River Plate ease past Urawa to start Club World Cup tilt

River Plate's Argentine midfielder Maximiliano Meza headed home his team's third goal from a corner (JUAN MABROMATA) River Plate overcame a spirited Urawa Red Diamonds 3-1 on Tuesday to make a strong start in Club World Cup Group E. The Argentine side overpowered their Japanese opponents at Lumen Field under the Seattle sun, in an entertaining battle. Advertisement Under 12,000 fans attended the clash at the 69,000-capacity stadium but those who were there, many travelling from Japan and Argentina, created a vibrant atmosphere at both ends of the stadium. Marcelo Gallardo's River started the stronger and took the lead when striker Facundo Colidio powered a header home from former Sevilla defender Marcos Acuna's cross. The Red Diamonds played their way into the match and River goalkeeper Franco Armani was forced into an excellent save from Yusuke Matsuo, although he was offside. New Real Madrid signing Franco Mastantuono almost created a second for River, with the 17-year-old teeing up Nacho Fernandez, but the midfielder's drive flew narrowly off target. Advertisement The Argentine, who will join Spanish giants Madrid after the tournament, was otherwise quieter than expected. The Red Diamonds, who won the Asian Champions League in 2022 to qualify as the only Japanese team at the tournament, came undone at the start of the second half. Marius Hoibraaten sent a foolish back-header towards goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa, without noticing Sebastian Driussi sneaking in behind. The striker bravely nodded home past the helpless stopper but hurt himself as he fell and had to be replaced. Matsuo pulled the Red Diamonds back into the game from the penalty spot after Acuna's ungainly mistimed barge on Takuro Kaneko, sending Armani the wrong way. More Han Myung-Gu/Getty Images How to Watch Ulsan Hyundai vs Mamelodi Sundowns Date: Tuesday, June 17, 2025 Time: 6:00 PM ET Stream: DAZN (WATCH FOR FREE) Ulsan Hyundai and Mamelodi Sundowns will take the pitch on Tuesday, June 17th, at Inter&Co Stadium in this FIFA Club World Cup match. Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense kicked off Group F play with a draw, opening the door for a potential winner of this match to move into first in the standings. With the other two clubs representing strong competition, a loss by either club would be detrimental to their chances of advancing out of the group. Uslan has the experience on their side, having made the FIFA Club World Cup three times, but Mamelodi has the offensive star power to make this an explosive affair. Iqraam Rayners and Lucas Ribeiro of Mamelodi have both scored at least 20 goals this season, and Uslan will have to find a way to limit the damage, while also finding the back of the net on the opposing side of the field. This is a great Club World Cup matchup; make sure to tune in and catch all the action.
