TOKYO, May 29 — Italian MotoGP rider Luca Marini has suffered serious injuries, including a collapsed lung, after a heavy fall while testing for an endurance race in Japan.
Marini was hospitalised after crashing at the Suzuka circuit on Wednesday, his Honda HRC team said. He was stabilised and will remain under observation in Japan until fit to travel.
The 27-year-old rider posted a picture on his Instagram feed of him lying in a hospital bed.
'Thanks everyone for the support! I'll keep you posted,' he wrote in Italian.
Marini, who finished 15th in the British MotoGP at Silverstone on Sunday, was testing for the Suzuka 8-Hour.
The annual endurance race, one of Japan's biggest motorcycling events, is held at the Honda-owned home Suzuka circuit that also hosts the Formula One Japanese Grand Prix.
Marini completed the first day without incident but crashed heavily on the second, suffering a dislocated hip, knee ligament damage, fractures to his sternum and collarbone and a right collapsed lung.
'Honda HRC and the Honda HRC Castrol team will support Marini fully in his recovery,' the team said in a statement.
Marini is 13th in the 2025 MotoGP world championship standings after seven races. — AFP

Sumo legend Hakuho to resign after stable scandal, say reports

TOKYO, June 2 — Retired sumo great Hakuho will quit the ancient Japanese sport following a row over the forced closure of his wrestling stable for physical abuse, reports said Monday. The Mongolian-born Hakuho won a record 45 tournaments before retiring in 2021 to coach wrestlers, but his stable was indefinitely shuttered in April last year when one of his proteges was accused of bullying. Hakuho was also handed an embarrassing demotion for failing to control the behaviour of Hokuseiho, who allegedly punched his lower-ranked stablemates and stole money from them. The future of Hakuho's stable is still unclear more than a year later, leading the 40-year-old to tender his resignation to the Japan Sumo Association, reports said. The reports said his resignation was accepted at an extraordinary board meeting in Tokyo. When contacted by AFP, the Japan Sumo Association declined to comment. Hakuho, who is currently in Mongolia according to posts he has made on social media, is expected to hold a news conference next week. Born Munkhbat Davaajargal, Hakuho moved to Japan aged 15 and made his sumo debut in 2001. He won his first top-division title in 2006 and went on to fight at the sport's highest rank of yokozuna more times than anyone in history. — AFP

Snakes on a plane: Indian customs nab passenger with 44 venomous vipers from Thailand

MUMBAI, June 2 — A passenger smuggling dozens of venomous vipers was stopped after flying into the financial capital Mumbai from Thailand, Indian customs officials said. The snakes, which included 44 Indonesian pit vipers, had the snakes 'concealed in checked-in baggage', Mumbai Customs said in a statement late Sunday. 'An Indian national arriving from Thailand was arrested,' it added. The passenger, details of whom were not released, also had three Spider-tailed horned vipers -- which are venomous, but usually only target small prey such as birds — as well as five Asian leaf turtles. Mumbai Customs issued photographs of the seized snakes, including blue and yellow reptiles squirming in a bucket. The snakes are a relatively unusual seizure in Mumbai, with customs officers more regularly posting pictures of hauls of smuggled gold, cash, cannabis or pills of suspected cocaine swallowed by passengers. However, in February, customs officials at Mumbai airport also stopped a smuggler with five Siamang gibbons, a small ape native to the forests of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Those small creatures, listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, were 'ingeniously concealed' in a plastic crate placed inside the passenger's trolley bag, customs officers said. In November, customs officers seized a passenger carrying a wriggling live cargo of 12 turtles, and a month before, four hornbill birds, all on planes arriving from Thailand. In September, two passengers were arrested with five juvenile caimans, a reptile in the alligator family. — AFP
