Free ‘RELA' haircut service unlikely attraction at Perak PMR 2025

The Sun13-06-2025
LUMUT: The People's Volunteer Corps, more popularly known as RELA to Malaysians, are usually associated with keeping public order during major events, but this time at the Perak MADANI Rakyat Programme 2025, their free haircut service has taken centrestage and become a star attraction.
The free haircut service at the Home Ministry (KDN) booth in Lumut Waterfront here is being offered to the first 40 visitors daily throughout the three-day event, Perak Rela director Razib Buhaini said, adding that the department always prioritised service to the public, no matter what the situation.
'This way, RELA can deliver its service... with a bit of help from us, it might help reduce costs for families and those who have financial difficulty in getting a haircut,' he told Bernama today, adding that haircuts these days cost between RM10 to RM15 per head.
He noted that the quality was on par with what existing barbers offered as the RELA members giving the haircuts are skilled barbers themselves.
'Those providing the haircuts all have the necessary barber skills.... our service also depends on requests of styles, but if there are those asking for over extreme styles, we don't do it. At least we can keep your hair neat,' he said, pointing out that the haircuts were only for men.
A RELA member who was providing haircuts, Muhamad Zulhafiz Kamis, 34, said he signed up with RELA in 2016 with his barber skills.
He learned the craft by himself and now he was able to use it on a part time basis to help rural communities, especially those in his village in Beruas.
'My village is in a rural area, so barbers are quite far so I'm the one who provides the service,' he said, adding that he believed that RELA members needed to have a neat presentation to function as a bridge between the government and the public.
'It started out as my hobby when I joined RELA, we understand being presentable is important as we are an intermediary between the people and the government,' he said.
The Perak PMR 2025 is from 9 am to 10 pm on Friday and Saturday, and ends on 6 pm on Sunday. Government service booths operate from 9 am to 6 pm throughout the three-day event.

Absen A25 Series Brings 3D Panda to KL's Golden Triangle

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Media OutReach Newswire - 15 August 2025 – Absen has transformed the McDonald's intersection in Kuala Lumpur's Golden Triangle into a global digital landmark with its A25 series outdoor giant screen and a groundbreaking naked-eye 3D panda animation. The first project in Absen's Global 20 Super Landmark Cases Plan, it marks a milestone in company's 20-year global journey, merging cutting-edge display tech with creative storytelling to turn one of Asia's busiest hubs into an international destination for digital art and public engagement. Located near the Petronas Towers, the site draws over 500,000 pedestrians daily. To stand out, Absen partnered with a Spanish visual design team to create an immersive narrative: a giant panda peeks from behind curtain, slips while reaching for bamboo, floats in zero gravity, and is pulled into a swirling vortex—before 'I Love KL' appears and the panda lands playfully, sparking cheers and social sharing. Each scene breaks screen boundary, delivering powerful visual impact with strong viral potential. 'Malaysians have a natural affection for pandas,' said Sophia, Absen's Malaysia Outdoor Advertising Manager. 'This isn't just advertising—it's an urban-scale interactive experience that makes the screen part of city's collective memory.' Built for high-traffic, high-challenge urban environments, the A25 features IP66 full-sealing and a five-layer waterproof interface, ensuring reliability in high heat, humidity, and monsoon rains. Its advanced power-saving technology reduces energy consumption by over 50% compared to conventional displays, saving up to USD 200,000 in electricity over five years for a 300㎡ screen—dramatically lowering total cost of ownership. A client representative said: 'We chose Absen for efficiency, durability, and image quality. But more importantly, it helps us create something iconic—not just another ad. With 3D storytelling and custom pandas, we make it fun, not boring.' Since launching its first overseas screen in Saudi Arabia in 2005, Absen has deployed over 2 million displays worldwide. 'We make low power consumption a core focus of our R&D,' said Shaun, Absen VP & R&D Director. 'The A25 redefines the 'low-carbon landmark' — energy-smart, reliable, and city-activating. Backed by a 10-year warranty, it sets a new standard for outdoor displays.' As the first of 20 global landmarks, the Kuala Lumpur project embodies Absen's vision: where technology, creativity, and urban culture converge to shape future of public spaces.

Ex-foundation CEO learned of Najib's AmBank accounts from media reports

FORMER Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia (YR1M) CEO Ung Su Ling only learned from media reports that the AmBank accounts receiving RM42 million belonged to former Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak. As reported by an online portal today, Ung told the High Court that she was unaware that the funds came from SRC International Sdn Bhd when instructed by Najib's then principal private secretary the late Azlin Alias to transfer them via Ihsan Perdana Sdn Bhd (IPSB). The funds were deposited into two AmBank accounts ending in 880 and 906, between late 2014 and early 2015. Ung confirmed arranging three transfers from IPSB — RM27 million, RM5 million and RM10 million — but said she had no additional information about the money. 'At the material time, I was not aware of the source of these funds, nor was I informed of the same by Azlin. I can attest that these funds did not originate from nor belong to YR1M. 'However, based on subsequent media reports and the decision of the SRC International case, I understand that these funds, which were transferred to IPSB, originated from SRC,' she said during examination-in-chief. Ung acted on Azlin's instructions to transfer the funds to the specified bank accounts without knowing who owned them. She was testifying as the first witness for the plaintiffs in SRC International and its subsidiary Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd's lawsuit against Najib to recover RM42 million allegedly misappropriated from SRC International 's accounts. When asked about the link between YR1M and IPSB, Ung explained that YR1M supported IPSB financially through grants and funding for community programmes in line with the 1Malaysia initiative. During cross-examination by defence lawyer Farhan Shafee, she said she never felt it necessary to seek further details about the funds. In August 2022, Najib was found guilty on seven counts of abuse of power, money laundering, and criminal breach of trust involving SRC 1Malaysia's funds. His initial sentence of 12 years in prison and a RM210 million fine was later reduced to six years and RM50 million through a royal pardon. The hearing before Justice Raja Ahmad Mohzanuddin Shah Raja Mohzan is ongoing. — TMR

Curry Puffs And Dreams: Building An Accounting Firm From RM300 Beginnings

Subscribe to our FREE A yellowed employment letter tells the story of humble beginnings that many Malaysians can relate to. 35 years ago, a young man received his first salary as an Audit Assistant at a Kuala Lumpur accounting firm – RM280 plus RM20 Cost of Living Allowance (COLA), totalling RM300. That man, Koh Teck Peng, is now the founder and group principal of an accounting firm in Johor Bahru . How tough were those days? There was no bank transfer back then, Koh recalls. Every month, I'd walk to UMBC Bank – now RHB – queue up, and hand my paper cheque to the counter lady with a smile, saying this is my allowance.' The bank teller would stamp it, count out the cash, and hand it over. That was my monthly ritual. Life on RM300 a Month His daily routine was gruelling but purposeful: Daytime : Working hard at Evening: Rushing to Systematic College for Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) classes Night: Studying until late Weekends: Cramming at ACCA headquarters near his office, occasional movies at Bukit Bintang Meals: Dinner often just a roadside curry puff Commute: Squeezed into mini buses with drivers racing like F1 racers Daily Load: Carrying audit files in one hand, pirated Despite the tight budget, there was time for fun. Someone suggested we learn ballroom dancing – not K-pop or hip hop, but waltz, cha-cha, and twist. A bunch of accountants dancing was absolutely hilarious! What was RM300 worth in 1990? Not much, but enough, Koh says earnestly. Most importantly, a company was willing to hire him and give Koh a chance to prove himself. 35 Years Later Today He emphasises that the small UMBC bank check, though modest in amount, changed the trajectory of his life. His senior colleagues were patient, correcting his mistakes in ticking, vouching, and referencing without embarrassing him. Looking back 35 years later, he adds: 'If I could walk to that same bank counter today, I'd still say 'This is my allowance,' then add: 'It changed my life.'' After a year and a half in KL, Koh returned to Johor Bahru in 1992. His parting question: 'Guess what my next salary was?' READ MORE : Share your thoughts with us via TRP's .
