Battleground Tamil Nadu: Why Stalin's DMK appears to hold the pole position

India Today25-05-2025

When M.K. Stalin took oath as Tamil Nadu chief minister on May 7, 2021, he introduced himself—perhaps for the first time in his long public life—as 'Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin'. Four years later, that nod to legacy seems not to have been empty grandstanding. With just a year left for the next assembly election, not only is the DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) on solid footing, Stalin can be said to have spawned a force-field all his own in Indian politics.advertisementA calculated mix of welfare, symbolism and federal resistance takes his imprint beyond the horizons of local administration and realpolitik. With that larger political-ideological aura on Stalin, to hazard a guess, Tamil Nadu looks all sewn up.The Opposition, for one, lacks a coherent argument. The iffy AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam)-BJP dalliance comes with too much drag. An aggregated vote-share of 41 per cent in 2024, even topping the DMK alliance's in about 13 Lok Sabha seats, prompted their patch-up after a 2023 divorce.
But Tamil politics doesn't run on simple math. The AIADMK's votes could be said to have been vouchsafed to it because it had split with the BJP. As the 2026 poll nears, it can't risk opposing the DMK's stands on themes like delimitation or language. In a political culture deeply allergic to northern impositions, swimming with the BJP on these issues is tantamount to courting disaster.advertisementThe wildcard, of course, is actor Vijay. His political start-up, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has drawn early enthusiasts—particularly among the youth—but is electorally untested. And the DMK has its own sunrise sector in Udhayanidhi Stalin, which partly cancels out its edge. Most of all, there's Stalin's helmsmanship. 'Tamil Nadu led the way on federalism,' says Salma, writer and joint secretary, DMK media wing. 'It was here that a strong, clear voice for federal unity was first raised—our CM brought national attention to it, creating awareness and solidarity across other states.'That fed its USP: the heroic profile of a party that offers sharp resistance to the BJP-led Centre, on issues such as NEET (national medical entrance), 'imposition' of Hindi, governor's interference, casting the DMK as a movement still in motion. Seen against that, what are the odds of a TVK slicing off enough votes to allow the AIADMK-BJP to ambush the DMK? Longer than Stalin's full name. Subscribe to India Today MagazineMust Watch

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis slams Rahul Gandhi's match fixing jibe in state polls

Maharashtra Congress in-charge and Kerala congress MLA Ramesh Chennithala said when he assumed charge of Maharashtra in early 2024, the Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi defied the Modi wave in the Lok Sabha elections. He said, the people of Maharashtra stood tall against propaganda and pressure, delivering a decisive verdict that sent the BJP alliance reeling. 'BJP's loss in Maharashtra, along with its poor performance in Uttar Pradesh, was pivotal in preventing it from securing an absolute majority at the national level. And yet, merely six months later, in the Maharashtra state assembly elections, that same Maha Vikas Aghadi — which was poised to win over 170 seats — was reduced to just 50. Is it believable that this staggering turnaround was due to governance or public sentiment? Even the most loyal BJP supporter would hesitate to make such a claim. If Prime Minister Modi himself could not sway Maharashtra, are we to believe that Eknath Shinde, whose politics is marred by betrayal and unprincipled opportunism, could command such a wave,' Congress leader asked. He further said this was not a coincidence. 'It was a calculated and premeditated operation to distort the electoral mandate. Democracy in Maharashtra was not defeated — it was subverted. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Maharashtra had 89.8 million registered voters. By the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, this number rose naturally to 92.9 million — a five-year increase of 3.1 million. However, within just five months, during the 2024 Assembly elections, the voter count inexplicably jumped to 97 million — a sudden spike of 4.1 million in less than half a year. This figure defies logic. Even the official estimate of the adult population in Maharashtra stands at 95.4 million. On polling day, the initial turnout reported was 58.22%. With no reports of long queues or late-night voting, it should have remained roughly constant. Instead, by the next morning, the turnout had miraculously jumped to 66.05% — an overnight addition of over 7.6 million votes, predominantly favouring BJP candidates,' Chennithala added. The Congress leader further went on to say that Rahul Gandhi exposed how Maharashtra, once a proud torchbearer of democratic values has become a cautionary tale of how institutions can be compromised, how power can be snatched instead of earned, and how silence can become complicity. This is no longer about one state or one election. It is about the soul of our democracy. We urge the Election Commission to break its silence. The people of Maharashtra — and of India — deserve answers.

Israeli Military Retrieves Body Of Thai Hostage From Gaza, Defence Minister Says

Jerusalem: The Israeli military has retrieved the body of Thai hostage, Nattapong Pinta, who had been held in Gaza since Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Saturday. Pinta's body was held by a Palestinian group called the Mujahedeen Brigades, and was retrieved from the area of Rafah in southern Gaza, Katz said. His family in Thailand has been notified. Pinta, an agricultural worker, was abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz, a small community near the border, where one in four people was killed or taken hostage during the Hamas-led 2023 attack that triggered the devastating war in Gaza. The Israeli military said Pinta had been abducted alive and killed by his captors, who had also killed and taken to Gaza the bodies of two more Israeli-American hostages that were retrieved this week. There was no immediate comment from Hamas. Hamas killed 1,200 people in Israel in the 2023 attack, Israel's deadliest day, and took 251 hostages, 55 of whom remain in Gaza. Twenty hostages are believed to still be alive, according to Israeli authorities. Israel responded to the Hamas attacks with a military campaign that has killed over 54,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities in the Hamas-run strip, and left much of the enclave in ruins, with a population of more than 2 million people largely displaced.
