
The £2.50 dried fruit that lowers your blood pressure and boosts gut health
Caramelly and chewy, dates are nature's candy – a toffee-sized fruit to satisfy sweet cravings in place of something that comes out of a wrapper. As a nutritionist, I'm a fan. Most in this country are sold dried, not fresh. Popular Medjool dates are larger, richer, softer and therefore pricier than Deglet Noor which have a lighter honey flavour. Either can be enjoyed just as they are, or else added to all manner of both sweet and savoury dishes.
Culinary versatility is one of the beauties of dates. Think past date loaf and experiment with adding sweet notes to savoury salads, throwing a handful chopped into a bowl to balance out peppery rocket or sharp cheese. Or try soaking dates in a little hot water for a few minutes then blending into anything from a sweet-and-sour marinade to a sweet-and-acidic vinaigrette. Whizzed to a sticky paste in a food processor, dates also help bind reduced-sugar bakes such as brownies.
At their simplest, though, dates can be slit open, pitted and spread with anything from melted chocolate to nut butter to soft cheese. Although more costly than dried fruit such as raisins, dates are so intensely sweet that a little goes a long way. They have a long shelf life, too, so you can enjoy one or two then store the rest in a jar ready to call on as an immediate, hassle-free and nutrient-dense snack.
Why are dates nutritious?
A small handful of dates (about 34g) counts as one of your five-a-day or 30 plant varieties a week and provides a range of nutrients:

Dates also provide some magnesium and calcium. Many dried dates contain the allergen sulphur dioxide so check labels if necessary.
The health benefits of dates
1. Dates support heart health
As fibre-rich carbohydrates, dates help protect the heart: eating more fibre has been linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and obesity, as well as lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure. Fibre does all this in three ways:
It keeps us feeling fuller for longer which can help maintain a healthy body weight, in turn benefitting blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol management
It takes longer to digest, delaying the rate at which glucose and fats in our meals are absorbed into the bloodstream
It provides food for the friendly bacteria in our guts, encouraging the production of short-chain fatty acids, or SCFAs. These SCFAs are thought to have cardio-protective characteristics.
2. Dates are good for the gut
As well as being beneficial to heart health, fibre and SCFAs are central to a happy gut, both nourishing the friendly bacteria in our gut microbiome and protecting the gut lining itself. Together these promote a flourishing, healthy gut which has been linked to improved immunity and overall well-being. Polyphenols – powerful compounds contained in all plants, including dates – also nourish our gut microbiome.
To reap all these benefits, including keeping our digestive system regular, we should aim to eat 30g of fibre daily but the average UK intake is closer to 18g. Hitting 30g in a day's eating might look like:
A handful of dates (2.6g fibre)
A bowl of porridge topped with sliced banana and chopped nuts (8.5g)
Hummus, granary bread and veggie sticks (12.5g)
Vegetable and lentil ragù with wholewheat spaghetti (6.5.g)
3. Dates are micronutrient-rich
A handful of dates provides a range of vitamins and minerals which count towards our daily micronutrient targets and help us feel at our best. They're high in potassium and chloride, which control fluid balance, and iron, which helps make the red blood cells that carry oxygen around our bodies. We also need the copper in dates to produce red and white blood cells. They're equally high in manganese, needed to activate enzymes in our body, including those required for digestion. Finally, they provide vitamin B3 (or niacin) which also promotes digestion by helping us release energy from food, as well as supporting the nervous system.
4. Anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
As noted above, dates are rich in many polyphenols. These include beta-carotene, lycopene, flavonoids and anthocyanins. All have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics, meaning they help protect the cells in our bodies from damage, illness or toxins. Scientific interest in polyphenols is high and a growing number of studies indicate these polyphenols may have a role to play in either preventing or treating cardiovascular disease, cancer and obesity.
5. They slow glucose absorption
Sweetened only with fructose (natural fruit sugar), dates make a nutrient-dense, wholefood swap for a processed biscuit when we're craving something sweet. Their GI index – that is the measure of how quickly foods raise blood glucose – is low to medium because their high-fibre content slows digestion, preventing sugars from spiking. 'Dressing them up' by eating them alongside some protein and healthy fat (for example by mixing them with nuts or nut butter) will also blunt glucose absorption. Put together, these factors help you avoid the energy-and-mood roller-coaster of sugar spikes followed by slumps that you'd instead get from eating a sweet biscuit.
All the same, it's important to remember that dates are still high in sugar, fruit sugar or not – so they're not to be eaten without any moderation. If consumed regularly in excess, dried fruits, like dates or apricots, can damage teeth, both because they're sugary and because they're sticky and tend to coat tooth enamel. Offset this by eating them either as part of a meal or, if snacking, pairing with another food (like that nut butter again).
What does a portion of dates look like?
Limit portions to a small handful. It's easy to over-consume dried fruit because it's small and snackable: you'd likely never eat more than one or two whole fresh apricots at once, for example, but you might get through a great many more dried ones without really considering it. And although we tend to normally only eat dates dried, not fresh, the same principle applies and can be useful to help us visualise appropriate portions. In doing so, we can keep sugar and energy intake in check.
Using dates in baking
Whilst we talk sugar, a final footnote on baking. There's a myth that baking with syrups such as date, maple or honey is more nutritious than baking with caster sugar. It's true that these liquid sweeteners contain less sugar (versus 100g caster sugar, honey contains 80g, date syrup 66g and maple syrup 65g) but do be aware that they're all still considered free sugars and your body will treat them all equally.
Free sugars are any that are added to food and drink, plus the sugar in fruit juice, honey and syrups – and we should aim to limit them to prevent tooth decay and weight gain. In any case, blending dates whole at home retains the fibre and other nutrients whilst a shop-bought bottle of date syrup has had all these valuable nutrients stripped out during processing. So, if you want to try baking with date syrup, don't buy it, make your own easy version at home (see Tip 1 below).

Are dates high in iron?
Yes, they're a good plant-based source making them particularly useful for vegetarians and vegans who must ensure they get enough. Dried apricots are high in iron, too, so mixing the two fruits together in the muesli and salad below is a simple way to boost intake.
Are dates good for arthritis?
The polyphenols in dates may help manage arthritis but current scientific evidence isn't conclusive. The NHS recommends a healthy balanced diet to those suffering with arthritis, centred on a variety of fruits and vegetables, wholegrains, healthy fats plus meat, fish, eggs or plant-based protein, such as beans and legumes.

Trump administration gives California ultimatum over banning transgender athletes from high school sports
Donald Trump 's Department of Justice has fired a massive broadside against school districts in ' woke ' Democratic California amid escalating fury over trans athletes born boys competing against girls. The firestorm has flared after AB Hernandez, 16, a biological male who identifies as a girl, crushed female teen rivals in a competition over the weekend. The high school junior took gold medals in the high jump and triple jump at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state finals held on May 30 and 31 at Buchanan High School in Clovis, 13 miles north of Fresno. Hernandez, of Jurupa Valley in Riverside County, 60 miles east of Los Angeles, regularly - and unsurprisingly - trounces their female rivals. The latest victories follow Trump's fuming online attacks against Hernandez, trans athletes in girls' sports and California Governor Gavin Newsom, a favorite target of his ire. In February, he signed the 'Keep Men Out of Women's Sports' executive order. Now the Civil Rights Division of the DoJ is gunning for the California Interscholastic Federation - the state's governing body for high school sports - and the use of 'unconstitutional' Bylaw 300.D in state schools that permits trans boys to compete against girls. It has come out swinging, demanding that school districts in the Golden State ignore the controversial statute. The districts have been given a seven-day deadline of June 9 to inform DoJ officials of their response - and the clock is ticking towards a showdown. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhilon wrote to state school districts in a Monday, June 2 letter: 'As a member of the California Interscholastic Federation ('CIF'), and a political subdivision of the State of California, you are exposed to legal liability due to a policy CIF has enacted that violates federal law. 'CIF Bylaw 300.D requires California public high schools to allow male participation in girls' interscholastic athletics: 'All students should have the opportunity to participate in CIF activities in a manner that is consistent with their gender identify, irrespective of the gender listed on the student's records.' (emphasis added). Section 300.D, however, is facially unconstitutional. 'The Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex. 'Knowingly depriving female students of athletic opportunities and benefits on the basis of their sex would constitute unconstitutional sex discrimination under the Equal Protection Clause. 'Scientific evidence shows that upsetting the historical status quo and forcing girls to compete against males would deprive them of athletic opportunities and benefits because of their sex. 'Therefore, you cannot implement a policy allowing males to compete alongside girls, because such a policy would deprive girls of athletic opportunities and benefits bases solely on their biological sex, in violation of the Equal Protection Clause.' The letter continues, 'As a political subdivision, you have the obligation to comply with the Equal Protection Clause. 'To ensure compliance and avoid legal liability, you must certify in writing by 5:00p.m. ET on June 9, 2025, that you will not implement CIF Bylaw 300.D.' Sonja Shaw, Board President of the Chino Valley Unified School District, which is adjacent to the Jurupa Valley School District, told Daily Mail in a statement in response to the DoJ's letter: 'Newsom and the political cartel, the majority of legislators, the California Dept of Education, and CIF…you're going to lose. 'We told you we'd win this for our daughters and we will. That's a promise - it's only a matter of time! 'You sold out their privacy in locker rooms to push your sick agenda. Boys are boys. Girls are girls. 'The DoJ just called your CIF bylaw what it is - unconstitutional. 'We're not playing games. We won't back down. We won't forget. You're on the wrong side of history. Lawsuits are coming. Investigation. It's all coming down.' In an exclusive interview with Daily Mail over the weekend, conservative women's advocate Riley Gaines branded Hernandez's mother 'evil' for enabling her child. And she condemned 'progressives' in 'woke' Democratic California and Newsom - who she dubbed a 'slimy car salesman' and 'spineless coward' - for enabling biologically born boys to participate in sports alongside girls. She also called out 'crazy unhinged trans activists' for creating chaos. Gaines hit headlines in 2022 as a competitive swimmer for University of Kentucky in the 200-yard NCAA freestyle championship against University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas, a biological male who lives as a woman. She said of Hernandez's mother, Nereyda Hernandez, 43, 'His mom is a pretty evil person,' Gaines declared. 'I believe she is using her son to live out some fantasy or dream that maybe she had. 'She has lied to AB in affirming his identity - the total façade - and in the process has harmed real women. 'I have empathy for AB. He's a victim as well. But that doesn't give him the right to trample on women in the process to fulfill his happiness. 'AB Hernandez is of course not the first boy to compete in the state of California - whether it's track and field, whatever sport it may be,' commented Gaines. 'He is following the rules. So I don't have any animosity or hatred or wish any sort of ill will on the boy. Ultimately, it's the rules that are the problem. 'This dangerous bylaw forced schools to allow biological males to compete in girls' sports and access private spaces. 'But the DOJ made it clear: 'This policy would deprive girls of athletic opportunities and benefits based solely on their biological sex.' 'Districts are now legally liable if they implement this insanity. They have until June 9 to certify that they will not enforce CIF Bylaw 300D — or face consequences. 'This is a historic win. A win for truth. A win for parents. A win for our daughters. A win for our nation. 'Common sense is finally making a comeback. Levi Wright's parents emotionally reveal 3-year-old's final moments on one-year anniversary of tragic death
Levi Wright's mom and dad emotionally remembered their late son's final moments on the one-year anniversary of his accidental death. Last year in May 2024, their three-year son had been riding his toy tractor when he drove it into a raging creek near their home in Utah. Two weeks later, his mom Kallie and rodeo star father Spencer took their little boy off of life support after doctors said that he had suffered brain death due to oxygen deprivation while underwater. Kallie shared a new post on Monday to an Instagram page dedicated to Levi - and revealed both she and Spencer were able to hold their son as he passed away. 'A year ago today we held you as you took your last breaths,' she began alongside a photo of herself and her husband cradling Levi on a hospital bed. 'They said it could take a day or 2, I was so scared I wouldnt be holding you when you left and that was so important to me. You stayed with us 17 minutes.' Levi was driving his tractor on their land and crossed the creek, which divided the property between theirs and Levi's grandparents. Kallie previously explained that the water in the creek 'only runs through for a short time during the year and can change overnight.' In a post post, she added, 'Levi did not do anything he hasn't done before, but this time the water was at its peak and strong enough to push his tractor off the road into the creek as he drove through.' According to a statement from the Beaver County Sheriff's Office, Levi was 'quickly located' and received 'life-saving measures.' Kallie dove into the creek to rescue her son after he disappeared beneath the surface of the fast-flowing waters. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance before being airlifted to the children's hospital in Salt Lake City. The initial prognosis was devastating as doctors concluded he suffered brain death due to oxygen deprivation while underwater. But his heart was beating on its own and Levi's dad said the family 'received multiple small miracles' and doctors were 'surprised by the strides he has made.' He survived 12 days in the hospital with flickers of hope that he could regain brain function before his devastated parents shared they had to say goodbye and turn off his life support on June 2. In the the obituary she wrote for her son, Kallie said that 'Levi was exceptionally thoughtful and considerate for his age. He was constantly thinking of others.' The grief-stricken mother continued: 'His heart was pure, tender, and oversized. Levi loved his sister, Steeley, and playing with her was one of his greatest joys.' During Levi's funeral, his sister - who was five at the time - gave a heartbreaking eulogy to her late brother. Steeley bravely climbed up on a stool behind the podium where she spoke of her immense adoration for her brother, with gentle encouragement from her mother. 'Levi was my best friend,' his brave sister told the audience of mourners. 'I loved coloring with him and reading books. We always have fun riding our bikes down the hills together.' Steeley added that she and her brother were fond of taking 'walks in front of the water' together. Levi's devastated sister concluded by saying: 'I miss my brother so much, but I'll love him forever.' On the same day of the funeral, Levi's mom Kallie posted a tender tribute to her son, entitled: 'We love you beans!' The video, which was posted on Facebook, was a montage of the different magical moments from Levi's short life. Viewers were able to see Levi as an infant, first learning how to say 'Mama' and 'Dada' as well as him often playing outdoors.
