PM Anwar: Change the govt the legal way, don't undermine the Constitution

Borneo Post21-07-2025
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim
PUTRAJAYA (July 21): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today emphasised that he does not prevent any gathering or criticism of his leadership, including calls for his resignation.
However, he asserted that any attempt to change the government must adhere to democratic principles, either through a general election or a vote of no confidence in Parliament.
He challenged the opposition to bring a no-confidence motion in the Dewan Rakyat today if they have enough support to change the Mandani Government under his leadership.
'Some say Anwar must step down, to rally (to make me step down). The police gave me a report, and I said, don't block the roads. But when they said they would force the government to change, that sounds odd. They said they don't want an election, and I said that's fine.
'I told the (Dewan Rakyat) Speaker (Tan Sri Johari Abdul) to proceed if there's a motion to be voted on today…I'm waiting for a no-confidence motion. If they have the majority, go ahead. The Cabinet will resign. That's how our system works,' he said during a monthly assembly with staff of the Prime Minister's Department (JPM) today.
Anwar also questioned the opposition's ability to rally sufficient support to challenge his leadership, affirming that the Mandani Government continues to enjoy strong backing, with a commanding two-thirds majority in Parliament.
The prime minister said any effort to topple the government without majority support and not done during the election clearly contradicts the Constitution.
'If there is a no-confidence motion, there must be enough votes. But they (opposition) know it can't be done. Insya Allah, we will hold on strongly, with a two-thirds majority, and we will wait for the election, but they want to oust (Anwar) now. This violates the principles of the Constitution and the law,' he said.
He condemned efforts by certain quarters to propagate a narrative of chaos, describing it as a deliberate attempt to incite political instability and public anxiety.
'I remind you, while this government remains tolerant, we will act firmly if the principles of the Federal Constitution are challenged. I want our country to remain peaceful. Why the envy? What has happened?' he said.
He expressed concern over some quarters who deliberately instigated chaos, attempting to paint Malaysia as unsafe and its people as living in desperate conditions.
He reaffirmed his openness to criticism, including claims that he is ineffective in managing the country or calls for his replacement. However, he strongly rejected any actions or narratives that violate the law and undermine the country's political and economic stability. – Bernama anwar ibrahim leadership no-confidence motion resignation

Thailand and Cambodia extend ceasefire amid border tensions

KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to extend a fragile ceasefire following recent deadly border clashes. The conflict, which erupted last month over disputed temple territories, left at least 43 dead before a truce was brokered. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as ASEAN chair, facilitated the ceasefire with backing from US and Chinese mediators. The agreement mandates a halt to all hostilities, including attacks on civilians and military targets. 'Both sides agree to a ceasefire involving all types of weapons, including attacks on civilians and civilian objects and military objectives of either side, in all cases and all areas,' the joint statement read. The deal also prohibits any violations under any circumstances. Initial breaches were reported, but clashes subsided as both sides adhered to the truce. Thai and Cambodian defence officials signed the extension, freezing troop movements and patrols along the 800-kilometre border. Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Seiha emphasised the need to prevent further bloodshed. 'We are here for a detailed ceasefire arrangement to stop bloodshed and the suffering by soldiers and civilians of both sides,' he said. The agreement includes plans for another meeting within a month and a commitment to combat misinformation. Both nations pledged to 'refrain from disseminating false information or fake news in order to de-escalate tensions.' Thai Deputy Defence Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit stressed cooperation as key to progress. 'In order for our discussions today to result in concrete outcomes, both sides needed to show cooperation and sincerity,' he said. The border dispute stems from unclear colonial-era demarcations by French administrators in 1907. Recent clashes displaced over 300,000 people, marking the deadliest violence in the region in a decade. – AFP

Malaysia to continue as mediator in Thailand-Cambodia border conflict

KUALA LUMPUR: ASEAN leaders have unanimously agreed that Malaysia should continue mediating the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed the consensus following discussions among regional leaders. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim engaged with ASEAN counterparts before meeting Thai and Cambodian delegations for the Extraordinary General Border Committee Meeting. The meeting, held at Wisma Perwira, saw strong backing for Malaysia's mediation efforts. Saifuddin Nasution stated that ASEAN leaders endorsed the existing bilateral mechanism while planning further talks. Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari and Chief of Defence Forces General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar also attended the discussions. Malaysia praised Cambodia and Thailand for their commitment to resolving tensions through dialogue. The minister highlighted ASEAN principles of consultation, trust, and mutual respect upheld during negotiations. He emphasised that the ceasefire represents a pledge to safeguard lives and prevent further conflict. Both nations agreed to maintain troop positions and avoid reinforcements along the border. The Agreed Minutes prohibit unprovoked firing to prevent escalation. Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister General Tea Seiha and Thailand's Acting Defence Minister General Nattaphon Narkphanit co-chaired the meeting. Observers included US Ambassador Edgard D. Kagan and Chinese Ambassador Ouyang Yujing. Malaysia reaffirmed its readiness to assist in confidence-building and ceasefire monitoring. - Bernama
