Gayton McKenzie dodges what LIV Golf event will do for development of golf in SA

Following the announcement on Saturday that LIV Golf will be heading to South Africa in 2026, SA Minister of Sports Gayton McKenzie did not say what the event will do for the development of golf in the country.
The Saudi-funded tournament will be held at the exclusive Steyn City, in Johannesburg, from March 20 to 22 next year.
The event will have a strong home contingent representing the nation with Stingers GC featuring Louis Oosthuizen, Dean Burmester, Charl Schwartzel and Branden Grace.
LIV Golf events, as its name is derived from the Roman numerals for 54, have three 18-hole rounds and currently do not carry world rankings points for the tournaments.

McKenzie on Golf's Elitist Perception and LIV's Impact on SA Golf Development
With tickets well over R500 (30 US dollars per person), although children under 12 will have free entry, it's difficult to see new fans attending the event.
When asked by IOL what the event will do for SA golf development, McKenzie dodged the question: 'I think the uncomfortable truth about this great sport called golf is that it has not truly broken through to the poorest of the poor or the underprivileged in our country, and the masses of black people.
'Golf is still seen, unfortunately so, despite the hard work that the people that are involved, but they've not truly made it a sport for everyone. It is still seen as an elitist sport in a country of 60 million people.
'It's an expensive sport. LIV wants, when they leave, to leave an impact behind.'
McKenzie though, said local artists would also feature in the entertainment at the events.
'We're also going to have headliners, which we've discussed, which is still a surprise, but this is one of the biggest headliners in the world that will play and perform. That headliner will perform with local artists, which will also give local artists exposure.'

PSL 2025/26 season kicks off- #FansMatter too!
THIS weekend marks the official start of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) 2025/2026 season after a long two-month break, which, in another world, would have been enough to iron out some issues that were thorny last season. But, warning - this is South African football; we play on, and we will find ourselves dealing with the very same issues as it has been season in, season out. And because of this, the phrase about 'respecting the fans who spend their hard-earned money to watch games and support us', has got to be the most condescending speech in South African football. Because really, is it respect to serve the very hard-working fans the same problems season after season? Take the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) matter for instance, the season is starting and there is not a single step to point out that it may be here soon. That, after the Minister of Sports Gayton McKenzie promised last season that it will be here by this time. Instead, we learned in the last month that McKenzie has joined the likes of PSL Chairman Irvin Khoza and the South African Football Association (Safa) President Danny Jordaan in the finger-pointing game regarding why the technology is not being implemented. Anyways, VAR is not the only talking point ahead of the season, even though it will probably dominate as we look ahead to neverending refereeing blunders that undermine the hard-working fans, job-always-on-the-line coaches and the game itself. At this stage we can only hope that Safa have done their part to get them (referees) up to speed, fitness and sharpness ahead of the season. Other people who are guilty of serving that condescending speech to the hard-working fans, are those who are the heart of the game themselves - the players. Yes, things are easily said tahn done from the sidelines, behind the keyboard or from the stands, but the fans deserve a bit of an improved quality. It would be nice to see an end to the avalanche of games drawn. It would be nice to see goals, goals and more goals! It would be nice to see a race to the league title and not have Mamelodi Sundowns winning it yet again with about seven or so games still to go. It would be nice to see a hot race to the Golden Boot award, and see it taking us over a 20-goal margin. Honestly, it is not too much to ask that this season, can the #FansMatter too!

Stonehouse will be happy with how his side responded, especially away from home, following the loss to the Cheetahs. While the first half was a grinding affair as both sides looked to get on top, they would've been frustrated with the errors that crept in and saw them changing sides with the score only at 10-7 in favour of the eventual winners. The Bulls were first to score a try after an opening penalty from the visitors. That converted try remained the sole points for the home side. They coughed up plenty of opportunities after good plays, and it looked as if they were going to put up a strong fight. The hosts had the visitors under pressure with their ball-in-hand play for a good part of the first half. However, the experience of the Pumas enabled them to weather the initial storm to claim the upper hand in almost all facets of the game in the final 10 minutes before halftime.

Rodri will not make Manchester City return till September
Manchester City midfielder Rodri will not be at full fitness until after September's international break, Pep Guardiola has revealed. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner missed most of last season due to ligament damage and without him City failed to mount a strong defence of their Premier League crown. The 29-year-old Spanish international fought his way back to fitness but suffered a groin injury in City's defeat to Saudi club Al-Hilal at the Club World Cup in the United States last month. "Rodri's getting better but he had a big injury in the last game against Al-Hilal and for the last five or six weeks," Guardiola said in comments released on Saturday. "He's training right now and in the last two or three days is better. Hopefully maybe the international break is when he will be really, really fit. "Hopefully, in the games (prior to that) he can play some minutes but the important thing is to not have pain because we don't want him to be come back and injured, come back and injured. "We will try desperately to avoid that but he's training the last two or three days with us and that's good." The City staff are also nursing Phil Foden and Mateo Kovacic back to fitness and both players joined Rodri in being left out of a pre-season game in Sicily this week. City face Wolves in their first Premier League game of the season next weekend and then play Tottenham and Brighton before the September internationals. bur/gj/pi
