José Mourinho fined and banned for pinching rival manager's nose

The Guardian05-04-2025

José Mourinho has been banned for three matches and fined around £6,000 for grabbing the nose of the Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk after Wednesday's dramatic Istanbul derby.
Mourinho, coach of Fenerbahce, approached Buruk at the end of the Turkish Cup quarter-final in the wake of a mass scuffle, and was seen on camera pinching Buruk, who fell to the ground clutching his face.

Buruk was left lying on his back as Mourinho was dragged away, following an ill-tempered game where three players were sent off from the bench.
The Turkish FA said Mourinho would be 'banned from entering the dressing room and the bench for three games' – meaning he will miss matches against Trabzonspor, Sivasspor and Kayserispor.
In his post-game press conference, Buruk tried to play the incident down, although thought it was 'not a classy move'. He said: 'There was nothing between me and Mourinho. He pinched my nose from behind. There was a slight scratch. Of course, it wasn't a very nice or elegant thing to do.
'We expect managers to behave more appropriately in such situations. I won't exaggerate this issue, but it wasn't a classy move.'

Bayern's Sane set to complete Galatasaray move

Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane is set to complete a free transfer to Turkish club Galatasaray. The 29-year-old arrived in Istanbul on Thursday ahead of signing a contract with the Super Lig Turkish club posted photos on their social media of Sane wearing a Galatasaray scarf on his arrival at Ataturk Airport, saying they have "started transfer talks" with the one million supporters tuned in to a live broadcast on Galatasaray's YouTube channel on Tuesday of a flight-tracker showing Sane's plane arriving in the city. Sane, who joined Bayern Munich on a five-year deal from Manchester City in 2020, is out of contract at the Allianz Arena at the end of June. The Bundesliga champions were keen on keeping the winger but Sane rejected the offer of a contract had included Sane in their 29-man squad for the Club World Cup, which begins on 15 he is set to complete a deal with Galatasaray in the coming days, with the Athletic, external reporting he has verbally agreed a three-year deal with the Turkish club. Sane, who won six major trophies in four years with City, claimed three consecutive Bundesliga titles during his first three seasons at Bayern before a fourth last term. He scored 61 goals in 220 matches for Bayern, including 13 in 45 matches last season.

Football transfer rumours: Leroy Sané to return to the Premier League?

Leroy Sané has been heavily linked with a move back to England this summer but looks as if he is going to swap Bayern Munich for Galatasaray, with the Turkish champions reportedly in advanced talks to sign the German international. Sané's contract in Bavaria will run out at the end of the month and, despite an improved offer from Bayern, the winger is favouring Gala after they tabled an offer with wages close to £200,000 a week. Sané's Mr 15%, Pini Zahavi, is still open to counter-offers but Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham will need to move fast if they want to win the race for the 29-year-old. Bayern want to replace Sané with Nico Williams after club scouts expertly identified, along with the rest of Europe, that the Spaniard is very, very good at football. Athletic Bilbao have not given up on keeping their academy product, offering the Pamplona-born winger a new contract, but the release clause of €58m (£48m) means that Bayern (and others) maintain their interest. If Bayern do not get their man, PSG's Bradley Barcola is another name linked – the young Frenchman was named on the bench for the Champions League final, with Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia the preferred front three. The Florian Wirtz saga has kept us gainfully employed for a couple of weeks now, but it looks like it is coming to an end after Bayer Leverkusen agreed a deal with Liverpool – thought to be around £127m, including add-ons – for the playmaker. Just what that means for Darwin Núñez remains to be seen. Liverpool rejected an offer of €70m (£60m) from Al-Nassr in January and now Al-Hilal are thought to be keen. Al-Hilal also offered a lorry full of cash for Theo Hernández, but the Milan full-back rejected the move and instead looks poised to go back to Atlético Madrid – the Frenchman came through Atléti's academy, joining the club at nine, before moving across town to Real Madrid in 2017. Things are looking up for Manchester United fans: the club are in talks to extend the contract of third-choice keeper Tom Heaton, 67, for another year. Oh, and in completely normal behaviour for a club that finished just above the relegation zone, United want to sign Napoli's Victor Osimhen – who has a release clause of €75m (£63m) – and could use Joshua Zirkzee as a makeweight. The Dutch striker thrived in Serie A with Bologna before his move to Old Trafford. Fresh from running the show for Belgium against Wales, Kevin De Bruyne looks set to buy a few gallons of sun cream after agreeing a two-year contract with Napoli. The 33-year-old will join the Italian champions on a free transfer. Where will Jamie Vardy land after his exit from Leicester City? The Rumour Mill would love to see the Englishman's very particular brand in MLS – but the 38-year-old surely has the quality to remain in Britain, whether it is in the Premier League, Championship or in Scotland – Rangers and Celtic have both been linked with the striker. Nick Pope, a key performer in goal for the Magpies last season, is likely to be unimpressed with those rumours, especially with just one year remaining on his Newcastle contract.

Leroy Sane 'verbally agrees' to massive contract after Arsenal transfer links

Leroy Sane had attracted lots of attention, including from Arsenal, in recent weeks, but he is now set to snub the Gunners and Bayern Munich to join Galatasaray Arsenal have missed out on the signing of Leroy Sane after Galatasaray jumped to the front of the queue. Sane is an in-demand commodity in the summer transfer window because his Bayern Munich contract is about to expire and Arsenal are one of the clubs who have shown an interest in signing the winger. Sane's contract has been a long-running drama at Bayern this year, with stories continually leaking about his future. The Bavarian giants had been confident of securing the winger's services beyond the expiry of his deal on June 30, but that hope has now disappeared. ‌ The 29-year-old will now skip the Club World Cup, which kicks off in the United States this weekend, in order to seal a move elsewhere. There was interest from the Premier League, Napoli, Saudi club Al-Hilal and Fenerbahce but Galatasaray have beaten them all to capture the Germany international. ‌ L'Équipe says that Arsenal have dropped out of the race after Sane's representatives went to Istanbul to hammer out a deal. Sky Sports Germany says he has now verbally agreed to join the Turkish side as a free agent when his Bayern deal expires on June 30. He will sign a three-year contract with Galatasaray that is worth €15million (£12.72m) per year, according to The Athletic, which is roughly equivalent to £475,000-a-week. It is quite the coup from the club, who did the domestic double last season by winning the Turkish Super Lig and Turkish Cup. Galatasaray are about to lose their star player from the 2024/25 season, with Victor Osimhen's loan spell from Napoli expiring. Osimhen is being courted by a number of clubs, including those in the Premier League, ahead of a transfer this summer, and Sane will take up the mantle as the club's biggest star. The news will come as a blow to Arsenal, who had targeted Sane as a way of strengthening their options on the wing. The Germany international represented a cheaper alternative to Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams and already has a relationship with Mikel Arteta from their time together at Manchester City. HAVE YOUR SAY! Who should Arsenal sign to play on the wing next season? Comment below. ‌ Early in his Bayern spell, Sane talked up the influence Arteta had on his career. "I can just say positive things about Mikel Arteta. Since we started working together, he has helped me a lot on the pitch," he told The Independent. "He tried to improve my football, he told me what I did good and what I did wrong, and he tried to work on it. Next to Pep, they both really helped me and improved me, to bring me to the next level. "Even now, at Arsenal, for me, you can see he's doing a great job. You can see he has a concept, a way that he wants to play, a way that he wants his team to play, and obviously, it will take some time until everybody really understands it. I think he will do a great job as a [head] coach too." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
