PM Anwar: Change the govt the legal way, don't undermine the Constitution
PUTRAJAYA (July 21): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today emphasised that he does not prevent any gathering or criticism of his leadership, including calls for his resignation.
However, he asserted that any attempt to change the government must adhere to democratic principles, either through a general election or a vote of no confidence in Parliament.
He challenged the opposition to bring a no-confidence motion in the Dewan Rakyat today if they have enough support to change the Mandani Government under his leadership.
'Some say Anwar must step down, to rally (to make me step down). The police gave me a report, and I said, don't block the roads. But when they said they would force the government to change, that sounds odd. They said they don't want an election, and I said that's fine.
'I told the (Dewan Rakyat) Speaker (Tan Sri Johari Abdul) to proceed if there's a motion to be voted on today…I'm waiting for a no-confidence motion. If they have the majority, go ahead. The Cabinet will resign. That's how our system works,' he said during a monthly assembly with staff of the Prime Minister's Department (JPM) today.
Anwar also questioned the opposition's ability to rally sufficient support to challenge his leadership, affirming that the Mandani Government continues to enjoy strong backing, with a commanding two-thirds majority in Parliament.
The prime minister said any effort to topple the government without majority support and not done during the election clearly contradicts the Constitution.
'If there is a no-confidence motion, there must be enough votes. But they (opposition) know it can't be done. Insya Allah, we will hold on strongly, with a two-thirds majority, and we will wait for the election, but they want to oust (Anwar) now. This violates the principles of the Constitution and the law,' he said.
He condemned efforts by certain quarters to propagate a narrative of chaos, describing it as a deliberate attempt to incite political instability and public anxiety.
'I remind you, while this government remains tolerant, we will act firmly if the principles of the Federal Constitution are challenged. I want our country to remain peaceful. Why the envy? What has happened?' he said.
He expressed concern over some quarters who deliberately instigated chaos, attempting to paint Malaysia as unsafe and its people as living in desperate conditions.
He reaffirmed his openness to criticism, including claims that he is ineffective in managing the country or calls for his replacement. However, he strongly rejected any actions or narratives that violate the law and undermine the country's political and economic stability. – Bernama anwar ibrahim leadership no-confidence motion resignation

Asean must defend 'centrality' for regional prosperity, says Tok Mat
KUALA LUMPUR: It is crucial for Asean to defend the foundation of Asean centrality to ensure the continued prosperity and well-being of the regional bloc, said Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. The Foreign Affairs Minister noted that losing this crucial foundation would weaken Asean on the global stage. Asean centrality refers to the concept that Asean serves as the leader and hub of regional cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. " It (Asean centrality) is our strength, characterized by mutual understanding among its members, unmatched by other blocs. "We must safeguard this as best as we can. "If the foundation of Asean centrality is threatened by any party, it will weaken Asean," he said in response to a question from Manndzri Nasib (PN-Tenggara) in Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (July 24). As Asean Chair, Mohamad stated that Malaysia is playing its role as the permanent shepherd for Asean Vision 2045 to further cultivate Asean centrality. "That is why the theme of Asean 2025 is inclusivity and sustainability. "We chose inclusivity as the lead for the theme to demonstrate the inclusivity of all Asean members as one big family," he added. Due to this strength, many countries and regional blocs want to become dialogue partners with Asean. Currently, there are 11 dialogue partners, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and China. "Before becoming dialogue partners with Asean, countries must sign the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC). "Uruguay and Algeria recently became dialogue partners with Asean after signing the treaty. "The upcoming Asean Summit this October will see Italy, Sweden, and Lithuania signing the treaty," he added. Currently, 57 nations have signed the TAC, which was drafted in 1976 to ensure that the Asean region remains conflict-free and neutral.

Over 1,800 cases investigated under Peaceful Assembly Act since 2012, says Home Minister
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1,815 cases have been investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 nationwide from 2012 to June 2025, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. The Home Minister said that of the total cases, 33 cases have been prosecuted in court, and nine were convicted under the law. 'In line with the Federal Court's decision declaring Section 9(5) of this Act unconstitutional, the Home Ministry will thoroughly review and reassess the Act before setting any new stance and direction. 'This will be done in line with democratic principles, respect for human rights, and the current needs of the country,' he said in a written parliamentary reply on Thursday (July 24). He was responding to a question by Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi) who had asked the ministry to state the total number of people investigated, charged and convicted under the Act and the government's stance following the recent court decision. Saifuddin said that the ministry's position on this Act will be established after conducting a careful and balanced review. He also said that the right to freedom of peaceful assembly guaranteed by the Federal Constitution would also be considered. Previously, it was reported that the Home Ministry will table amendments to Section 11 of the Act. He also said that the Cabinet decided to impose a moratorium on prosecutions under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 as an initial step towards comprehensive reform of laws related to the right to assemble. A five-member bench of the Federal Court had ruled that a provision under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, which penalised an organiser who failed to provide the police with a five-day prior notice before holding an assembly, was unconstitutional.

M40 also benefit from RON95 price cut, toll hike postponement, says Anwar
PUTRAJAYA: The M40 group also benefits from government initiatives aimed at reducing the cost of living, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said initiatives such as the reduction in RON95 fuel prices and the postponement of toll rate hikes for 10 highways nationwide are among the benefits the M40 group stands to gain. ALSO READ: Don't belittle RM100 cash aid under Sara, says Anwar Speaking at the ministry's monthly assembly here Thursday (July 24), he said this is because the group that most frequently uses vehicles and toll roads is the M40. "So if the M40 group says we're only focusing on the B40 for now … we actually started even lower - with the hardcore poor - then moved to the B40, and now we're moving up to the M40. "That's the situation. That's why I said we need to be patient with the implementation. But at the very least, Alhamdulillah, for the M40 group and above, both RON95 and the toll initiatives bring benefits," he said. ALSO READ: Good news – cash aid, cheaper fuel On Wednesday (July 23), in his "Appreciation Announcement for Malaysians", the Prime Minister said the government had agreed to postpone toll rate hikes for 10 highways to allow the public to continue enjoying the current rates. Among the highways involved are the Senai-Desaru Expressway (SDE), East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2), South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE), Butterworth Outer Ring Road (LLB) and the KL-Putrajaya Expressway (MEX).
