Statewide tahlil, prayers for Zara

Kota Kinabalu: All mosques and suraus in Sabah will hold tahlil and prayer sessions for the well-being of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, who is also the state exco for education and religion, on Sunday. He, on Friday (Aug 8), had directed the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains) to coordinate the sessions.
Advertisement The state government will also host a state-level tahlil and prayer session this Thursday (Aug 14) after Maghrib prayers at the City Mosque. The event will be led by the State Mufti and held simultaneously across all mosques and suraus in Sabah. He said the incident not only caused grief to her family in Sipitang but also sparked concern nationwide, raising serious questions about student safety in educational institutions. 'If bullying was indeed involved, this is no longer a matter of discipline but violence that claimed a life,' he said. This is the second time Matbali has brought up the matter, having raised it during the debate on the Education (Amendment) Bill 2025 on July 30. He urged the Government to act proactively, saying it was time to introduce specific anti-bullying legislation with clear guidelines, protection for victims and whistleblowers, and firm action against offenders. Shocking for incident to happen in religious school

Kota Kinabalu: Sipitang Bersatu Srikandi Chief Dayang Nor Syafiqah Abdul Hamid said the death of 13-year-old student Zara Qairina Mahathir exposes critical failures in student protection systems. She said parents entrust schools with their children's education and character development, not to expose them to bullying, torture or fatal harm. She expressed dismay that the alleged bullying occurred within a religious institution meant to uphold the highest moral standards. 'No parent should ever have to bury their child and be left wondering if more could have been done to protect them,' she said, characterising the incident as part of a systemic breakdown rather than an isolated tragedy. She called for immediate action from the Ministry and Sabah Education Department, calling for mandatory CCTV installation in school hostels, elimination of institutional barriers to police reporting and establishment of a dedicated Student Protection and Bullying Response Unit under the State Education Department. Additional proposed measures include automatic post-mortem examinations and legal inquests for all unnatural student deaths, expanded mental health support services, prominently displayed student rights documentation and creation of an independent review panel to investigate serious incidents publicly. Syafiqah also advocated for a Parental Rights Charter that would guarantee full access to incident records and remove obstacles to filing police reports. She noted that the Attorney-General's Chambers has already identified significant investigative gaps in Zara's case, noting that delayed reporting compromises evidence and undermines justice. 'Every hour lost in reporting weakens investigations, destroys evidence and denies justice. In Zara's case, the Attorney-General's Chambers has already flagged serious investigative gaps. This must never happen again,' she said. She urged leaders in the Sabah Government and across political lines to act decisively, without delay. 'This is bigger than politics. This is about our children's lives, safety and dignity. Zara deserved better. All our children do. ‘I don't have daughter named Dayana Balqis'

Kota Kinabalu: Darau Assemblyman Azhar bin Datuk Matussin lodged a report against social media claims linking his daughter to the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir. 'I do not have a daughter named Dayana Balqis, also known as Dedeng. Furthermore, I have never sent my daughter to study at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha. 'The birth certificate displayed in the post does not belong to my daughter. All the details are false. They were fabricated and can be verified at any National Registration Department branch,' he said in his Facebook page, Tuesday. The former State Assistant Minister of Trade and Industry lodged the report to call on the authorities to act against those responsible for creating and spreading the false claims, including individuals who shared the content on other online platforms. He also filed a Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) report the same day over the post, which appeared on the Facebook page under the name of 'Forum Politik Sabah Suara Anak Sabah, Ini Sabah Bah (ISB)'. He said legal advisers have recommended him to pursue the case in court. Although the post has since been deleted, Azhar said the damage had been done and stressed that the safety of his daughter was now at risk. 'We know that the majority of Malaysians are currently outraged at the bullies and killers involved in the case.' Meanwhile, a family member of a former SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha student also lodged a report in Lahad Datu on Aug 8 over defamatory claims linking their daughter to the case of Zara. Muhd Yassin said his 16-year-old daughter had already transferred to Kolej Vokasional Lahad Datu (KVLD) in early 2025. 'My daughter studied at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha in 2022 (Form 1) to 2024 (Form 3) and transferred to KVLD early this year. 'The incident involving Almarhumah Zara Qairina occurred when my daughter was no longer studied at the school. 'But her photo was shared in a video that was uploaded by an account on Tik Tok saying she was the murderer of Zara.
