than £142,000 after one of her bosses branded her an "old knacker" and said her daughter was a "fat p***k". Dr George Williams – a female GP who is one of the two partners at Gardden Road surgery in Rhosllanerchrugog, Wrexham - described then-practice manager Catherine Clark, 62, and her family as "the Clarkashians" in reference to the Kardashians, an American family of celebrities known for their reality TV show, an employment tribunal heard. The judge found Dr Williams and others at the practice "looked down" on Ms Clark as a "source of entertainment and gossip", reports WalesOnline. Dr Williams gossiped about the manager's "Clarkashian" lifestyle and felt she was "incompetent and too old for her job". At one point the GP wrote to her then-boyfriend: "Now trying to dislodge the old knacker but like any decent tumour she has a long root!" When Ms Clark found out such messages had been sent behind her back she was "heartbroken". She had believed Dr Williams was "a very loved and trusted friend" and had confided in her about experiencing anxiety and depression. Ms Clark was prescribed diazepam for those issues but would later learn she had been labelled a "drug-seeker" in WhatsApp messages between surgery colleagues. Dr Williams had also written messages describing Ms Clark's daughter as a "fat p***k" and another family member as "10 pints". The judge said there was no "reasonable and proper cause" for such language. In one conversation she wrote a message about Ms Clark's daughter and another family member getting a Covid test starting with the words: "Clarkashian update." After breaking up with Dr Williams in acrimonious circumstances the GP's ex-boyfriend contacted Ms Clark in December 2021 and informed her what had been said behind her back. He described his ex as having an "obsession" with Ms Clark and her family. Ms Clark said she cried for days after learning about the messages and said she felt devastated. She made complaints about her treatment but felt these had been poorly handled by Gardden Road surgery so she resigned and sued the practice. The judge found that Dr Williams and other staff engaged in "unkind" gossip about Ms Clark including about her prescription medications. Dr Williams claimed the "old knacker" comment was not intended to be derogatory, telling the court she referred to her own mum as "old dear" in an affectionate way. But Judge Harfield said: "We wholly reject that argument – it is a different term and a different phrase said in a wholly different context." The judge upheld claims of constructive unfair dismissal and harassment related to age and disability – as Ms Clark was managing a long-term health condition – as well as discrimination. The surgery was also found to have victimised her by failing to take action against Dr Williams after Ms Clark brought a grievance. Judge Harfield found the surgery created a "intimidating, degrading, humiliating, and offensive" environment for Ms Clark. She awarded a remedy of £142,803 including £60,873 for financial losses, £32,550 for injury to feelings, and £16,844 for unfair dismissal.

The weather agency has issued key advice with one exception as warm and humid weekend lies ahead UK thermometers are poised for another surge this weekend, with weather maps showing a deep red hue, signalling yet another warm phase for countless people. The Met Office forecasts a resurgence of "dry and locally hot weather" by the end of June, with weather charts indicating peaks of 32C on Sunday, June 29, in England's south east. ‌ Forecasts include possible heatwave conditions - meeting or exceding the temperature threshold for three days in a row - as the Met Office notes: "Some places could reach heatwave criteria over the coming few days." ‌ The threshold for a heatwave differs across regions, but it's typically proclaimed when temperatures soar to 28C or above down south or around 25C in most of Scotland. And with scorching temperatures looming, the Met Office has given a time frame for Brits to stay inside. Offering advice for coping with the heat, the national weather agency advises: "If you do go out for exercise or into your garden, try to avoid the hottest part of the day (11am to 3pm) and seek shade where possible." If you are going to be out in the sun at midday, the official guidance states: "Avoid being in the sun for long stretches. Wear lightweight, light-coloured clothing, high factor sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat." Other suggestions for keeping cool include keeping curtains and windows closed during peak sunshine to prevent rooms from becoming stifling. ‌ Sadly (or not, depending on how you look at it!) Scotland is not set for a heatwave in the coming days. Although it's shaping up to be a warm weekend for us, too, it won't be half as sweltering as down south. Friday and Saturday, June 27 and 28, will see the majority of the country sit comfortably in the high teens. Even places further north, like Portree, Ullapool, and Kirkwall, will reap the benefit of such figures. ‌ The north-east, Edinburgh, Berwick-upon-Tweed, and then further south to Dumfries - will climb a bit higher into the 21C mark on Saturday afternoon, according to the Met Office forecast. Sunday will see most places dip back down the high teens again, while the heat will cool off even more as we roll into Monday, where the mid-teens make up the majority of the weather picture for the new week ahead. Again, this is at odds with the heatwave-like figures expected in some of England's biggest cities around this time. After that, Scots should brace for a deluge of rain. The north west will be wettest due to frontal systems driven by the jet stream. Rainfall totals could even exceed 50mm in parts of Cumbria and western Scotland by Friday, July 4. ‌ And there are fears Scotland will bear the brunt of yet another "severe" thunderstorm as a result of the intense warmth south of the border, and some of the jet stream currently over Iberia moving north-east into France. "These storms are likely to remain over the near continent, but there is a risk they could brush the far southeast of England," a Met Office spokesperson said. ‌ With possible repercussions for Scotland, they added: "This creates a favourable environment for large hail, frequent lightning, and torrential rain." In general, from Sunday, June 29, until Tuesday, July 8, the Met Office predicts a period of wetter, windier conditions to the northwest - but doesn't rule out another return to sunshine and toasty temps. "Whilst some rain or showers are possible across the south and east, longer drier spells are more likely, under the influence of higher pressure," the national weather agency said. "There is the chance of some occasional very warm, locally hot weather, as brief bursts of hotter air encroach from the continent, but probably fairly short-lived and perhaps also accompanied by a few thunderstorms at times."
