A$AP Rocky stars as an aspiring rapper in the neo-noir film Highest 2 Lowest, directed by Spike Lee.
A$AP Rocky, born Rakim Athelaston Mayers, is returning to the big screens with the neo-noir thriller, Highest 2 Lowest. And the film's director Spike Lee is all praises for the 36-year-old rapper's impressive acting skills. During his appearance on the July 31 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the 68-year-old filmmaker shared that Rocky goes 'toe-to-toe" with Denzel Washington in the upcoming film.
The legendary Hollywood actor is best known for his roles in films like Cry Freedom, Malcolm X, Man on Fire, Deja Vu, American Gangster, Unstoppable and Gladiator II. 'Don't sleep on A$AP," Lee said during the conversation, highlighting how the rapper held his own while starring in the film when others feel pressured while working with someone as great as Washington.
'I've done five films with Denzel, and a lot of times when he's in a scene with somebody, they just get overwhelmed. He's one of the greatest living actors today, but A$AP wasn't having that," he said, adding, 'Toe-to-toe, I mean, they were going at it."
Spike Lee Reveals Why He Chose A$AP Rocky To Play Denzel Washington's Son
In the same conversation, the director of Highest 2 Lowest also discussed how he always thought that A$AP could play the role of the son of the 70-year-old actor. The Oscar-winning director explained, 'What's interesting is, even before I got involved with this film, I always thought that A$AP looked like he could be Denzel's son. There's a big resemblance. So when you see it on the screen, it adds an element of father and son."
Highest 2 Lowest: Cast And Plot
The neo-noir crime thriller is an English reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 Japanese film High and Low. The latter, in turn, is loosely based on the 1959 novel by Ed McBain, titled King's Ransom. Set in New York City, the film follows the life of an aspiring rapper, Yung Felony, played by A$AP Rocky, who is the son of Denzel Washington's character, David King. He runs a successful record label, called the Stackin Hits, and is the heir of the legendary record producer and composer Quincy Jones.
Besides the two leads, the film features Ice Spice in her debut role, Jeffrey Wright, Michael Potts, Dean Winters, Jensen McRae and John Douglas Thompson, among others.
Highest 2 Lowest is all set to be released theatrically on August 22, and after a limited run on the big screens, the neo-noir thriller will be available for streaming on Apple TV+ from September 5 onwards.

Ranveer Allahbadia SLAMS Bollywood Actors For Boycotting His Show: 'We Never Invited You'

Earlier this year, Ranveer Allahbadia was embroiled in controversy after an episode of India's Got Latent, where he posed an offensive question to a contestant. Following Ranveer Allahbadia's India's Got Latent controversy earlier this year, several Bollywood stars claimed that they had rejected invitations to appear on his show. However, Allahbadia has now revealed a lot of those celebrities were not even invited by his team. In a recent interview, Ranveer, also known as The Beer Biceps, discussed the aftermath of the controversy and admitted that he was 'upset and angry" with such claims made by actors. 'It was a feeding frenzy. Some celebrities claimed that they'd even rejected an invite to the show. The truth is that we never invited them in the first place. In such situations, I felt angry at human beings in general. But I realised that the predicament that I was in was a result of my own actions," Ranveer told Prafful Garg. 'I couldn't change the past, but I could change the future. I got a forced break after a crazy, intense six-year podcasting journey. I'm just trying to move on; I've tried to forgive a lot of people, even myself, and to a degree, I've been successful," the podcaster added. What Was India's Got Latent Controversy? Earlier this year, Allahbadia was embroiled in controversy after an episode of India's Got Latent, where he posed an offensive question to a contestant: 'Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once to make it stop forever?" Though the panel, including Apoorva Mukhija and Ashish Chanchlani, laughed off the comment, it triggered massive backlash online and led to multiple FIRs against Ranveer and the show's makers. The controversy escalated when the National Commission for Women (NCW) stepped in, and Ranveer was forced to submit a written apology. The Supreme Court later granted him interim protection from arrest but called his remarks 'vulgar" and accused him of having a 'dirty mind" that shamed society. However, Ranveer recently made his comeback and re-started his podcasts. Actors like Boman Irani, Shruti Haasan and Tara Sutaria have appeared on his show as guests. While many of them are funny and entertaining, some cross the line and spark controversy. One such trend is the 'Hakla Shah Rukh Khan' meme. Let's take a closer look at what this meme is about and why it has stirred debate online. The meme trend started from a parody of Shah Rukh Khan's iconic stammering in his 'K‑K‑K‑Kiran" dialogue delivery, using 'hakla"—a Hindi term meaning 'stammerer". It features a funny picture or GIF of Superstar Shah Rukh Khan with an exaggerated hairstyle, like a mohawk or pigtails—illustrating awkward hesitation or speech. While the meme dates back almost a decade, it has recently caught netizens' eyes when reels and GIFs resurged across platforms like Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube Shorts. The 'Hakla Meme' Controversy Fact Check- The 'Hakla Shah Rukh Khan Meme' Fine While there have been reports of the fine being charged, reports and the law say that these claims are not true. There is no specific Indian cyber law that imposes an Rs 3 lakh fine or a 2-year jail term for posting the 'Hakla" GIF. While social media platforms may remove such content under their anti-bullying policies, no official government regulation currently enforces such penalties. However, general hate speech provisions exist—such as Karnataka's draft bill, which proposes up to 3 years in jail and a Rs 5,000 fine—they do not specifically address this meme. Additionally, there has been no official statement from the Cyber Cell regarding this issue. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
