Ludhiana bypoll: Cong's Ashu's campaign ends with roadshow; sans Punjab chief Warring, LoP Bajwa

Indian Express5 hours ago

The rift between Congress's candidate for Ludhiana West bypoll Bharat Bhushan Ashu and Punjab Congress president cum Ludhiana Lok Sabha MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring was once again visible Tuesday, as the campaigning for the bypoll drew to an end.
Ashu concluded his campaign with a roadshow in the city, but Warring and leader of opposition in Vidhan Sabha Partap Singh Bajwa were nowhere to be seen. The party's district president (urban) and former Ludhiana East MLA Sanjay Talwar was also absent from Ashu's concluding roadshow.
However, those who led the show with Ashu included AICC Punjab affairs incharge Bhupendra Baghel, former Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi, former minister Vijay Inder Singla, MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh among others.
A press release issued by Ashu's team claimed that Warring was present at the roadshow. However, he was nowhere seen in the photos. Contacted, Warring said: 'I was not present at the roadshow today due to some personal work. I was in Ludhiana but did not attend the roadshow. I have no idea why my name has been written in the press release claiming I attended it.'
However, sources close to Warring said that he was upset over not being invited to the roadshow and hence decided to maintain a distance. The source further said that a day ago on Monday, when Warring along with Baghel and Bajwa had addressed a press conference in the city, Ashu chose to skip it and did not attend, which upsetted Warring. 'Even the photos of Warring and other local leaders were missing from the roadshow's invitation which were sent yesterday,' said the source.
So even as Warring was present in Ludhiana Tuesday, he skipped Ashu's roadshow. Later in a Facebook post, he uploaded his photos while meeting and having lunch with Baghel, Talwar and former MLAs Kuldip Vaid and Surinder Dawar– the local faces who were missing from Ashu's roadshow.
Meanwhile, Ashu asked his workers and supporters to be alert and careful during these two crucial days. He said the ruling AAP will try its level best to use all unfair means to influence voters. 'Whenever any such thing comes to your notice, sound the team in the office and we will take care and will not allow any such thing to happen', he said.
Ashu, who is also the party's co-working president, appealed to the people of Ludhiana West to participate in the festival of democracy wholeheartedly by coming out of their homes to cast their vote. 'The process will complete once you press the button on the EVM to elect your representative', he told them, while asserting that every vote will count at the end.
'The choice is between a commoner and a billionaire,' said Ashu, hitting at the AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora.

Locals demand scientific retaining wall after repeated floods in Karnataka's Jeppinamogaru; incomplete drain work, poor desilting blamed

MANGALURU: The Jeppinamogaru Congress Ward Committee and local residents have urged the immediate construction of a scientific retaining wall to prevent recurring floods in the area. Addressing reporters on Wednesday, Congress Ward President Sudhakar J said that recent heavy rains led to the collapse of a protective embankment, resulting in widespread flooding and property damage in areas such as Thochila, Nagallu, Ganeshnagara, Hoigerashi, Vaidyanathanagara, Bajehithalu, and Angadimaru. Sudhakar noted that continuous rainfall over the past 20–25 days caused the rajakaluve, which flows through Jeppinamogaru via Kankanady Pumpwell and Ekkur, to overflow. At the Nagallu Urundetota stretch, a 25-metre-long retaining wall was completely washed away, leaving the area inundated. 'In just the last 15 days, the locality flooded at least three to four times, severely disrupting daily life,' he said. He recalled that a permanent retaining wall construction was initiated by former Zilla Panchayat member Denis D'Souza and then-MLA K Jayaram Shetty, with funding support from former MP B Janardhan Poojary. Though the Smart City Project later earmarked a substantial budget for a fully concretised wall, only one side of the drain was completed. The remaining 75 metres near Aakash Kattapuni's house was left unfinished, relying on an old mud embankment, which eventually gave way during the floods. Former corporator Nagendra alleged serious lapses in desilting operations, which were meant to be conducted during March–April. Key stretches near the national highway, a private school, Vaidyanatha Dwara, and Kadekar were ignored, he said. After the downpour in late May, local youths placed sandbags to prevent further damage. He accused former corporators and the sitting MLA of failing to act on public concerns and putting lives at risk .

No 'compulsion' to learn Hindi as third language: Devendra Fadnavis on row over Maharashtra Government Order

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) said the "compulsion" for students in the State to learn Hindi has been removed in a new Order, and now any Indian language can be chosen as the third language. While English is widely promoted, Indian languages are often neglected, Mr. Fadnavis told reporters in Dehu and maintained that disputes over languages are unnecessary. The State Government on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) issued an Order saying Hindi will "generally" be taught as the third language to students in Marathi and English medium schools from Classes I to V. The amended Government Resolution (GR) said Hindi will "generally" be the third language, instead of being mandatory, and gave an option to opt out if 20 students per grade in a school express the desire to study any Indian language other than Hindi. Some pro-Marathi outfits accused the government of reintroducing the policy through the "backdoor" after initially backtracking, and the opposition Congress accused the government of "stabbing" the Marathi people in the chest. MNS head Raj Thackeray asked what was the need to "impose" Hindi on students and appealed to schools in the State to foil the government's "hidden agenda to deliberately create a language divide." 'Hindi is the State language of some northern States and it is wrong to force it on Maharashtra, where Marathi is widely used,' he asserted. Mr. Fadnavis said the GR clearly states that Marathi is compulsory, while Hindi is optional. "We had earlier made Hindi compulsory, but in the GR issued yesterday, that compulsion has been removed. As per the new GR, students can opt for any third Indian language," the CM said. The three-language formula was proposed in the New Education Policy (NEP). According to the policy, the mother tongue is mandatory, and apart from that, students will learn two other languages, one of which should be an Indian language, he said. "Naturally, many people choose English as one of the three languages," Mr. Fadnavis said. He said that earlier, Hindi was proposed as the third language because its teachers are available in good numbers. "We have now removed that rule. Any Indian language can be chosen as the third language. If there are at least 20 students, a teacher will be made available. If necessary, online education will also be facilitated," the CM said. He said while everyone promotes English, Indian languages are often neglected, which is not appropriate. "Indian languages are better than English. I understand that English is a language of communication, but because of the NEP, Marathi has become a language of knowledge. We have started teaching engineering in Marathi, something that wasn't done earlier," Mr. Fadnavis said. "Our doctors are now receiving education in Marathi. MBA (course) is also being taught in Marathi. Because of the NEP, Marathi is becoming a global language, a language of knowledge and economics, and the Maharashtra Government has adopted this move. I believe such disputes over languages are unnecessary," he said. On Raj Thackeray's opposition to the new order, Mr. Fadnavis said he has already spoken to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) head. "He [Thackeray] is insisting that only two languages should be taught and a third language should not be imposed. I tried to explain that the Centre, after a lot of deliberations, introduced the three-language formula in the NEP," the CM said. "If the entire country is following the three-language formula, Maharashtra cannot adopt a two-language system," he said. Tamil Nadu (Government) had approached the court over the three-language formula, but it did not accept their plea, Mr. Fadnavis pointed out. "I want to ask, what is the harm in learning any third Indian language?" the Chief Minister said. "The NEP was formulated after thorough deliberations by experts across the country. While working on the NEP, the cognitive power of children, how to develop their mental capabilities and all these things were taken into consideration," he said.

Ludhiana West bypoll: Prestige at stake for AAP, Congress

The Ludhiana West bypoll on Thursday will be a litmus test for the ruling AAP as it seeks to maintain its hold over Punjab, while the Congress looks to regain its foothold over the urban constituency which it held for six times in the past. While the main contest is between the AAP and Congress, the bypoll outcome will also shed light on how the BJP performs among urban voters in Punjab. The bypoll is also going to be a test of the leadership of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal as his party looks to resurrect itself after a series of crushing electoral losses. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like San Juan Unsold Cars In 2024 Are Almost Donated. The Ludhiana West assembly seat fell vacant following the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January. Live Events There are a total of 14 candidates in the fray for the by-election. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party has fielded Rajya Sabha member Sanjeev Arora for the bypoll. Arora (61) is a Ludhiana-based industrialist and is also known for his social welfare work. He runs the Krishna Pran Breast Cancer Charitable Trust. Arora has been a member of the Rajya Sabha since 2022. The opposition Congress has placed its bet on former minister and Punjab Congress working president Bharat Bhushan Ashu (51). Ashu served as MLA twice from this seat in 2012 and 2017. He was defeated by Gogi by a margin of 7,512 votes in the 2022 Punjab assembly polls. Ashu was food and civil supplies minister in the previous Congress regime. The BJP has field senior leader Jiwan Gupta. He is a member of the core committee of Punjab BJP. He was earlier the party's state general secretary. The SAD named Parupkar Singh Ghuman as its candidate for the bypoll. Ghuman is a lawyer and the former president of Ludhiana bar association. The Ludhiana West bypoll is seen as a litmus test for Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the ruling party's national leadership which aggressively campaigned to retain this seat. The bypoll is important as its outcome will throw light on the popularity of the AAP regime's policies and programmes among urban voters in the constituency. In November last year, the AAP had won three out of four assembly bypolls. Prior to that the party had party faced a drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls in which it could win only three of 13 parliamentary constituencies. The AAP leadership urged voters to vote for Arora with party supremo Arvind Kejriwal announcing that the AAP candidate will be made the cabinet minister if he is elected in the bypoll. Mann described the election as a battle between "humility" and "arrogance" while highlighting that Arora represents "simplicity" while the Congress nominee is known for "arrogance." Kejriwal lauded Arora for his philanthropic efforts and assured the public that with Arora's election, Ludhiana West would witness "unparalleled development." Stakes are also high for the Congress as it would want to wrest the seat, which it had won six times in the past. Punjab Congress leaders, including party's general secretary in-charge Punjab and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, former Chief Minister and MP Charanjit Singh Channi, Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla, MLAs Rana Gurjit Singh, and Pargat Singh campaigned for Ashu. While Ashu reminded voters of the previous record of development in the constituency, he said that his electoral fight was not against Arora, but Kejriwal, who was allegedly fighting for his own backdoor entry to Rajya Sabha from Punjab. Prestige is at stake for the BJP in the bypoll as well. Leaders, including Union Ministers Hardeep Singh Puri, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, BJP leader Tarun Chugh, canvassed for Gupta. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, BJP's Ravneet Singh Bittu had led from the Ludhiana West assembly segment, which is part of the Ludhiana parliamentary seat. However, he lost to Congress nominee Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. In the 117-member Punjab assembly, the AAP has 94 legislators, the Congress has 16 MLAs, Shiromani Akali Dal has three, BJP two, and the Bahujan Samaj Party one. One seat is held by an Independent. Campaigning for the high-stakes by-election ended on Tuesday evening. A total of 1,75,469 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise, 85,371 of them women and 10 of third gender. There will be a total of 194 polling stations for the bypoll and 100 percent live webcasting of polling stations, officials said. The voting process will be monitored in real-time from the integrated command control centre located at the district administrative complex. As many as 235 CCTV cameras have been installed at polling stations, said officials. Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer Himanshu Jain said all necessary arrangements have been made for the bypoll and appealed to voters to come out in large numbers to exercise their right to vote on Thursday. The DEO said the Election Commission has allowed use of electoral photo identity card and 12 alternative identity documents like passport, driving license, PAN card for voters to cast their votes.
