'I'm fussy with face SPF and my new factor 50 daily essential is now 20% off'
It's a tale as old as time and a sentence that's often repeated in the beauty world - wearing SPF every day is a must. Yes, even on cloudy days. Those who haven't heard it enough, this is because the sun emits harmful UV rays that can damage skin, in turn leading to premature ageing, such as fine lines and wrinkles.
But, finding said SPF is quite the task, as there are a fair few boxes to tick if it's going to be a product effective and comfortable enough to be worn on the daily. My top three priorities when it comes to an SPF is that it must feel weightless, be able to be worn comfortably under makeup, and not irritate or cause redness.
Just like finding a favourite mascara, as a beauty writer, I've tried and tested many facial SPF products over the years, with some finding their way into my regime and others not making the cut. Premium skincare and wellness brand ESPA's Protect & Brighten Daily Skin Shield SPF 50 is my latest go-to - and it's now on sale at LookFantastic for £40 thanks to 20% off.
How does the ESPA Skin Shield work?
Every time we step outside, come rain or shine, our skin is exposed to UVA/UVB (ultraviolet radiation) from the sun, and pollution. Not wearing SPF protection leaves skin vunerable to the damaging effects these rays can have - which is where the ESPA Daily Skin Shield comes in.
ESPA's Protect & Brighten Daily Skin Shield SPF 50 is formulated with UVA/UVB filters, offering broad daily sunscreen protection against harmful rays. It also boasts a number of other skin-loving ingredients, working in union to defend, protect and nourish.

Product Description
One of these ingredients is Arabian Cotton, an antioxidant that protects against sun damage. Marine Exopolysaccharide stimulates epidermal renewal, for smoother skin, Beta-Carotene (derived from Marine Bamboo) defends against free radicals and Chinese Butterfly Blush protects against visible signs of ageing.
As well as working to protect the skin from the sun, the daily skin shield utilises Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate and Marine Algae Blend helping the skin appear brighter and more toned.
How do you use ESPA Skin Shield?
No one wants to slather sun cream on their face every morning, especially when the sun isn't even shining, so a lightweight formula that gives the same protection is essential. A skincare and SPF hybrid, ESPA's Daily Skin Shield has a silky, almost milky texture, more of a serum than a cream.
To apply the product to your face and neck, a pointed applicator allows you to apply as much as needed, before gently rubbing it in until absorbed. ESPA recommend 'applying generously' in the morning, and note that it can be used over moisturiser or under makeup.
ESPA's Protect & Brighten Daily Skin Shield SPF 50: My verdict
Texture is a deal-breaker for me when it comes to a facial sunscreen as in my opinion, I don't want anything that feels sticky, greasy or heavy. ESPA's Protect & Brighten Daily Skin Shield SPF 50 was even better than lightweight - it was completely invisible on the skin.
While the product doesn't claim to be a moisturiser, it still managed to leave my complexion with hydrating radiance, but I didn't feel as if any product was lying on my skin surface and causing irritation. I tend to have redness in my cheeks and the Daily Shield didn't inflame this or cause any breakouts.
I tried wearing the SPF over moisturiser and under makeup - both ways worked well for me. The product doesn't leave a white cast and it didn't cause my makeup to shift throughout the day - a problem I've found with some SPF face products.
Another big bonus in my opinion is the SPF feels very luxurious when applying. It has a spa-like almost citrusy scent to it, making it a pleasant experience to apply every morning. It feels bouncy on the skin, however, I haven't noticed any 'toning' effect yet.
The price point is on the higher end of the spectrum, with a 50ml bottle costing £50 at full price, but shoppers can currently nab it for £40 in a 20% off sale at LookFantastic. As this is a product to be used daily, there are cheaper alternatives out there.
Pros
Lightweight and invisible
Smells and feels luxurious
Can be worn under makeup
High SPF rating
Cons
Garnier's Vitamin C Daily UV Fluid SPF50+ Invisible is another SPF that I keep in my arsenal. A 40ml bottle is £12.99 at Boots and there's a tinted version - an option that the ESPA Daily Shield could benefit from. I do find it heavier on the skin than ESPA, but it is a quarter of the price.
I'm also a fan of the Glossier Invisible Shield Priming SPF 50. A 50ml bottle is £32 and it is specifically designed to prime the skin for makeup application making it a good choice for those days. Ideal for anyone with oilier skin, it provides a matte rather than a dewy finish.
Ultimately, the price tag of the ESPA Protect & Brighten Daily Skin Shield SPF 50 doesn't put me off as finding a daily SPF that works for you isn't an easy thing. Now on sale for £40, it's a great time to take advantage of the deal and stock up, or test it out.
The fact I don't even know I'm wearing it post-application is enough to have me reaching for it every morning. Plus, feeling as if I'm giving myself a mini-spa experience is a great way to start my day and encourages me to remember to wear SPF daily.

Gut health expert creates new capsule that stops 'worrying about the toilet'
Shoppers can grab the Gut Wealth 12-week programme for £99 from the website Those who suffer from gut problems and digestive distress - of which there are over 6.5 million people in the UK - will know the discomfort, worry and stress it can cause. However, there is a product that IBS sufferers are calling 'life changing', saying it allows them 'finally trust' their gut again. There are many tips and tricks out there that purport to help, but taking the time to try them all can leave people feeling more exhausted and helpless than ever if they don't work. Now, however, there may be a solution with the brand Gut Wealth and their 12-week programme, which is now £99 down from £120 with free UK postage - working out at less than £1.20 a day. The Gut Wealth capsules were created by gut health expert Gemma Stuart after she spent several years experiencing digestive discomfort first hand. Stuart then collaborated with scientists to develop a formula that works for the gut. Each capsule is formulated from 12 ingredients to support gut immunity, improve regularity and reduce bloating easily. In there are B Vitamins such as B1 Thiamine which supports normal energy metabolism, B3 Niacin which helps maintain normal mucous membranes which is relevant for gut lining + Vitamin D3 Vita Algae which supports the normal function of the gut barrier and Inulin (from chicory root) which is a source of prebiotic fibre shown to feed beneficial gut bacteria, among several others. After using the products from Gut Wealth, which is the winner of MedTech & HealthTech of the Year 2024, one study showed 82% of IBS sufferers experienced less bloating and 81% saw improvements in stool consistency. When using the capsules, it is advised that one is taken per day with water for 12 weeks, as according to the British Society of Gastroenterology, biotic-based supplements should be taken consistently for this length of time to allow the gut microbiome and lining time to respond properly. The 12 week programme is available on Gut Wealth and has free UK delivery £120 £99 Gut Wealth Buy here Product Description If this isn't the brand for everyone, there are other products for gut health to choose from such as Boots Good Gut Live Friendly Bacteria Max Strength - 14 Capsules for £17.85 which are designed to give a helping hand to create a healthy gut environment and are suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and over. Another is Myvitamins Gut Health Capsules from Lookfantastic for £18.99 giving shoppers 90 capsules and featuring a tri-biotic formula that helps to support gut health. Since trying the capsules, I can safely leave the house with no concerns.' Another wrote: "I've been on a trial with these capsules. I didn't expect them to help but they really have. Less noises from my digestion, but also feel more relaxed.' "I was sceptical, but these have changed everything. I've had less bloating, more energy, and no 'uh oh' moments," said another. Some others disagreed and shared opposing views, as one said: "Helped with bowel issues but I just don't like the taste." Another added: "I can finally go about my day without worrying where the nearest toilet is. Life-changing." The 12 week programme is available from Gut Wealth.

Medik8 fans say 'magical' anti-ageing eye cream makes dark circles 'disappear'
'My lines are very faint and my skin is glowing. I just turned 50 but I reckon I look the best I ever have.' Medik8 has launched an impressive sale on their 'greatest' skincare hits including the Crystal Retinal Eye Ceramide. The 'magical' serum would usually start at £42 but has dropped down to £33.60. It uses twin-encapsulated retinaldehyde which has been proven to work up to 11 times faster than standard retinol, this targets the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, discolouration, uneven skin texture and firmness. It also contains ceramides for the skin barrier, hyaluronic acid filling spheres for hydration and chamomile extract to soothe skin. While retinol and retinal have been known to be harsher on skin than some other ingredients, it is showing up in a number of eye products. The INKEY List Retinol Eye Cream is currently £13 at SpaceNK and LookFantastic is selling Beauty of Joseon Revive Eye Serum Ginseng + Retinal for £15, both are popular although neither have as many reviews as Medik8's hit. The Medik8 serum has pulled in an impressive average rating of 4.8 out of five from over 1,700 reviews. One happy shopper wrote: "I used to have dark circles under my eyes and let me tell you that after I started using Crystal Retinal Eye Ceramide they disappeared! This is a magical serum!" Another was thrilled by the impact on her skin, saying: "Oh my word. This has dethroned R-Retinoate as my favourite product ever. It is beautiful. I dot it under my eyes and on my crows feet and I can truthfully say that it instantly makes a difference which only gets better over time. The combined effect of using this with the oxy-r peptides has made the greatest difference to my skin out of all the products I've ever used and I'm ancient. I say 'greatest' because the results are clear to see over such a short period of time and I have supersensitive skin which hasn't been irritated in the slightest. "I feel like I'm gushing a little too much now but for a person who has suffered with eczema for 50 years and who was desperate to rescue his face after a particularly bad episode these products have wowed me. My lines are very faint and my skin is glowing. I just turned 50 but I reckon I look the best I ever have and I genuinely put that down to oxy-r peptides and the crystal retinal ceramide eye 6. It's certainly not down to clean living." Some shoppers have been underwhelmed by the speed it takes to start showing an impact, with one writing: "I have been using strength 6 around my eyes and the crystal retinal 6 for the face on rest of face. I think too early to say if it would be making any difference to eye creases, but I had hoped after a few weeks my dark circles would be lighter." While another claims to have seen a difference within 24 hours, adding: "So much change, just overnight. This product is so amazing, just overnight it firmed and plumped my eyes. It also helped with my wrinkles, this is a really amazing product!"
