Subaru is bringing its rugged Wilderness sub-brand to Australia, but when?

Subaru has offered more rugged Wilderness versions of three of its models in North America for four years, but so far they've never been sold in Australia.
That will change, Subaru Australia has now finally confirmed, but it hasn't said which Wilderness variants will arrive here or when.
'We've confirmed Wilderness will be on Australian soil, what I'm not going to confirm is when and in what model,' Subaru Australia general manager Scott Lawrence told Australian media.
'All I can say is watch this space.'

The North America-only Wilderness nameplate debuted in 2021 on the outgoing Forester and Outback.
Subaru recently revealed Wilderness variants of the new-generation Forester and Outback, which join the Crosstrek Wilderness.
While the outgoing Forester and Outback are offered in Wilderness guise in North America, they've never been sold here despite Subaru Australia having confirmed in 2023 that discussions to bring the line here were 'fairly advanced'.

Wilderness variants bring a combination of mechanical and aesthetic tweaks, aimed at improving the off-road ability of the donor vehicle.
Given Subaru's crossovers typically offer a greater level of off-road ability than crossovers from rival brands, this makes the Wilderness models unique.
While the new-generation Forester Wilderness uses the same naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder boxer petrol engine as regular Foresters, mechanical changes include longer coil springs and shock absorbers to deliver improved ground clearance, stability and comfort.
There's 236mm of ground clearance, up on the standard Forester's 220mm, while the Wilderness rides on 17-inch black alloy wheels wrapped in Yokohama Geolandar all-terrain tyres. Supplied Credit: CarExpert
Approach, departure, and breakover angles have also been improved over the standard Forester. Approach angle has been increased to 23.5 from 19 degrees, departure angle is up from 24.6 to 25.5 degrees, and breakover angle rises from 19.6 to 21 degrees.
The SUV's continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) has been revised with a shorter final drive ratio for improved low-speed off-roading, while there's also an uprated transmission cooler, a rear differential temperature sensor, and a revised all-wheel drive system for 'faster centre differential lockup and reduced wheelspin when off-roading'.
Visual changes include hexagonal LED fog lights, underbody protection, and anodised copper-finish exterior accents, while inside there's water-resistant upholstery and more cooper-finish elements. Supplied Credit: CarExpert
The new-generation Outback Wilderness offers even more ground clearance than the Forester Wilderness, with a figure of 241mm – 20mm more than the standard Outback.
This improves approach, breakover and departure angles to 20, 21.2 and 22.5 degrees respectively.
The Japanese-built SUV will be offered in the US exclusively with a 194kW/376Nm turbocharged 2.4-litre flat four-cylinder petrol engine.

Other visual changes include matte black exterior mirrors and cladding, plus a restyled front bumper, hexagonal fog lights, and various copper-finish exterior accents.
Inside, there's exclusive water-resistant upholstery as well as more copper-finish interior accents.
Finally, there's the Crosstrek Wilderness, which debuted early in 2023.

With 236mm of ground clearance, the Crosstrek Wilderness also has approach, departure and rampover angles of 20, 33 and 21.1 degrees, up from 18, 30.1 and 19.7 degrees respectively.
There are also the requisite design tweaks, including roof racks, copper accents, unique bumpers, chunkier wheel-arch cladding, hexagonal LED fog lights, a matte black anti-glare bonnet decal, and a metal front skid plate.
Inside, to no surprise, there's water-resistant trim and more copper-finish accents.
Unlike the new Outback Wilderness, which is moving to Japanese production, the Crosstrek Wilderness is built exclusively in the US. The new Forester Wilderness thus far hasn't been confirmed for production in Japan, where Subaru Australia sources vehicles from.
Indeed, Subaru Australia sources all its vehicles from Japan, and hasn't imported a vehicle from the US since the Tribeca in 2013.

Even in Standard Output tune it pumps out 313kW and 635Nm, while the High Output tune well and truly blows the Hemi over with 403kW and 707Nm. This makes all Hurricane-powered Ram 1500s much quicker than the V8 vehicles they replaced, while also consuming less petrol. Wanneroo Raceway to host historic 100th Supercars race

The Wanneroo Raceway will make Australian motorsport history this weekend as it hosts its 100th Supercars championship race, the first circuit in the nation to reach the milestone. A field of 26 V8 Supercar drivers and 12 teams will take on the new Super 440 format, a combination of sprint and endurance races over the weekend. After two 30-minute practice sessions on Friday, drivers will face back-to-back qualifying sessions on Saturday before racing two 120km sprints, followed by a 200km refuelling race on Sunday. Treating fans to a thrilling build-up ahead of the main event on Sunday, drivers will compete in a two-part knockout qualifying session and a top-10 shootout to determine their starting positions for the 200km race. Eyeing off a win in front of his home crowd is reigning Bathurst 1000 champion Brodie Kostecki, who is set to race a Ford Mustang GT alongside teammate and veteran Will Davison for Dick Johnson Racing for the first time in Perth this weekend. Kostecki, who is originally from Ballajura, said he's thrilled to return to the Wanneroo raceway, where his passion for racing first started, just like many young racers from Perth's northern suburbs who started out at the Tiger Kart Club. 'It's always a great turnout at the Wanneroo raceway and racing in front of friends and family is always great as well,' he said. Kostecki said he contributed to the design of the recently announced Burswood circuit, which he described as a 'privilege' to be a part of. 'I think it could be great for everyone here in WA,' he said. 'It's going to bring a lot of new people into our sport, and it's going to be right in the heart of Perth city, which is going to be fantastic as well.' Supercars veteran Will Davison said he considered Perth a second home since his wife is from here, and although he has been a 'huge supporter of supporting local motorsport circuits', he also threw his support behind the Burswood circuit plan. 'There's so much going on at street events that are good for the kids, good for the family. There's entertainment everywhere you look,' Davison said. 'Until you sort of feel that around a street track experience, the atmosphere that it creates . . . it's probably impossible to explain it to people.' Ram 1500 revives Hemi V8 as brand fixes "mistake", Australian return unconfirmed

The Ram 1500's new Hurricane twin-turbo inline six may produce more power and torque than the Hemi V8 it replaced, but it doesn't have the same sound. Fret not, though – that distinctive burble is coming back. After dropping it for model year 2025 (MY25), Ram will return the 5.7-litre naturally aspirated V8 to the 1500 lineup for MY26, with vehicles arriving in US dealerships in the northern summer (June to August). Brand CEO Tim Kuniskis, who returned to the top spot late last year, was candid about the Hemi's return. 'Everyone makes mistakes, but how you handle them defines you. Ram screwed up when we dropped the Hemi — we own it and we fixed it,' he said. 'We're not just bringing back a legendary V8 engine, we're igniting an assertive product plan and expanding the freedom of choice in powertrain for our customers.' But there's no guarantee it'll return to the Australian-market 1500 lineup. 'The return of the Hemi V8 is a decision that has been made for the US market. As it stands today, there is no guarantee the Hemi V8 will return to Australian showrooms,' said a Ram Trucks Australia spokesperson. 'As with any development, we will continue to review and evaluate what options are made available to us from the vast Ram catalogue in the US. 'We know there are customers who love the sound of a V8, and the Hemi V8 is still available in our Ram 1500 Big Horn model while stock lasts. 'However, customers have also embraced the new Hurricane twin-turbo in-line six-cylinder engine in our latest Ram 1500 models. 'The Hurricane engine remains an integral part of Ram's future. With more power and torque – and better efficiency – than the previous 5.7-litre Hemi V8, we believe the new Hurricane engine series will over time become iconic in its own right.' Ram Trucks Australia has previously indicated it takes 12-18 months to complete a local engineering program for a new model variant that will be remanufactured locally in right-hand drive. That would make a Hemi V8-equipped 1500 a late 2026 or early 2027 proposition, should it be approved for our market. The 2025 facelift comprised more than just aesthetic tweaks, with other changes including upgraded infotainment, so this isn't as simple as just figuratively flicking a switch. Indeed, Mr Kuniskis had confirmed earlier this year the Hemi was never designed to be offered with the updated 1500's electrical architecture. In the US, the Hemi will be offered across every trim level bar the sporty RHO and luxurious Tungsten, which will be offered exclusively with the High Output version of the Hurricane six. For the Limited and Longhorn, which also come standard with the high-output six, the Hemi will be a no-cost option. Ram has stood behind the new Hurricane engine in the US, which is also used by Jeep and is being rolled out to the Dodge brand this year. 'Ram will continue to offer the more powerful and more efficient Hurricane Straight Six Turbo, but we heard loud and clear from consumers: there is no replacement for the iconic Hemi V8,' said Mr Kuniskis. The return of the Hemi also sees the introduction of a new badge featuring a Ram's head pushing forward, powered by a Hemi V8 engine block. Ram is calling the badge the 'Symbol of Protest'. The Hemi V8 continues to feature cylinder deactivation to help reduce fuel consumption, as well as the eTorque 48V mild-hybrid system which includes idle stop/start and smooths transitions under acceleration and braking. It also enables up to 176Nm of torque to be available on initial throttle tip-in. In total, the Hemi V8 produces 295kW of power and 556Nm of torque. The Hurricane has hardly been downgraded to a tropical storm. Even in Standard Output tune it pumps out 313kW and 635Nm, while the High Output tune well and truly blows the Hemi over with 403kW and 707Nm. This makes all Hurricane-powered Ram 1500s much quicker than the V8 vehicles they replaced, while also consuming less petrol. Currently, all facelifted 2025 Ram 1500s in Australia use these two tunes of the Hurricane; we've never gotten the base naturally aspirated Pentastar V6 offered in low-end versions of the 1500 in North America. While the 5.7-litre has returned, there's no word yet on the return of the supercharged 6.2-litre that powered the defunct TRX. With the move to an all six-cylinder lineup here for the MY25 1500, Ram Trucks Australia ceded V8 power to rival Chevrolet. The Toyota Tundra moved to a six-cylinder lineup globally with its current generation, while Ford doesn't bring V8-powered versions of the F-150 Down Under.
