Locals demand scientific retaining wall after repeated floods in Karnataka's Jeppinamogaru; incomplete drain work, poor desilting blamed
MANGALURU: The Jeppinamogaru Congress Ward Committee and local residents have urged the immediate construction of a scientific retaining wall to prevent recurring floods in the area.
Addressing reporters on Wednesday, Congress Ward President Sudhakar J said that recent heavy rains led to the collapse of a protective embankment, resulting in widespread flooding and property damage in areas such as Thochila, Nagallu, Ganeshnagara, Hoigerashi, Vaidyanathanagara, Bajehithalu, and Angadimaru.

noted that continuous rainfall over the past 20–25 days caused the rajakaluve, which flows through Jeppinamogaru via Kankanady Pumpwell and Ekkur, to overflow.
At the Nagallu Urundetota stretch, a 25-metre-long retaining wall was completely washed away, leaving the area inundated.
'In just the last 15 days, the locality flooded at least three to four times, severely disrupting daily life,' he said.
He recalled that a permanent retaining wall construction was initiated by former Zilla Panchayat member Denis D'Souza and then-MLA K Jayaram Shetty, with funding support from former MP B Janardhan Poojary.
Though the Smart City Project later earmarked a substantial budget for a fully concretised wall, only one side of the drain was completed. The remaining 75 metres near Aakash Kattapuni's house was left unfinished, relying on an old mud embankment, which eventually gave way during the floods.
Former corporator Nagendra alleged serious lapses in desilting operations, which were meant to be conducted during March–April. Key stretches near the national highway, a private school, Vaidyanatha Dwara, and Kadekar were ignored, he said. After the downpour in late May, local youths placed sandbags to prevent further damage.
He accused former corporators and the sitting MLA of failing to act on public concerns and putting lives at risk .

Bhatti launches 1912 electricity ambulance service in Khammam
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has said that the 1912 Electricity Ambulances, manned by emergency response team personnel, have been deployed to attend to power supply interruptions promptly, on the lines of 108 medical emergency services. Consumers can dial 1912 from anywhere if there is a power issue to avail the services of the electricity ambulances equipped with ladder, electric cables and requisite tools. This service is available across the State, he noted. Mr. Vikramarka, who holds the portfolios of Energy and Finance, launched the 1912 electricity ambulance service of the Northern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGNPDCL) and inaugurated a health camp for electricity department staff in Khammam on Wednesday. He also inaugurated a sub-station real-time feeder monitoring system and fault passage indicators at the electricity sub-station at Janakipuram in Bonakal mandal. He said that all power projects in the State, including the first to seventh phases of the Kothagudem Thermal Power Station (KTPS), were initiated and completed under Congress rule. In contrast, not a single unit of electricity was added during the 10-year rule of BRS, he said, pointing out that though some projects were started, none were completed. 'During TRS rule, the demand in March 2023 was 15,000 MW, but under Congress rule, it rose to 17,162 MW by March 2025,' he added. Despite the surge in demand, uninterrupted power supply was maintained, he said, appreciating the electricity staff for providing quality services round-the-clock even during midnight and floods. Telangana will require 26,299 MW by 2029-30 and 33,773 MW by 2034-35, he said, quoting a Central government agency's report. The State government is already preparing estimates to double power generation to meet the future demand. The new Green Energy Policy envisages production of 20,000 MW of green energy by 2029-30, he noted. He emphasised that government is currently supplying free electricity to 29,000 agricultural pump sets on 24/7 basis and providing free electricity to eligible households up to 200 units benefiting over 50.71 lakh poor families. The government is spending ₹11,500 crore annually on behalf of farmers and paying ₹2,293 crore to power utilities for free electricity scheme up to 200 units. Later, the Deputy Chief Minister, along with Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, laid the foundation stone for a new bus stand in Madhira town at an estimated cost of ₹10 crore.

IndiGo flight faces technical glitch at Raipur airport, passengers including former CM, mayor stuck for 40 minutes
Representative image RAIPUR: An IndiGo flight from Delhi to Raipur encountered a technical fault on Wednesday, causing panic and distress among passengers as they were unable to exit the aircraft for nearly 40 minutes after landing at Swami Vivekananda Airport. The door of the flight, which had safely touched down at Raipur Airport, couldn't be opened due to technical malfunction, leaving the passengers trapped inside. The flight landed on time at 2.25 pm but couldn't disembark passengers due to malfunction. Among the passengers were prominent figures such as former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Congress MLA Chaturi Nand, and Raipur Mayor Meenal Chaubey, who were all aboard the flight. The delayed door opening led to a moment of panic for some passengers, who grew anxious as the minutes passed, Meenal Choubey told TOI. She said that the cabin crew informed the passengers that the monitor had not received the command to open the door connected to the aero-bridge. TOI spoke to the IndiGo spokesperson in New Delhi who said, 'IndiGo flight 6E 6313, operating from Delhi to Raipur, experienced a delay in opening the aircraft door upon arrival on June 18, 2025, due to a minor technical issue. Following standard safety procedures, the door was opened after necessary checks were completed.' 'We sincerely regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate our customers' patience and understanding. At IndiGo, passenger safety and adherence to protocol remain our highest priorities,' the spokesperson said. Congress MLA Chaturi Nand, who was traveling with her husband, shared her experience of the incident. She explained that after the flight landed in Raipur, the door failed to open due to technical difficulties. Her husband, along with other passengers, became quite anxious during the delay. She also highlighted the heightened anxiety, stating that many passengers were on edge following the recent Air India incident in Ahmedabad. 'People were a little scared, especially after the Ahmedabad accident, which added to the tension inside the flight,' said the MLA.
