Northern Irish rioters attack police for second night
BALLYMENA, Northern Ireland, June 10 (Reuters) - Rioters threw petrol bombs and other missiles at police in the Northern Irish town of Ballymena in the second successive night of disorder that followed a protest over an alleged sexual assault in the town, police and local media said on Tuesday.
Police said they were dealing with "serious disorder" in a part of the town, which is about 45 km (30 miles) from the capital Belfast, and urged people to avoid the area.
Officers responded by using water cannon against the rioters, a video posted on social media by a journalist from the Belfast Telegraph showed. Separate protests also blocked off some roads in Belfast, a Reuters witness said.
Fifteen police officers were injured, with some requiring hospital treatment, after they came under sustained attack for a number of hours on Monday when masked people broke from the protest to build barricades and attack properties.
Four houses were damaged by fire and windows and doors were smashed in other homes and businesses, in what police said they are investigating as racially-motivated hate attacks.
Hundreds of protesters gathered in Ballymena on Monday in response to a case involving two teenage boys who appeared in court earlier in the day, accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl in the County Antrim town.
Local media reported that the charges were read to the teenagers via an interpreter.

An 18-year-old man, and two boys aged 15 and 17, are expected to appear before Ballymena Magistrates' Court today. The 15-year-old has also been charged with criminal damage. He added: "It has now been confirmed to us by the PSNI and council that all these individuals are in the care of the Housing Executive and have been moved out of Larne. "Protesting is of course a legitimate right, but violence is not and I would encourage everyone to remain peaceful." 2:46 Some politicians have said Mr Lyons should be considering his position, while Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn said it was not helpful to publicise where people had been moved. Asked if he should still be in his job, he told the BBC Good Morning Ulster programme: "Absolutely." He insisted the information was already in the "public domain". Mid and East Antrim Borough Council said the leisure centre had been designated as an emergency rest centre, but the families had been safely relocated elsewhere.

Chilling CCTV images show pensioner Fredi Rivero before he was fatally attacked in the Islington area of north London at around 11.35pm on February 27. The girls - aged 14, 16 and 17, who cannot be named for legal reasons- previously appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court charged with manslaughter. The court was told that the victim, thought to be a Bolivian national, was near a bus stop on Seven Sisters Road, or the A503, when he was assaulted.
