Bank exec charged with seeking girls for sex gets bail
Christopher James McCann, 50, appeared in Brisbane Arrest Court on Monday to apply for bail after being charged with one count of using the internet to procure children aged under 16.
The Sydney-based McCann was extradited to Queensland on Thursday night after being arrested by NSW Police.
McCann described himself online as a corporate finance executive with more than 20 years of experience.
Magistrate Louise Shephard told McCann he was accused of a "terribly serious offence" by allegedly engaging Brisbane sex worker Shauntelle Elizabeth Went, 18, to supply the services of two girls aged 14 or 15.
"You travelled interstate frequently. You formed some kind of connection with (Went). On May 14 police intercepted messages between you and she.
"The allegation is you ... queried her about whether she had younger friends that she worked with."
McCann stood in the dock looking either down or straight ahead during his appearance.
Ms Shephard said McCann was accused of making an arrangement and agreeing on price to use Went's services alongside two underage girls.
"Later the evening Went and the girls attended (a Brisbane CBD five-star hotel)," Ms Shephard said.
"The two girls went to the room and you contacted the front desk to ask them to leave. It is not alleged the girls entered the room.
"The matter was referred by NSW Police to Task Force Argos (Queensland Police child exploitation unit) and on July 8 they executed a search warrant on your home."
A prosecutor opposed bail based on the risk of McCann offending while on bail and the risk to the welfare of the community.
"He lives in NSW. He is a flight risk. He has financial capacity from his previous employment," the prosecutor said.
Ms Shephard said McCann's employment had been terminated.
McCann's barrister David Jones said his client's assets would be frozen.
Mr Jones said the police's affidavit on why his client should be denied bail was speculative and if convicted, he might not face a custodial sentence.
"They are unprofessional. They lack compete objectivity ... they speculate when there is nothing there. It goes so far as fortune telling," he said.
Mr Jones said McCann had no prior criminal record and was willing to abide by a range of conditions including living in Queensland during the court proceedings.
Ms Shephard said she believed there was strength to the prosecution's case against McCann, but the risks of him committing offences or absconding while on bail could be reduced with conditions.
McCann was granted bail on conditions including an overnight curfew and being limited to one mobile phone with no encrypted applications.
Mr Jones declined to comment as he left court.
Went was also granted bail on Monday.
The charges against Went and McCann are set to be mentioned in court again on August 4.

Truck drivers killed in D'Aguilar Highway crash at Nukku in South Burnett
Drivers are being warned to avoid a major highway in the South Burnett as police investigate a horror two-vehicle crash this morning which killed both drivers. Emergency services were called to the D'Aguilar Highway at Nukku, west of Blackbutt, following reports of a head-on crash between a fuel tanker and a heavy rigid transport truck at 5:45am today. The driver of the fuel tanker, a man aged in his 50s, sustained critical injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the transport truck, a man aged in his 30s, sustained critical injuries also died at the scene. Police have since made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act [PSPA] with a 1-kilometre exclusion zone boundary in place encompassing the D'Aguilar Highway, the northern end of Nukku Road and the southern end of Nukku Boundary Road. The highway remains closed in both directions an motorists are urged to avoid the area. A Queensland Fire Department spokesperson said 11 crews, including the rural fire brigade, were initially called to the scene after the cab of one of the trucks caught alight following the crash. The QFD spokesperson said both trucks were fully engulfed when crews arrived and it took two hours to control the blaze. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The Toowoomba Forensic Crash Unit is investigating and officers are calling for anyone with information or relevant dash cam footage to contact police. The crash has occurred just days after authorities launched Road Safety Week. There were 302 fatalities on Queensland roads in 2024, including 64 people across the Southern Region, according to RACQ data. Queensland Police confirmed that as of August 17 there had been 187 lives lost on Queensland roads so far this year, including 11 across the Ipswich District, 19 across the Darling Downs District and three across the South West District. RACQ also confirmed the state electorate of Nanango, where today's crash occurred, had the highest number of road trauma between 2019 and 2023. The data found there were 866 people hospitalised and 66 killed following crashes in the electorate during those years. Queensland Trucking Associaion chief executive officer Gary Mahon said fatality figures were "trending the wrong way" and urged road users to obey the rules to ensure everyone got home safely. "We need to understand and comprehend that there are significant consequences every time you go out on the road if you don't take care," he said. Mr Mahon said the recent statistics should be a wake up call for the government to invest more in interior state roads. "When these sort of statistics are showing up like this it's very compelling and quite confronting when you look at the data about where these serious fatal and injury crashes are occurring," he said.

Two men killed in horror head-on truck and fuel tanker collision on Qld highway
Two truck drivers have been killed after a fuel tanker and a heavy truck crash in the South Burnett region of Queensland. A fuel tanker and a heavy rigid transport truck collided head-on on the D'Aguilar Highway at Nukku shortly before 6am on Thursday. A man in his 50s, who was driving the fuel tanker, sustained critical injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the heavy rigid transport truck, a man in his 30s, also sustained critical injuries and was declared dead at the scene. 'No other vehicles were involved,' police said in a statement. A large fire that broke out following the collision took firefighters two hours to extinguish. The highway has been closed in both directions. An emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act was issued shortly after 6am between the D'Aguilar Highway and the northern end of Nukku Rd and southern end of Nukku Boundary Rd. 'Motorists are urged to avoid the area and drive with care,' police said. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
