This milestone seamlessly connects the Kashmir rail network to the Indian Railways freight corridor, allowing goods from across the country to be transported directly into the Valley. Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project of a total length of 272 Km has been recently commissioned. USBRL project covers the districts of Udhampur, Reasi, Ramban, Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Budgam and Baramulla of Jammu and Kashmir. The USBRL project is one of the most difficult new railway line projects undertaken in the country post-independence. The terrain passes through the young Himalayas, which are full of geological surprises and numerous problems. In this project, the Railway has made the world's highest Railway Bridge over the Chenab River in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. The iconic Chenab Bridge is 1315 m long, having an arch span of 467 m and a height of 359 m above the river bed. Indian Railways' first cable-stayed bridge has been constructed over the Anji Khad in this project. Its bridge deck is 331m above the river bed level, and the height of its Main pylon is 193m. ICICI Bank minimum balance: Check penalty rates for non-compliance

ICICI Bank, India's second-largest private bank, has sharply increased the minimum monthly average balance (MAB) requirement for savings accounts opened in metro and urban areas from ₹10,000 to ₹50,000, effective August 1 2025, according to news agency ANI report. ICICI Bank has raised the minimum balance for savings accounts from August 2025. (REUTERS) The increase is significant across all areas. For semi-urban branches, the new MAB has risen to ₹25,000 from ₹5,000. For rural branches, the requirement has gone up to ₹10,000 from ₹2,500. Minimum balance rule and penalty charges at ICICI Bank The minimum monthly average balance is the least amount a customer must keep in his/her account each month. If the balance falls below this, banks charge a penalty. ICICI Bank says it will charge a penalty of 6% of the shortfall or ₹500, whichever is lower. ICICI Bank is the first to raise the MAB this steeply. However, these charges are waived if the customer meets the conditions of an enrolled programme. For Family Banking, the family must together keep 1.5 times the programme's eligibility amount. If not, members who don't meet their own MAB will be charged individually. Pensioners do not have to pay these charges. The bank will charge ₹500 per instance for ECS/NACH debit returns due to financial reasons, with a maximum of three charges per month for the same mandate. For outward cheque returns (cheques deposited by customers), a fee of ₹200 per instance will apply if returned for financial reasons. Inward cheque returns (cheques issued by customers) will incur ₹500 per instance for financial reasons and ₹50 for non-financial reasons, excluding signature verification. Several public sector banks waive minimum balance penalties Banks that have stopped charging these penalties this year include Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, Indian Bank, Bank of India, and Central Bank of India. State Bank of India, the country's largest lender, has not charged penalties for low balances since March 2020.

Industry body ISMA backs ethanol-blending programme, dismisses misinformation

New Delhi [India], August 9 (ANI): The Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) has strongly defended the country's ethanol-blending programme amid 'misleading' claims from some quarters about its impact on vehicle engines. In a statement, ISMA said the E20 fuel blend, 20 per cent ethanol mixed with petrol, has undergone rigorous testing by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and has been certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) as fully compatible with Indian vehicles. Automobile manufacturers are already producing E20-compliant models, the association noted. Referring to Brazil's decades-long use of ethanol blends from E20 to E100 without major issues, ISMA highlighted that the South American nation currently blends over 27 per cent ethanol in petrol and is targeting 30 per cent by 2030. "Ethanol-blended fuel is not just a technological choice--it is a national imperative. Backed by rigorous scientific validation and decades of global experience, it delivers clear benefits for our farmers, our economy, and our environment," ISMA Director General Deepak Ballani said in the statement. From an economic perspective, the ethanol blending programme has become a "game changer" for over five crore sugarcane farmers, with more than ₹ 1.18 lakh crore transferred to them. ISMA argued that the blending of ethanol with petrol improved the financial health of sugar mills, ensured timely payments to farmers, and helped manage excess sugar inventories, ultimately stabilising sugarcane prices and protecting farmer incomes. The E20 target is also expected to save ₹ 35,000-40,000 crore in foreign exchange annually by reducing crude oil imports, which account for over 85 per cent of India's consumption. "The recent negative campaign on social media against ethanol-blended fuels is not only misleading but also detrimental to a nationally important programme," the ISMA statement noted. Earlier this week, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas had also dismissed recent claims circulating on social media that E20 petrol causes a drastic drop in fuel efficiency, besides impacting the engines. The ministry clarified that while ethanol has a lower energy density than petrol, the impact on fuel efficiency is only marginal. In 2014, the ethanol blending was just 1.53 per cent. By 2022, India achieved 10 per cent blending, five months ahead of schedule. The original target of 20 per cent blending (E20) by 2030 was advanced to 2025 and has already been achieved in the current Ethanol Supply Year. (ANI)
