But they have defied belief to consistently be closest challengers to Liverpool and Arsenal.
Forest are a unique side tactically with some of the league's most underrated players. Here is how they have shocked everyone this year.
Stats just not right
When crunching the numbers, Forest's clinical and resilient side are on show.

Attacking-wise, they rank fourth for shot conversation and 14th for total shots, all while having the least amount of average possession in the division.

So how do they keep so many teams out? Essentially, it is park the bus brilliance.
In Nikola Milenkovic and Murillo they have two great box defenders and full-backs, usually Neco Williams and Ola Aina, rarely go forward.

Nuno cuts his team down the middle with a setup that sees six players defend and four attack.
When out of possession, they sit on the edge of their own box in a 4-4-2 shape and it is extremely narrow and difficult to play through.

They are well-drilled in blocking passing lanes, setting traps to win it back and funnelling the ball wide.
Forest then back themselves should a cross come in, having aerially dominant centre-back and a keeper in-form like Matz Sels are a must.
Teams have so much of the ball but have nowhere to go, it is the magic of the formation.

Forest are so compact and there is no way through for opponents

Dreaming dreams of our Murillo
The Brazilian 22-year-old is not far off
He is so good at giving striker's no space to work with and he is the leader of the back four.
Murillo does this amazing thing where if the ball's on one side of the pitch, he brings the two nearest Forest players closer to him as he marks the rival centre-forward.

The team pulls in towards Murillo when a cross comes in
When opponents are about to cross, Murillo drops two steps and the rest of the team follow suit.
We see players put their hands in the air as a signal before a free-kick and the defensive line then drops. Essentially, Murillo does it in open play. It's amazing.
He also bullies the striker before the ball comes in with clever nudges and holding.

Don't Look Back, Elanga

Elliot Anderson and Morgan Gibbs-White tucked in to frustrate the inverted full-backs formation that so many teams use, again, giving opponents no space to work with.

Wood is the focal point and Elanga is free, ready to float around the striker to cause havoc where he wants.

In transition, passes are always aimed towards Elanga to start the counter-attack.
And the team pulls apart opponent's defensive structures to help with their quick breaks.

Wood drops deep to hold up the ball and runners go beyond him, defensive lines then becomes jagged so they can't play offside as Elanga truly doesn't look back and sprints forward.

Elanga drifts out wide and starts counter-attacks
Where there's Forest, there's Wood
You would be forgiven for thinking
But the veteran striker continues to be the league's most clinical forward, his 19 goals this season is eight more than his expected goals have predicted (only three of his strikes have been penalties too).

Going back to him dropping deep, when Forest win it back with a clearance, he positions himself on the opponent's midfield with the wide players either side of him.
Centre-backs do not want to leave their zone and be dragged miles out, those jagged backline worries, and Wood is able to win headers and flick it on for his speedster team-mates.

Forest are also happy to go long from goal-kicks and put it on Wood's head. They have players around him to pick up the loose balls.
A throwback centre-forward and it is working wonders.
Give 'em Ell
Elliot Anderson is one of the most underappreciated players in the Premier League.
His awareness of where to help defensively and his positional play is brilliant and key to Nuno's system.

He can play on the left of a midfield three, the No.6 role, part of a double pivot and further up the field in attack.
All action Anderson knows when the likes of Elanga,
It is exactly what Nuno demands in a setup that prioritises never being outnumbered defensively.

City revival gets the nod from our writers
TOMMY MARTIN Champions: Liverpool. Could muse on the departure of Trent, the Jota tragedy and whether last season was the lingering fumes of Klopp, but they were 10 points better than the rest and have bought better then everyone else since. Rest of top 5: Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Villa Relegated: Leeds, Burnley, Sunderland. Getting structurally harder for promoted sides to stay up so fancy the trend of last two seasons to continue - though Keith Andrews will have a tough job given their departures. Who'll prove best signing: Florian Wirtz to Liverpool - saw lots of him with Leverkusen in Europe, he was a fully formed top class number 10 at the age of 20 - he will succeed Kevin De Bruyne as the division's creator-in-chief. One surprise: Hardly a surprise but Brighton are going to challenge for a Champions League spot sooner or later; arriviste clubs have broken through in other European leagues, and the smartest club in the league will be the ones to do so if it happens in the Prem. GERRY COX Champions: Manchester City - Pep won't want to miss out again, and has strengthened in all the right places since January Rest of top 5: Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man Utd (or Spurs if they sign Eze) Relegated: West Ham, Leeds, Nottingham Forest. It would be healthy NOT to have the promoted three go straight back down, and Forest will struggle with European commitments. Who'll prove best signing: Tijani Reijnders - perfect player to fill in a Rodri-sized hole at Man City One surprise: Everton to qualify for Europe Read More Liverpool players are too honest for their own good – Arne Slot NICK CALLOW Champions: Arsenal. I have to get this right one day and so does Mikel Arteta. He has recruited well and it is hard to envisage Liverpool being so consistent again. Rest of top 5: City, Liverpool, Chelsea, United - yawn! Relegated: The three teams that came up - it's all about the money! Who'll prove best signing: Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta? Has got a striker as one of six new players, long contracts for Gabriel, Lewis Skelly and Nwaneri with talks moving for Saliba and others. And he's not done yet. One surprise: Despite a poor transfer window at the time of writing, Tottenham to reestablish themselves as a top ten club or above. JASON MELLOR Champions: Manchester City - they'll be back with a razor-sharp focus after taking their eye off the ball last season. Rest of top 5: Liverpool, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Newcastle. Relegated: Brentford, Sunderland, Burnley. Two of the three promoted clubs, in addition to the Bees imploding due to too many changes in important positions on and off the pitch. Who'll prove best signing: Alexander Isak, when he joins Liverpool. One surprise: Arsenal to disappear without trace from the top six. JOHN FALLON Champions: Liverpool - Manchester United's dominance was based on strengthening while winning. Summer recruitment, Isak pending, has been platinum standard. Rest of top 5: Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United. Relegated: West Ham, Burnley, Sunderland. Leeds United can bust the yo-yo cycle, whereas Graham Potter shows no sign of replicating his Brighton harmony. Who'll prove best signing: Caoimhín Kelleher: Manchester United may rue not swooping for the Irishman as his skillset means Brentford bagged a bargain for an initial €15m. One surprise: Manchester City continue to stagnate. With 115 charges hanging over the club, Pep Guardiola has a job on his hands to regain former glories. Transition will require patience. LARRY RYAN Champions: Manchester City - Pep Lijnders to show he was the special sauce, if not a main dish. Rest of top 5: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Aston Villa. Relegated: Tottenham, Sunderland, Burnley. Will set-piece savvy satisfy Spurs fans if it doesn't click quick? Keith Andrews to brush past his old boss in hairy final day escape. Who'll prove best signing: Caoimhín Kelleher, with late save to keep Bees up and secure move to Barcelona. One surprise: Liverpool in drop zone by November, but Slot resists calls for his head to mastermind revival to fourth. Read More 41687106/readmore] IAN WHITTELL Champions: Manchester City - last season's horror show is just the kick up the backside they need to get back on track. Rest of top 5: Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle. Relegated: The three promoted clubs. Sadly it's going to be a case of what comes up must go down. Who'll prove best signing: Joao Pedro at Chelsea. Given the right kind of service, he will score 20-plus goals this season. One surprise: Keith Andrews will confound the critics and do a decent job at Brentford. SHANE DONOVAN Champions: Liverpool - Too much proven quality and winners. Florian Wirtz the standout signing, and if they add to recruitment with additions of Marc Guehi and Alexander Isak, the depth is there to remain consistent throughout. Arsenal a close second. Martin Zubimendi a very decent signing. Rest of top 5: Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Aston Villa. Relegated: Wolves, Sunderland, Burnley. Who'll prove best signing: Thomas Frank and his signing of Joao Palhinha at Spurs. One surprise: Spurs to be less Spursy. Still a signing or two short but could challenge upper echelons of table - fifth to seventh. ADRIAN RUSSELL Champions: Arsenal to get over line the in a genuine two- or three-horse race. It's now or never for Mikel Arteta after the summer's business. Rest of top 5: Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd. Relegated: Burnley, West Ham, Sunderland. Who'll prove best signing: Former Arsenal yellow-card magnet, Granit Xhaka, looks a canny move for Sunderland and will be worth a lot more than the outlay if the Black Cats can be, at least, competitive this campaign. One surprise: Qatar have Man City; we have Brentford. Keith Andrews may be a little heavy with the LinkedIn chat and a lot of his top Bees players have exited in the off-season - but expect the former Ireland midfielder, his skipper Nathan Collins and new signing Caoimhin Kelleher to confound some expectations this term. DARREN NORRIS Champions: While Liverpool will be a tough nut to crack, Arsenal have strengthened in the areas they had to strengthen over the summer and can finally end their run of seconditis. Rest of top 5: Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, and Man United. Relegated: It's likely at least two of three promoted teams will go straight back down and Sunderland look the team best equipped to survive, possibly at Brentford's expense. Who'll prove the best signing: If Arsenal are to dethrone Liverpool, Viktor Gyokeres will need to be breaking the 20-goal barrier. Should he do so, it'll be €73.5m well spent. One surprise: The upside to last season's horror show for Man United is things can only get better and a positive summer on the recruitment front bodes well for their prospects.

Roy Keane issues gloomy prediction over where Manchester United will finish this season
United have spent big money to sign the attacking trio Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha this summer, with Amorim suggesting he has seen encouraging signs in his squad ahead of the big kick-off this weekend. Yet former United captain Keane is less optimistic, as he gave a gloomy verdict to The Overlap when asked where he expects United to finish this season. 'At best United for me, eighth or ninth,' he stated. 'The summer has not been too bad for United, but the proof starts at the weekend. 'They have brought a few attacking players in who know the Premier League. To me, over the last few years, they were bringing in players who were getting used to the pace of the Premier League and they weren't robust enough. The next challenge is can they do it week-in, week-out for United. 'There is positives, but I will judge it over the next few weeks. Are these players up to it, will they score enough goals. 'They still have a lot of problems, of course. Huge questions marks… we will be here all day. They still have to sort out the goalkeeper situation and defensively. 'Don't be putting United in the bracket of Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. They are not in that conversation.' Keane's former United team-mate Wayne Rooney offered up a more optimistic vision of United's ambitions this season, as he told the BBC that Amorim's side could challenge for a top five finish that could be good enough to secure Champions League qualification. 'I still think they need one or two more signings, but I think you can see what Amorim is doing,' said Rooney. 'I think it's looking better for Manchester United, and I think they will sneak into the top five. I hope they do, you never know.' Rooney went on to back Liverpool to retain their title, as they continue to push to sign Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. 'I already had Liverpool as favourites to win the title this year, but if Isak comes in, then I think they're gonna be unstoppable,' he added. 'The quality they've got, as Danny's just alluded [to], and I think a big thing was replacing Trent [Alexander-Arnold]. There's a lot of chances created, a lot of goals came from that side. 'I think [Jeremie] Frimpong has got the attributes to fill that, so I think Liverpool look strong.'

Joao Palhinha predicts ‘something special' from Spurs despite Super Cup defeat
Joao Palhinha believes Tottenham have the hunger to achieve 'something special' this season after their painful Super Cup defeat on penalties by Paris St Germain. Spurs were minutes away from winning a second trophy in the space of three months after goals by Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero either side of half-time put them in control in Udine. PSG upped the ante in the second period and, after Lee Kang-in reduced the deficit with five minutes left, fellow substitute Goncalo Ramos forced spot-kicks with a header in the fourth minute of stoppage time after a 2-2 draw. Tottenham boss Thomas Frank passes the trophy during the medal ceremony (Antonio Calanni/AP) Vitinha's miss coupled with successful kicks by Dominic Solanke and Rodrigo Bentancur put Thomas Frank's team two up in the shootout, but Van de Ven and Mathys Tel failed to score from the spot and the French side claimed further silverware with a 4-3 victory. Palhinha was eager to draw on the positives ahead of Tottenham being set to return to Champions League action next month for the first time in three seasons. 'It is football. At the end we are really sad. Not just the players but all the staff, all the crowd that came to support us during the game,' Palhinha said. 'I think we also need to feel proud for what we did until the 80 minutes. You know because we fought all the games with a top team and I think we showed what we are here to get in the future. 'We have all the conditions to achieve good things this season and I think the future will bring us something special. 'I think we have the hunger from all the players to achieve this title. Everyone gave all the maximum in this game and I think we showed what we are capable of. 'We played against a top team and I think we have everything, a top coach, top players in this squad, a top crowd with a lot of hunger to achieve titles and me and my team-mates will fight for it, for sure. We have all the conditions to achieve good things this season and I think the future will bring us something special 'A tough night, but I know that we will shape good things in the future. We just need to keep our head up.' This was Palhinha's competitive debut for Spurs after he joined on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich. Palhinha struggled during his debut campaign in Munich, but is excited to be back in the Premier League and London following two successful years at Fulham before Tottenham's opener at home to Burnley on Saturday. He said: 'In the Premier League you have also every single week top games. I think we cannot relax and the good thing now is we have another game on Saturday to change the (bad) things and start with the right foot in the Premier League. 'I enjoyed when I played in Fulham the two years that I was there. I really miss the Premier League. I think it's a league that everyone plays and when you play there and go to play outside somewhere else, you miss something. 'I'm really proud to be back again to the Premier League. I'm really happy to be in this top club and top team. I just need to enjoy it.' Proud. There's plenty more to come 🤍 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 13, 2025 Mohammed Kudus also made his debut for Tottenham and backed them to learn lessons from the defeat. 'We've shown that we can compete at the highest level, we have to take the positives and focus on the tasks we have ahead in the coming season,' Kudus insisted. 'This is a good step, of course a big disappointment but we have a lot more to play this season, a lot more competitions and we take this as a lesson and move forward.'
