
Why the Mitsubishi Outlander's Australian chassis tune took so long
At the launch of the upgraded Outlander, the Japanese auto brand said the delay in undertaking its most comprehensive product development program since it ceased car manufacturing in Australia in March 2008 was due to recent global events and plenty of customer and media feedback.
Among a host of other equipment and detail updates, the headline act of the 2025 Outlander is a suspension and steering package developed in Australia, specifically on roads south of Adelaide, where previous Mitsubishi models including the Magna and 380 were also partly developed.
As you can read in our review, the result is a car that steers more precisely and rolls over less in bends, yet is more compliant over bumps and more stable in a straight line, while also being more refined inside thanks to reduced noise and vibration levels.
Mitsubishi Australia product manager Tony Dorrington said the global pandemic delayed local development of the Outlander, but also allowed more time for owner and press feedback of the pre-update model.

'If we think back to COVID times, a lot of the Outlander's development was done during COVID. That really prevented that collaborative effort. Japanese [engineers] couldn't travel here, we couldn't travel to Japan,' he said. 'What really prompted it was the feedback that we got from [media] and from our customers.'
The Outlander's local chassis tune involves recalibrated electric power steering and revised suspension including smaller-diameter front anti-roll bars to suit the retuned steering, plus new front and rear shock absorbers, and different front and rear spring rates, in conjunction with increased cabin insulation and revised body materials and reinforcements to create a quieter and more comfortable cabin experience.
Mr Dorrington said Mitsubishi Australia's work in developing the Outlander's new steering and suspension setup had been well-received by its Japanese parent company, prompting its rollout in many other global markets.
'When we became a core market for [Mitsubishi Motors], they came here and did a lot of road surveys. Out of that, they acknowledged that developing a local tune for Outlander would be really beneficial for our customers,' he said.
'As I'm sure you know, Australia is probably the toughest proving ground in the world. In the end, [Mitsubishi] acknowledged that what we had done locally would be applicable for the rest of the world.
'They took cars to the US and Europe and got them to evaluate them, and they agreed.'
Mitsubishi's local CEO Shaun Westcott said Australia's roads are a perfect testing ground for new models, and a stretch of Inman Valley Road from Yankalilla to Victor Harbor had also been used to test previous Mitsubishi models like the South Australian-made 380 in the early 2000s.
'In fairness, and I don't want to be disparaging about Australian roads, but they're – and I don't want to say they're below world standards – they're actually below world standards,' he said.
'The cars were typically developed for European, American markets, but once we had the car in-market, developed during COVID so limited options to test it in Australia, we identified through [initial feedback] where people picked up on some of the harshness that was coming through the suspension and things like that.'
Mr Westcott said the feedback from media and customers was relayed to the brand's headquarters, which showed interest in why Australia's conditions were unique, prompting a simple suggestion from the local division to 'come and see'.
'That really started a significant development program to the point now that Japan has actually replicated an Australian road, they came and scanned a section of [Inman Valley Road], and rebuilt it at our Tokachi testing ground in Japan,' he added.
When asked about whether Australia would play a role in the development of future Mitsubishi models, product strategy and product relations general manager Bruce Hampel said the lessons learned from Outlander would be carried forward.
'What they've found… and the proof point of that is that they intended to do this as an Australian-only tune for Outlander but it ended up turning into the global tune,' he said.
'We've found that in other companies as well that if you get it right in Australia, it actually works quite well globally.
'So as they've now learnt that and they're embracing it more and more, getting a deeper understanding of the Australian market conditions and the customer preferences, we're expanding that into all the product lines going forward.'
The next Mitsubishi model to feature an Australian-developed chassis tune will be the Outlander PHEV, which is due to launch locally in September.

The biggest interior upgrade is reserved for rear-seat occupants, who score a 50W refrigerator built into the centre console, and an entertainment system comprising a 17.3-inch 3K multimedia screen that flips down from the roof and can be controlled by voice, gesture, touch, or mobile phone. According to Autohome, the Chinese-market Tank 500 also gains a new roof-mounted Hesai LTX LiDAR sensor plus new cameras on the front fenders and rear spoiler to support upgraded advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) capabilities powered by GWM's third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra safety suite. The Tank 500 was first revealed in China in 2021, before its domestic launch in 2022 in both turbocharged 3.0-litre petrol V6 and turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol hybrid forms. The latter has powered the Tank 500 in Australia since its local launch in March 2024, but the seven-seat off-road wagon did receive a safety and powertrain system upgrades in response to criticism in December 2024, which were made available to new and existing owners earlier this month. Recently, GWM also revealed its first Tank 500 diesel, powered by the same 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel as the smaller Tank 300 and the Cannon Alpha ute. However, this Thai-built variant was ruled out for Australia, which will instead receive a beefier new 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel by around 2027. For now, Australia's Tank 500 hybrid will be joined by one of two plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains already available in China from October, beating both the Prado and the top-selling Ford Everest to market with PHEV power – and becoming the first large, ladder-frame SUV to offer such a powertrain in Australia. GWM Australia won't say whether it will be the same off-road-focused 'Hi4-T' system that's also available in the Cannon Alpha PHEV, which combines a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a single electric motor to produce 300kW of power and 750Nm of torque, or the on-road-focussed, dual-motor Hi4-Z powertrain that slams down a mammoth 635kW and 1195Nm. 'There's no confirmation yet on which powertrain will be offered for the ANZ market,' the GWM Australia spokesperson told CarExpert today. 'The [Tank 500 PHEV] launch in October will be centred on the powertrain reveal.' Both of the Tank 500's PHEV powertrains are based around the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four, but while the Hi4-T continues with a mechanical four-wheel-drive system, transfer case and differential locks, there's no mechanical connection between the front and rear electric motors of the Hi4-Z, which has multi-link rear suspension and almost double the battery capacity. In China, the Tank 500 Hi4-Z has a 59.05kWh battery pack positioned between the axles rather than at the rear, offering a claimed 201km (WLTC) of electric-only driving range and 1096km of total range. But even the Hi4-T offers 45kW/102Nm higher outputs than the standard Tank 500 hybrid, while still being capable to ford water up to 800mm deep and offering similar off-road geometry, albeit with 11mm less ground clearance. It offers 110km of range on the WLTC cycle. The Tank 500 Hi4-T weighs 398kg more than the plugless hybrid version already on sale here, while the Hi4-Z weighs another 150kg at 2980kg. GWM Australia previously told CarExpert the PHEV version would attract an estimated price premium of between $6000 and $15,000 over the current Tank 500 HEV, which is available in two equipment grades priced from $66,490 drive-away. So you can expect a starting price of about $72,000 drive-away for the cheapest Tank 500 PHEV, given the single-motor Hi4-T powertrain seems more likely for Australia. 'It's going to depend on the size of the battery pack… range and battery size is what defines pricing,' GWM Australia marketing and communications boss Steve Maciver told us previously.

Cheaper Hyundai Ioniq 2 EV spied testing ahead of official reveal
Hyundai already has a small electric SUV with the Kona Electric, but it's working on another that's set to go on sale in 2026. According to UK publication Autocar, Hyundai has confirmed it will reveal an unnamed electric crossover in the next few months which will hit Europe showrooms in late 2026. The unnamed crossover is believed to be the Hyundai Ioniq 2 five-door small SUV caught testing in Europe ahead of its official reveal, the timing suggesting it will be on display at the Munich motor show in Germany this September. The Ioniq 2 is expected to face a swag of circa €30,000 ($A53,618) electric rivals in Europe, including the Renault 5 E-Tech and upcoming Volkswagen ID.2. Having just launched the Ioniq 9 flagship electric SUV in Australia – its most expensive car ever – the Ioniq 2 will join the Ioniq 5 hatchback and Ioniq 6 sedan as the fourth model in the Ioniq EV range. Hyundai has previously said it intends to introduce Ioniq EV models from 1 to 9, with each higher number corresponding to an increase in size. There's little official information on the Ioniq 2 so far, which beyond a reference to an unnamed electric crossover is yet to be officially confirmed by the automaker.
