Ella Balinska shares how she nailed first takes for 'The Occupant'

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Snowy elements during the filming of The Occupant, in theaters and video-on-demand Friday, required star Ella Balinska to get many scenes right in just one take. The actress plays Abby, an engineering geologist who survives a helicopter crash.
In a recent Zoom interview with UPI, Balinska described filming on location in the Caucasus Mountains in the country of Georgia. The snow had to look like no one had been there before Abby, meaning the filmmakers could not remove footprints after the first take.
"When we're doing these massive shots, we had to get it right the first time," Balinska, 28, said. "Otherwise, we were limited to only doing closeups and it loses that vast scale."
Leaving the snow untouched also made it challenging for director Hugo Kejzer to set marks for the actress to hit during each take.
"If it was really specific, we'd get a rock and try and throw it as best as we could to the little area so it only made a tiny mark in the snow that you wouldn't see on a wide shot," she said. "It was like a ballet on the snow and on the side of the mountain."
Balinska said she, Kejzer, cinematographer Robbie van Brussell, drone operator Bram van Woudenberg and the crew on the mountain shared a shorthand to achieve those shots.
She appreciated the technical challenge, too, as Balinska calls herself a technical actor.
"Honestly, it just gets to a point where you kind of want to work a little bit smarter," she said. "If you don't need to repeat a shot, I would prefer not to, especially when it involves falling into the ice."
Balinska first read the Occupant script in 2019 and intended to follow up on her films Charlie's Angels and Run Sweetheart Run with the project. Delays, including the COVID-19 pandemic, postponed filming until 2022.
Now, the film comes after her role in the Netflix Resident Evil series and film Skincare. Ballinska said her workload served the role of Abby.
"By the time we got to shooting the project, I was like, I'm exhausted," she said. "Funnily enough, [it] psychologically put me in the right place for this character because the character's exhausted too. And I think it made it 10 times more real and truthful than it ever could have been if we shot it in 2019."
During her journey, Abby reaches John, another survivor, via radio and attempts to find him. Rob Delaney was cast as the voice of John after filming wrapped, meaning assistant director Toby Sherbourne read John's lines on set for timing.
Since Sherbourne was not an actor, Balinska imagined the performance the eventual actor on the other line would give.
"A lot of the time, I'd learn the entire scene myself," she said. "I'd imagine different deliveries of different lines that he had in relation to what Hugo wanted for the scene. It was just a lot of spinning plates in one go which is definitely tricky but we managed to get it done."
Other challenges included limited filming hours when the sun was in the right position above the mountains, staying hydrated and sun protection.
"Everyone forgets the snow is a massive reflector," Balinska said. "I had my feet wrapped in plastic bags and my feet taped so I wouldn't get my feet wet. Then we realized my feet were getting sweaty and damp so we'd have to change the plastic bag."
Balinska said she is drawn to physical roles like The Occupant, the action-packed Charlie's Angels, the horror pursuit of Run Sweetheart Run and zombies of Resident Evil.
"I think [it's] a really interesting challenge to be able to balance the emotional demands as well as physical demands," she said.
She also appreciated how The Occupant was a human survival tale, as opposed to playing a trained agent in Charlie's or backed by a team in Resident Evil. Abby was working in Georgia to pay for experimental cancer treatment for her sister and was flying home after her sister took a turn for the worse.
"It's not one of those projects where the main character is trying to save the world and they're trying to get through a situation with all these amazing weapons," she said. "No, it's literally just one person's very humble and quite quiet and painful drive to just get home."
The remote filming location meant there were no Hollywood comforts for the cast and crew in real life. The entire group stayed in a cabin in the Caucasus, and everyone chipped in behind the scenes.
"We found ourselves carrying film equipment up the side of the mountain just to be able to get the shot," she said. "We were all staying in a cabin getting the shot done. It was really remarkable."

Elizabeth Bowen: Liv, Mike are equal partners by 'Resident Alien' S4

Photo by James Dittiger/USA Network NEW YORK, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Fargo and Upload alum Elizabeth Bowen says the partnership her Resident Alien character, Deputy Liv, has with her boss, Sheriff Mike (Corey Reynolds), evolves quite a lot over the sci-fi-comedy's four seasons. "From the start until now is leaps and bounds different than what it began. There is so much more respect. It's so much more equal," Bowen told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. "We have such a greater understanding of what each character has been through in their past and what made them who they are. But, also, Corey and I have gone through life stuff. We went through the pandemic together," Bowen said. "We've gone through a strike together. We've gone through all the ups and downs of working on a show in uncertain times, so it's been really interesting watching our characters' journeys and our personal journeys grow side by side. It's been a wonderful experience." Known for his work in the police drama The Closer and the Broadway musical Hairspray, Reynolds noted that the Resident Alien stars and crew grew particularly close because the show started filming in 2020 when much of the world was still shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "We were in this testing bubble," he recalled. "Our cast and the other creatives were the only people that we knew we were 100 percent safe to be around because we were tested on a regular basis," Reynolds said. "We bonded a lot because we spent a lot of time together." The actor said everyone was "fully invested" when they arrived to work on the adaptation of a graphic novel series about a space alien (Alan Tudyk), who crash-lands in a small Colorado town filled with kind, quirky people. "Everyone came into this wanting to do it, which is, in and of itself, a victory," Reynolds said. "People don't always take jobs because they want to. They take them because they need them." As the actors were cast, series creator Chris Sheridan added everyone to an email thread, so they could learn about each other, Reynolds added. "He started a community online before we even got to meet one another, so by the time we finally did get to meet at the table-read, it was instant chemistry, creatively and professionally. We had kind of primed the pump," he said. The latest run of episodes started out with extraterrestrial Harry (Tudyk) imprisoned on the moon, emotional and without his super powers, while an evil creature called the Mantid impersonates him and takes over his life in the Rocky Mountains. By Season 4, most of the townspeople know that Harry is an alien, but Liv and Mike are among the last ones to discover his big secret. The Mantid kidnaps Liv, takes over her appearance and tries to kill everyone she cares about. After Harry vanquishes the Mantid, Mike leads a posse to rescue Liv, who seems to be cured of her obsession with space aliens, now that several have attempted to eat her. "She was 10 when she first saw a UFO. Her world, in that way, has always been a bit bigger than Mike's with regards to aliens and believing in things that you might not have ever seen," Bowen said. Faced with this new reality, Mike wonders what else he might have overlooked, Reynolds said. "When you're so certain about something and have to do a 180, I think any person with any self-reflective nature would have to reflect on, what else could I have gotten wrong?" Reynolds said. "That's one thing I will say that I'm kind of proud about bringing to life with Mike. He has a reluctance to be wrong and to acknowledge that he's wrong, but I think that once he gets there, he's genuinely regretful about not getting there sooner," he added. "He's been getting it wrong for a long time and, not just getting it wrong himself, but trying to convince someone -- Deputy Liv -- who's been getting it right that SHE'S been wrong, which is extra wrong." Mike gets a taste of his own medicine this season when he tries to tell his girlfriend, Detective Lena (Nicola Correia-Damude), that aliens have invaded his town. "He's now having firsthand experience at what Deputy Liv was experiencing when trying to get him to believe," Reynolds said. "He's now more understanding of what he put her through because of what he's dealing with trying to convince Lena," he added. "He's going to have to tell her something that is going to seem ridiculous to her. But, to be true to himself and to reality, he's got to find a way to do it and it's a tricky thing and it doesn't go well." The fourth and final season finale aired Friday on USA Network and Syfy.

Catherine Zeta-Jones 'Finally' Lets Out Real Accent in Candid Interview and Fans Are Stunned

Catherine Zeta-Jones 'Finally' Lets Out Real Accent in Candid Interview and Fans Are Stunned originally appeared on Parade. Actors and actresses have always needed the skill to adapt and alter their accents. In doing so convincingly, they open themselves up to many more opportunities. A lot of times non-American actors in combination with taking these roles as well as just living in the U.S., lose or "tamper down" their country of origin's accent. Still when their real accent peeks through, it's always a bit of a shock. Recently Netflix's Wednesday star Catherine Zeta-Jones gave a candid red carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight about her 25 year marriage to actor Michael Douglas and surprised fans with with her "secret" Welsh accent. Fans immediately noticed the different inflection in her voice and were delighted to hear her embrace it more. "I don't actually think I've ever heard her speak in her normal Welsh accent, she's stunning," said one fan. "I love how the Welshie is still there," noted another. "I remember she used to try and tone down her accent. Glad to see she's letting it out now," said actress' role in Wednesday as Morticia Addams doesn't allow her to show off her accent, but she has had jobs that allowed her to embrace it more. In 2012, The Standard reported that John Morgan, the producer of A Mountain To Climb, a film about a charity trek to raise money for the NSPCC Wales, encouraged her to use it for her voice-over. "We made sure that when we went to record her in her home in Spain, she had the full Welsh treatment before we started recording," Morgan told the outlet. "I was there and I'm a Welshman, a woman from the NSPCC was there who's also Welsh, and a Welsh person who did the sound. And we encouraged her to talk to her dad on the phone too. The end result sounds wonderful." 🎬SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬 Catherine Zeta-Jones 'Finally' Lets Out Real Accent in Candid Interview and Fans Are Stunned first appeared on Parade on Jul 31, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jul 31, 2025, where it first appeared. Swift's praise for Kelce's new acting venture is just the latest time she's showed support for her boyfriend's career, with the 14-time Grammy winner frequently cheering him on at Chiefs games throughout the 2023 and 2024 seasons. She also backed him up at his Tight End University event this past June, surprising Kelce's guests with a performance of 'Shake It Off' one night. '[Taylor] just went out there without practicing, and it was pitch-perfect,' Kelce later gushed on his New Heights podcast. '[She] just killed it.' The Eras Tour headliner isn't the only half of Tayvis that's been active on Instagram lately. One day prior to Swift showing love to Happy Gilmore 2, Kelce shared a number of photos of himself and the singer, giving fans a rare look into their romance. Swift's younger brother, Austin, also appeared in a couple of the snaps, which appear to show him going on a fishing trip and hiking with his sister's boyfriend and Kelce's older brother, Jason.
