Danville Lions hear from veteran broadcaster, reporter
Veteran broadcaster, reporter and investigator Bill Pickett shared about his 55 years of television and radio reporting at a recent Danville Lions meeting.
Having retired five years ago, Pickett is now employed with the Vermilion County Museum, after having volunteered there upon his retirement. Among other duties, he largely works on special projects with 15,000 donated small Match Box cars and over 10,000 donated sports cards. He is also involved in the 200th anniversary celebration of Vermilion County by gathering information from books for his short stories about all of the towns in the county.
Pickett is writing a book of memoirs of his life experience in Vermilion County with the tentative title: 'Behind The Mic – For Over 50 Years.' He believes that God has a plan for each of us and he was open to finding his calling. During his time at the then Danville Junior College, he met and became friends with John Edwards. He and some other friends would go to WITY Radio to help John with his 'All Requests Weekend' shows by answering the phones and digging out records from the station's record library for John to play. Pickett began a journey of microphone experiences which then grew for decades.
On a personal note, Pickett met his wife Cheryl on a blind date, and the weekend after she graduated from Westville High School, they were married. He noted sadly her passing in February 2020.
Pickett always enjoyed doing the news, and noted a particular event on Sept. 20, 1968, when he helped News Director Doug Jackson broadcast a DHS football game the night when there was a devastating blast at Lauhoff. He believed he entered the news profession literally 'Baptized by fire.'
Between WITY, WDAN-WDNL, WRHK Radio, and WCIA TV, he has decades of stories to share of working with eight mayors; getting to witness Joe Tanner's first launch into space; covering news with Vicki Haugen and DACC and the founders of the Economic Development Corporation; covering news of the Vermilion County Board; the hometown stars Dick and Jerry Van Dyke, Bobby Short, Gene Hackman, Donald O'Connor, and others who raised funds for the rebirth of the Fischer Theater; a horrific blizzard in in 1978; the 2006 birth of the famous Pete and Jenny Ferrill quintuplets, and more.

Days of our Lives Moments to Watch June 2-6
One Salem loss will be another Salem gain this week on Days of our Lives. Here are three major moments to watch out for this week. After a long, hard fight, on Tuesday, Salem will grieve the loss of another legend: Drake Hogestyn's John Black. So many loved ones have returned home in the wake of John's battle; Will (Chandler Massey), Carrie (Christie Clark), Eric (Greg Vaughan), Paul (Christopher Sean), and Andrew (Colton Little). Brady (Eric Martsolf) and Belle (Martha Madison) will mourn the death of their dad, but the person most affected will be Marlena (Deidre Hall), who has stuck by her husband's side through it all. READ THIS: Here's why Will is the perfect person for Johnny (Carson Boatman) to confide in on DAYS. Mid-week, amidst the bittersweet news about both John and Bo (Peter Reckell), Jack (Matthew Ashford) and Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) will come home to Salem. The couple hasn't been back since last Thanksgiving when Salem said goodbye to Doug (the late Bill Hayes), and now they'll return to comfort another grieving widow. The two will also most likely reunite with JJ (Casey Moss), who's been on the rocks with Gabi (Cherie Jimenez), and catch up with Chad (Billy Flynn), whose friendship with Cat (AnnaLynne McCord) is one Jennifer will never accept. READ THIS: Johnny and Rachel (Alice Halsey) struggle as Kristen (Stacy Haiduk) makes a deal with EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) on the May 30 DAYS. Not having his dad there on his wedding day wasn't something Paul ever imagined, but now, it's the heartbreaking reality as he and Andrew decide to go through with their Salem wedding. The decision will be made mid-week, and may just be the perfect pick-me-up for the grieving Salemites.

Days of our Lives Spoilers June 4: A Miracle Manifests
Days of our Lives spoilers for Wednesday, June 4, celebrate Bo's return to his family, while Marlena continues trying to process losing John for good. Paul and Andrew's news may help. Hope (Kristian Alfonso) called Shawn (Brandon Beemer) and Ciara (Victoria Konefal) to Bo's (Peter Reckell) bedside because she assumed this was the end. Shawn wasn't quite ready to say goodbye to his dad quite yet (and not only because he still felt guilty for shooting him), so he broke into a Salem University Hospital lab with Steve (Stephen Nichols) and John (Drake Hogysten) and stole a medication that might save Bo's life. And it did. Now, Hope, Shawn, Ciara, and the rest of the Hortons and Bradys have something to celebrate. Even as they also mourn. MORE: This DAYS star's transformation is unbelievable! John was the one who made it possible for Bo to get the drug that saved his life, but he ended up giving his life in return. Marlena (Deidre Hall) keeps trying to stay strong for her family, dismissing her earlier breakdown and pressing on. All of Salem rallies around her, but they know that, in the end, there is little they can do. Time will just have to take its course. Maybe this will help: Paul (Sean Christopher) and Andrew (Colton Little) are getting married! This has been a long time coming. They kept getting distracted by ISA missions with John and Marlena — and, presumably, other people, too. It was just never the right time. Now seems like an excellent time. John would have celebrated their marriage. It's what he would have wanted. Maybe Paul's mother will even return. We've been ignoring her lately. He does have one. And Marlena has no problems with her. Heck, they both loved John. She can be supportive, too.

Greg Vaughan Gets Candid About Drake Hogestyn's Emotional DAYS Sendoff
Nary a dry eye was found across Days of Our Lives fandom as viewers watched John Black take his last breath. Before Drake Hogestyn died in September 2024, he approved the storyline that would become John's final sendoff. Many characters whose lives were connected to John returned to pay their respects and give him the hero's exit that he deserved. Among them was Greg Vaughan's Eric Brady, and the actor discussed his thoughts on John's last story. Vaughan spoke with TV Insider and explained that, 'There's not enough time in the day to tell you all the great things about Drake Hogestyn.' He praised his erstwhile co-star for putting his family first when he wasn't at work, and then giving the show 100% of his energy and attitude. 'I cherish the conversations and the stories we had,' he remarked, adding that they were in constant communication until Hogestyn's end. The actor further noted that participating in John's final scenes was not something that they were running to work over, as it was a very somber occasion. He felt the day of shooting was extremely difficult for cast and crew alike, especially as many struggled to work on those scenes. And while he thought Eric's return for the story was a nice gesture, he stated, 'I wish it was under better circumstances.' READ THIS: Catch a glimpse of what's coming up next on DAYS. Despite the difficult time everyone had getting through the scenes, Vaughan praised Hogestyn's family for their support. 'Drake's family, his wife, approved of this story, so I thought that was really just a wonderful gesture, and the way they wrote it was a nice touch.' Because Hogestyn was also a father figure to him, Vaughan explained that the actor always had wisdom and advice to impart upon him. He felt blessed that Hogestyn had been in his life, and he appreciated how his friend always asked how Vaughan's kids were doing. 'He is dearly missed and very loved, and his memory will forever be cherished and remembered.'
