BJP spent more than AAP on Holi celebrations at Assembly: Congress RTI reply
NEW DELHI: The newly formed BJP government spent Rs 8.5 lakh on a Holi Milan celebration held at the Delhi Assembly this year—over seven times higher than the expenditure under the previous AAP administration, which spent Rs 91,000 in 2022 and Rs 1.16 lakh in 2023. The information was revealed in response to an RTI query filed by the Delhi Congress.
'According to information accessed by Delhi Congress through its RTI (Rights to Information) Cell from the Delhi Assembly Secretariat, the BJP Government spent Rs 8,42,787 for the 'Holi Milan' celebration held at the Delhi Assembly within one month after the formation of the Government,' the party said in a statement.
The RTI reply has also revealed that the AAP Government had spent Rs 91,313 in 2022 and Rs 1,16,842 in 2023 for Holi celebrations, it added.
According to the break-up provided in the RTI reply by the Delhi Assembly Secretariat, Rs 7,500 was spent for purchasing 'gulal' (coloured powder) and Rs 4,22,500 for refreshments, spent by the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Department. However, no information was provided on how the rest of the more than Rs 4 lakh was spent for the Holi Milan celebration.

Another top Maoist with 45L bounty killed in encounter
Raipur: In yet another big blow to the Left Wing Extremism (LWE), another senior Maoist rank cadre — Bhaskar, who carried Rs 45 lakh bounty — was neutralized on Friday in an encounter that broke out in the same area where Maoists central committee member Sudhakar alias Tentu Lakshmi Narasimha Chalam was gunned down on Thursday in the forests of Bijapur. The encounter was part of the same anti-Maoist operation underway since Wednesday being carried out by personnel from the state police's Special Task Force (STF), District Reserve Guard (DRG) and CoBRA. Intermittent firing between security forces and the Maoist ultras took place the whole day and after the guns fell silent, security forces recovered the body of 45-year-old Maoist Bhaskar, who carried a bounty of Rs 25 lakh in Chhattisgarh and Rs 20 lakh in Telangana. Bhaskar was a Special Zonal Committee member of Telangana State Committee and was reportedly operating in the dense forests of Indravati National Park — a known Maoist stronghold. Three days ago, TOI had reported that security forces in Bastar have precise information on the locations of nine top Maoist commanders in Bastar division, and an operation to eliminate them is imminent unless they surrender. In the same operation on June 5, security forces had recovered the body of Central Committee member Gautam alias Sudhakar along with an AK-47 rifle. The search operation in the area is still ongoing to trace other Maoist cadres in the nearby area. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday said the Delhi government will set up 7,000 smart classrooms in its schools by the end of the year. She added that 175 digital libraries and 100 A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Language Labs offering foreign language instruction in English, French, and German will also be made operational in the Delhi government-run schools. The CM made the announcements following a meeting she chaired with the principals of Delhi government schools in her Assembly constituency of Shalimar Bagh. 'Intimidating parents' In a social media post later in the day, she spoke about the 'alarming reports of schools employing bouncers to intimidate parents and students'. 'Education is a right, not a business. Our children deserve compassion, not coercion. Schools must remain spaces of learning, values, and nation-building,' the CM said. Her comments come a day after the Delhi High Court expressed dismay at the 'reprehensible practice' by Delhi Public School, Dwarka, of allegedly hiring bouncers to block the entry of the students who had not paid the increased fee. Ms. Gupta hit out at the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for engaging in 'propaganda about improving education' while 'failing to provide' basic education infrastructure despite being in power for 11 years, citing the state of a government school in her constituency's Haiderpur village. 'The area neither has an English-medium school nor a higher secondary school where science is taught,' she said. The CM added, 'Their much-celebrated school buildings were structurally weak — one built in 2018 deteriorated within just two years. This exposes their 'education model' and shows that it was merely a facade.' She said that many government schools lack proper sports grounds, face hygiene and security issues, and suffer from acute staff shortages. 'Ad hoc hirings' 'Many still do not have full-time principals and are run on ad hoc arrangements,' said Ms. Gupta. 'We are ensuring recruitment for all vacant positions, appointment of permanent principals, and deployment of adequate security and sanitation employees in our schools,' said the CM. She also criticised the Delhi Board of School Education, which was started by the previous AAP government, saying, 'This parallel board could pose issues for students seeking college admissions and may affect the recognition of their certificates in India and abroad. Such decisions [to create a new board] endanger the future of our children.' Ms. Gupta also inaugurated a water cooler at a school in Shalimar Bagh and said that plans are being made to instal such machines in all the nearly 1,000 schools run by the Delhi government as well as in other parts of the city. AAP did not issue any response to the allegations levelled by the CM.
