Euro 2025: Germany beats France in shootout despite early red card
Forced to play 10-vs.-11 for most of the match due to an early red card, the Germans beat France in a shootout to advance out of the quarterfinals. It was the first time in tournament history a team won a game after falling behind with 10 players.
Their reward is a matchup with Spain on Wednesday. England faces Italy in the other semifinal on Tuesday, after a dramatic win of its own.
Germany is easily the most successful team in the Women's Euro history with seven titles plus an eighth as West Germany, though they've fallen short in the last two tournaments after winning six straight.
They appeared doomed to a second quarterfinal loss in three tournaments when defender Kathrin Hendrich was called for a red card on a truly pointless hair pull during a free kick. The foul was caught by VAR and confirmed in the 13th minute.
Not only was Germany relegated to 10 players on the field, France was also given a penalty that Grace Geyoro converted to take a 1-0 lead.
No team had ever won a Euro match from the position Germany found itself in, but it scored the equalizer 10 minutes later on a corner kick via a header from Sjoeke Nüsken.
Both teams had the opportunity to break the 1-1 tie from there. France appeared to score the go-ahead goal in the 40th minute, but was called offsides. Germany got a penalty kick in the 68th minute, but France stopped it.
The game went to extra time, then shootouts after a scoreless half-hour. Both teams missed only one of their first six shots, until Janina Minge scored on the seventh shot and Ann-Katrin Berger stopped Amel Majri's do-or-die shot.
Spain, the only team in the field ranked higher by FIFA than Germany, now awaits, but it's going to be hard to argue Germany didn't survive a harder challenge Saturday.

Tyreek Hill: Tua Tagovailoa's comments were needed
Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has made some pointed comments at training camp about needing to hold wide receiver Tyreek Hill accountable, and Hill says he accepts those comments. Hill said today that he's trying to hold himself accountable as well and appreciates Tagovailoa's leadership. "I think Tua's comments were needed," Hill said. "He's obviously the leader of our team so he sets the standard, so I'm just trying to be the best teammate, best version of myself I can be. Showing up to meetings, coming out here every day and busting my tail in practice, I think it's important. If you want to be able to leave a legacy, you've got to be able to consistently do those things." Hill said he knows he needs to be a good presence in the locker room and on the practice field, and not just a playmaker on game days. "I think it's very important because football is a team sport," Hill said. "It is important." Getting Tagovailoa and Hill on the same page will go a long way toward getting things moving in the right direction for the Dolphins this season.

Wrexham signs former England defender Conor Coady from Leicester
WREXHAM, Wales (AP) — Wrexham signed defender Conor Coady from Leicester as it reshapes its squad to cope with promotion to the second-tier Championship. Coady brings 198 games' worth of Premier League experience and 10 appearances for the English national team. He was part of England's squad at the last World Cup in 2022 but didn't play. 'I'm over the moon. It's a special day, I'll be honest," the 32-year-old defender said in a club statement. 'We've all seen what the club has done over the past few years and for me to join is really special and I can't wait to meet the boys and get started.' Coady arrives for an undisclosed fee from Leicester, one of Wrexham's opponents in the Championship in the upcoming season. He signed a two-year contract with an option for a further year. The club made internationally famous by its celebrity owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and the 'Welcome to Wrexham" documentary series is doing things differently after returning to the second tier for the first time since the 1980s. As well as staging a preseason tour of Australia and New Zealand, Wrexham has parted company with the experienced Paul Mullin and Steven Fletcher, and signed players like United States international Damion Downs. Wrexham's Championship campaign begins at Southampton on Aug. 9. ___ AP soccer:
