13-year-old boy dies in horrific accident when he hit a cable across a yard while riding an e-bike
The community of Everett, Washington, is mourning the tragic loss of a 13-year-old boy who died days after riding into a metal cable while on an e-bike.
Emiliano Munoz was riding the bike around 4:30 p.m. on May 2 when he struck a braided cable between a fence post and traffic bollard that fenced his family's yard.
Police say they arrived at the scene three minutes after the call to dispatch and transported Munoz to Harborview Medical Center, where he died May 5 from his injuries.
A GoFundMe fundraiser created for Muonz's medical and funeral expenses states the teenager suffered severe head trauma from the crash.
'He was a beloved student at Explorer Middle School, known for his warm spirit and kind smile. He was a true friend to many & will never be forgotten,' organizer Katharine Montiel wrote.
The cable, which Montiel described as 'dangerously placed,' has been removed, police say. Friends and family have made the site a memorial, with photos, candles and balloons for Munoz.
Neighbors told local news station KING5 that the cable fence, installed a few years ago along the property's front yard, was connected to yellow bollards to prevent cars from cutting across the lawn after making wrong turns.
'It was to stop people from driving on their lawn," Nick Hughes, a nextdoor neighbor, told the outlet. "I don't know if it was the neighbors that put it up. It never crossed my mind there'd be an issue.'
The Independent has contacted Everett PD for comment.
KING5 also spoke to middle and grade school-aged kids who visited Munoz's memorial site before his funeral.
'I really miss him," Jonathan Losoda said. "We played together. We used to ride bikes and now he's up there. He liked especially blue Takis because I like it, and he always shared it. I miss everything about him.'
Losoda continued, 'If he was still here, I just want to say to him, I'm super proud of him and that I miss him and that he was a good friend.'
This incident is under investigation.

WASHINGTON, June 9 (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department's team dedicated to investigating allegations of foreign bribery has dwindled as President Donald Trump's administration reviews its enforcement of a decades-old law aimed at preventing corruption, according to three people familiar with the matter. The DOJ's Fraud Section unit tasked with enforcing the anti-bribery law has shrunk to about 15 prosecutors, according to two of the sources. That number is down from 32 as of a January report published on the department's website. The cuts follow Trump's executive order in February calling for a pause in enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, a 1977 law that prohibits companies that operate in the U.S. from bribing foreign officials and has become a cornerstone of federal efforts to combat corruption. A spokesperson for the Justice Department declined to comment. The DOJ launched a 180-day review of its enforcement of the FCPA following Trump's order, which kicked off an exodus of staff from the unit. Prosecutors largely moved elsewhere in the Justice Department's Criminal Division, including its Healthcare and Marketplace Fraud units, two of the sources said. New guidance on how prosecutors are to handle FCPA cases is being drafted and expected to be released soon, one of the sources said. Attorney General Pam Bondi in February directed foreign bribery prosecutors to prioritize cases related to drug cartels, a Trump administration emphasis that has not traditionally been a focus of the unit. A memo from the Criminal Division last month listed foreign bribery below issues such as fraud in government programs and tariff evasion as corporate enforcement priorities for the Trump administration. The DOJ has been scaling back its enforcement against white-collar crimes and focusing on different types of cases. It has also dropped other initiatives aimed at preventing corruption.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, police closed off the scene and remained in attendance outside the pub on Monday. A property on nearby Warbeck Road has also been sealed off. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Ibrahima's family by Dawn Frimpong. She wrote: "I had the honour of working with this young man, in a school, where he was very well loved. "He was a beautiful soul who had the most infectious smile and you couldn't help but laugh with him. He will be missed by so many. I am attempting to raise as much money as possible for Ibrahima's family so they are not worrying about financial burden at this very difficult time. "We must stand together as communities in times like this and offer support no matter how big or small. Any contribution would be very greatly received." Miss Whittaker told the M.E.N. she taught Ibrahima at Manchester Community Primary Academy for two years. "Ibrahima was the most beautiful boy," she said. "He touched my soul and he had such a beautiful heart. I'm devastated beyond words." A neighbour of Ibrahima's, who did not want to be named, told our sister title that he was the youngest of three siblings. She said: 'He was so young, it's so very, very sad. I cannot understand what this country is coming to.' The woman said the family had lived on her street, a short distance from the Fairway Inn, for a 'couple of years' and she spoke to Ibrahima's parents as neighbours. 'I heard about it last night' she added. 'I heard the helicopter last night then I read about it on the news. Then a police car pulled up and they went inside. That's when we knew. "Another neighbour who knows the family very well said it was the youngest one. I felt sick. So very, very sick. I just couldn't believe that had happened to a family like that. It's so sad, bless them. There's not much we can, just offer our condolences and be there if they need anything.' Tributes have also been left at the scene where Ibrahima was attacked, alongside flowers and messages of support for his family. One note said: "From one mother to another, I know there are no words that can ever ease your pain. "But I pray God gives you the strength to face each new day. Please know that as a community we hold your family in our hearts." Another said: "Things need to change! Knives down, gloves up! Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this horrific time. The boy's family are being supported by our officers and we are determined to give them the answers they deserve.
