Total eradication of terrorism is our top priority: LG Sinha
Jammu, June 16 (UNI) Asserting that he is proud of valiant personnel and officers of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday said that a complete eradication of terrorism from the soil of Jammu and Kashmir is the top priority of his administration.
"I am proud of our valiant personnel and officers of JKP. The entire nation looks at our police force with admiration and respect for professional competence, for successful handling of security challenges on multiple fronts and for ruthlessly combating terrorism," Sinha said.
The Lieutenant Governor was speaking at the passing-out parade of the Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySsP) and Probationer Sub-Inspectors (PSIs) at Sher-e-Kashmir Police Academy at Udhampur.
"The skilful and synchronised parade heralds a new dawn in the lives of 49 DySsP and 1,112 PSIs, and I call upon them to uphold the values, traditions and ethos of J&K Police," he said.
Sinha said, "Complete eradication of terrorism from the soil of Jammu and Kashmir is our top priority. Our mighty warriors of JKP must adopt a multi-pronged approach and harness the power of intelligence, community engagement, technology, and inter-agency collaboration."
"Our ancient values focus on truth, justice, morality, law and good governance and need to be protected and nurtured in the society by J&K Police," the Lieutenant Governor said.
He said the brave personnel must protect the society in every possible way to ensure peace, development and stability.

Chennai: In an unprecedented development, HM Jayaram, an Additional Director General of Police, was arrested in Tamil Nadu after the Madras High Court ordered investigators to do so in connection with an alleged kidnapping case involving a family dispute over a love marriage. The court also directed Poovai Jagan Moorthy, MLA and Chief of the Puratchi Bharatham party, to appear before the police for investigation. The judge, while hearing the MLA's anticipatory bail plea, made scathing observations, stating, "Why are you afraid of a police investigation? An MLA must be a role model and not run kangaroo courts." The judge also warned that Jagan Moorthy must appear without being accompanied by party cadre, asserting that political office bearers should not misuse their influence to evade the law. The court took note of police submissions that the MLA's supporters had blocked law enforcers from arresting him over the weekend in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district. While his anticipatory bail plea remains pending, the court indicated it would assess his cooperation with the ongoing investigation before deciding. According to police, the case centres around a marriage between a 22-year-old man and a young woman whose father, Vanaraja, disapproved of the union. Determined to break the marriage, Vanaraja allegedly approached Maheswari, a former police constable who had been dismissed from service. Maheswari, in turn, reportedly reached out to ADGP Jayaram, who then sought help from MLA Jagan Moorthy. Failing to locate the groom, the MLA's men allegedly abducted his 16-year-old younger brother instead. When the boy's mother approached the police, the minor was eventually released - but in a shocking twist, police say he was let go in a car belonging to ADGP Jayaram. The vehicle was reportedly driven by a serving constable, with Maheswari and Vanaraja being the other occupants. Investigators allege that huge financial transactions were made in connection with the kidnapping. Mr Moorthy, who had contested on an AIADMK symbol and won the Kilvaithinakuppam reserved constituency in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, had denied allegations.

India, Cyprus call for concerted action against cross-border terrorism
Nicosia (Cyprus), June 16 (UNI) India and Cyprus on Monday called for disruption of terrorism financing networks, elimination of safe havens, dismantling of terrorist infrastructure and bringing perpetrators of terrorism to justice swiftly while Cyprus strongly condemned the gruesome killing of civilians by terrorists in Pahalgam. The two countries emphasised the need for a comprehensive, coordinated and sustained approach to combatting cross-border terrorism and underscored the importance of working collaboratively, bilaterally and with the multilateral system to eliminate the scourge. In a joint declaration issued after talks between Prime Minister Narendera Modi and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides here, the two countries reiterated zero-tolerance approach to terrorism, rejecting any justification for such acts under any circumstances. They emphasized that those responsible for the attacks should be held accountable while Cyprus expressed solidarity and unwavering support to India in its fight against cross-border terrorism. Prime Minister Modi is currently visiting Cyprus as part of his three-nation tour, primarily to attend the 51st G-7 Summit in Canada. The two leaders urged all States to respect the sovereignty of other nations and condemned cross-border terrorism in all its forms. They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening multilateral efforts to combat terrorism and called for the expeditious finalization and adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism within the UN framework. They called for concerted actions against all UN and EU-designated terrorists and terrorist entities, associated proxy groups, facilitators and sponsors, including terrorists under 1267 UNSC Sanctions Committee. They unequivocally condemned terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms and manifestations, including international and cross-border terrorism and reaffirmed their shared commitment to countering hybrid threats that undermine peace and stability. They reiterated their strong commitment to continue taking active measures to disrupt terrorist financing channels including through the UN and Financial Action Task Force (FATF). Both leaders discussed the need for reform of the United Nations Security Council, including ways to make it more effective, efficient, and representative of the contemporary geopolitical challenges. The two leaders expressed support to forward movement in the Intergovernmental Negotiations on United Nations Security Council reform, and reiterated their commitment to make continuous efforts to move towards text-based negotiations. Cyprus reiterated its support for the enhancement of the representative character of the United Nations Security Council expansion with India as a permanent member in an expanded United Nations Security Council. They also agreed to engage in close cooperation and support each other at the United Nations including supporting each other's candidacies to multilateral forums. Acknowledging emerging challenges within the international security environment, the leaders stressed the importance of enhancing strategic autonomy, defence readiness and defence capabilities. They agreed to deepen their defence and security cooperation, including through collaboration between their respective defence industries, with a special focus on cybersecurity and emerging technologies. Recognizing both India and Cyprus as maritime nations with deep-rooted naval traditions, the two leaders discussed expanding cooperation to include the maritime domain and encourage more regular port calls by Indian naval vessels exploring opportunities for joint maritime training and exercises to enhance maritime domain awareness and regional security. In that vein, and in light of ongoing global crises, both sides committed to strengthening cooperation in emergency preparedness and coordinated crisis response. Drawing on past successful efforts, the leaders agreed to institutionalize coordination in evacuation and Search and Rescue (SAR) operations. Earlier the President of Cyprus warmly welcomed the Prime Minister Modi. Prime Minister Modi's visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades, marks a historic milestone and reaffirms the deep and enduring friendship between the two nations. The visit celebrates not only a shared history, but a forward-looking partnership, rooted in a joint strategic vision and mutual trust and respect. The two leaders held wide-ranging discussions on bilateral, regional, and global issues, underscoring the growing breadth and depth of cooperation between Cyprus and India. Book highlighting contrast between public & private sector banks in NPA levels released in New Delhi
New Delhi, June 16 (UNI) A book highlighting internal shortcomings of public and private sector banks and stark contrast between them in terms of NPA (non-performing assets) levels was released here on Monday. The book, 'NPA Management in Public & Private Sector Banks in INDIA-Causes and Remedies', written by Dr. Amarjit Chopra, former President ICAI, was released at a function organised by the Bhartiya Vitta Salahakar Samiti. The author has pointed out in the book that internal shortcomings like poor credit appraisal, weak underwriting standards and ineffective credit monitoring, evergreening of loans and the external factors like corruption, political interference and frequent policy changes significantly contribute to the problem of NPA in banks. The author has also hinted at possible future areas of research in the area of banking, particularly relating to revival of various units after introduction of IBC (Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code). Renowned economists Dr Ashwani Mahajan, National Co-convener, Swadeshi Jagran Manch, and Prof Ram Singh, Director Delhi School of Economics and Member MPC of RBI, were the chief guests at the function.
