E-waste factory raided, 300 tonnes of aluminium ingots worth RM2.1mil seized
During the 11am operation, which was conducted jointly with the Department of Environment and the Inland Revenue Board, the raiding team also arrested 25 factory workers comprising Chinese, Bangladeshi, and Myanmar nationals, aged between 20 and 45.
State police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the illegal factory, which had been operating for the past three months, was uncovered following intelligence gathered by the authorities over the past week.
"This factory is believed to have been involved in dismantling and melting electronic components to produce aluminium ingots.
"During the raid, 300 aluminium ingots, each weighing one tonne, were seized, with an estimated total value of RM2.1 million.
"Raw materials such as remote controls and closed-circuit television (CCTV) components awaiting processing were also confiscated," he said during a press conference at the site today.
Dzulkhairi said preliminary investigations showed the factory had allegedly been importing electronic waste from abroad for processing here before re-exporting it to China and other countries.
He said further investigations are underway to trace the factory's owner, adding that authorities do not rule out the possibility of links to other companies operating similar illegal activities.
The case is being investigated under Section 29(1) of the Minor Offences Act and Section 55(1)(b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

China school expels woman for sex with Ukraine man that ‘hurts national dignity'
A Chinese student is facing expulsion from university for having casual sex with a Ukrainian gamer. The student, surnamed Li, has been accused of 'hurting national dignity', sparking online accusations of excessive punishment and rights infringement. An official from Dalian Polytechnic University, in northeastern China's Liaoning province, on July 8, said the institution planned to expel Li for an act of 'misconduct' on December 16, 2024. The 21-year-old was reported to have had a one-night stand with 37-year-old former Counter-Strike player Danylo Teslenko, who is 'Zeus', while he was attending an event in Shanghai last December. Teslenko posted intimate videos and photos of himself and Li in his fan group, and reportedly called her an 'easy girl'. The footage was leaked by his Chinese fans, and Li's information, including her real name, family background, and social media accounts, was doxxed. Some men reportedly harassed the university to punish Li. But many people said it was the reaction of the university that they found shocking. Not only did the university divulge Li's full name, it also cited disciplinary regulations stating that Li's behaviour saw her 'socialise with foreigners improperly and undermine national dignity and the school's reputation'. Many protested against the school over its excessive punishment and the infringement of Li's privacy. 'Her private life is none of the school's business,' one online observer said. It was widely reported that Teslenko was married with a child and that Li had a boyfriend at the time of the fling. However, Teslenko said he was neither married nor in a relationship when he was intimate with Li. He also expressed regret for posting the videos and denied the accusations that he had ever called Chinese girls 'easy'. A UK gaming news website reported that what Teslenko had said in Russian while hugging Li in the video may have been misconstrued as meaning he thought Chinese girls were 'easy'. The school's statement said that Li could appeal the decision by September 7. Li has yet to respond to the school's decision. Jin Lin, a lawyer from Beijing's Xidong Law Firm, told the mainland media outlet Fengmian News that the school's decision does not have legal grounds. According to the Provisions on the Administration of Students in Regular Institutions of Higher Education, students can only be expelled in eight circumstances, none of which match Li's situation. More than one lawyer advised Li to seek legal help and sue the school. The case also triggered accusations of bias against female students. In similar and even more serious cases involving male students, full names were rarely revealed, and some perpetrators received minor punishments. One online observer said: 'We still do not know Uncle Red's full name, but the school cannot wait to publish a female student's name for living her own life.' Uncle Red is a 38-year-old cross-dresser from eastern China's Jiangsu province who went viral worldwide for tricking hundreds of men into having sex with him and filming them. 'She is the biggest victim in this case. The Ukrainian man posted her face without her consent. The men witch-hunted her. Her school further hurt her by expelling her and publishing her name. They all owe her an apology,' said another. The university had not responded to the public comments by the time of writing. - SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST

GOF: Illegal crossings persist along Kelantan-Thai border with over 100 active bases detected
Published on: Thursday, July 17, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 17, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: General Operations Force (GOF) Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the illegal bases are located in the districts of Tumpat, Pasir Mas and Tanah Merah, which serve as key routes for unauthorised cross-border activities. — Bernama pic KOTA BHARU: More than 100 illegal bases detected still exist along the Kelantan-Thailand border despite intensified enforcement and the closure of illegal routes since December last year, raising concerns over the effectiveness of the country's border security. General Operations Force (GOF) Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the illegal bases are located in the districts of Tumpat, Pasir Mas and Tanah Merah, which serve as key routes for unauthorised cross-border activities. Advertisement 'The terrain and the proximity of these illegal bases to public settlements make continuous monitoring challenging,' he told Bernama recently. He said that between Jan 1 and July 14 this year, 71 individuals were arrested for illegally crossing the border via Sungai Golok. The group comprised 54 men and 17 women from Malaysia, Thailand, Pakistan and Myanmar. All arrests were made under Section 5(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, involving 42 Malaysians, 26 Thais, two Pakistanis and one Myanmar national. Nik Ros Azhan said most of the arrests took place along the banks of Sungai Golok, which was previously the main route for residents on both sides of the border. 'Although the closure order was issued some time ago, there are still individuals who try to take advantage of these illegal routes without considering the security and legal risks,' he said. He added that some of those detained claimed they only intended to cross briefly to shop, visit relatives, or for leisure, while others were seeking employment in informal sectors such as construction, plantations, and restaurants. In addition, some arrests were related to the smuggling of subsidised goods. Since Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat ordered the closure of illegal jetties and bases in December 2024, residents with relatives across the border have been forced to use the official route through the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex - even for minor matter The move has also impacted boat operators along Sungai Golok, who now face a lack of customers as people are no longer willing to cross the border freely. Nik Ros Azhan emphasised that the GOF, together with other security agencies, will continue to strengthen border control to safeguard the country's sovereignty. 'Anyone wishing to enter the neighbouring country must use legal routes and comply with the established immigration laws,' he said. On July 5, Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan reiterated the need for stronger border enforcement through increased manpower, enhanced security assets, and integrated cooperation among all relevant agencies. He added that the presence of numerous illegal routes along the Kelantan-Thailand border remains a serious national security concern. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Cambodia arrests over 200 Vietnam citizens in cyberscam crackdown
PHNOM PENH: Cambodian authorities have arrested more than 200 Vietnamese nationals in internet scam centre raids, police said Wednesday (July 16), as Prime Minister Hun Manet ordered a crackdown on cybercrime sweatshops. The United Nations has described Southeast Asia as the "ground zero" of scam centres, where workers typically use romance or business cons to defraud social media users of an estimated US$40 billion annually. Hun Manet issued a directive made public on Tuesday, telling law enforcement and the military "to prevent and crack down on online scams", warning they risk losing their jobs if they fail to take action. Police in the capital Phnom Penh said they raided two buildings housing scammers on Monday and Tuesday, arresting 149 Vietnamese nationals alongside three Chinese citizens and 85 Cambodians. In the coastal city of Sihanoukville, raids on Tuesday at four locations saw 63 Vietnamese nationals arrested and 54 computers seized, according to a police report seen by AFP on Wednesday. Many of those freed from Southeast Asian scam centres say they were trafficked or lured there under false pretences. Abuses in Cambodia's scam centres are happening on a "mass scale", a report published last month by Amnesty International said. There are at least 53 scam compounds in Cambodia where organised criminal groups carry out human trafficking, forced labour, child labour, torture, deprivation of liberty and slavery, the report said. In March, Cambodia deported 119 Thais -- among 230 foreign nationals detained during raids on alleged cyber scam centres in the border city of Poipet. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime warned in April that the scam industry was expanding outside hotspots in Southeast Asia, with criminal gangs building up operations as far as South America, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and some Pacific islands. - AFP
