A's Drop Finale To Rays 8-2

Yahoo2 days ago
Not a great way to end the series. The A's dropped their finale against Tampa Bay, getting hit in the teeth by the Rays in a 8-2 contest to wrap up the series with the Rays, who split the season-series with three wins and three losses apiece.
Rays ambush Ginn
On the mound for the Athletics this evening was rookie right-hander JT Ginn, who was making just his ninth start of the season (and 15th of his young career). Tonight was not his night. Tampa jumped all over Ginn right from the get-go, scoring four times in the first inning to jump out to an intimidating early lead. A pair of errors didn't help Ginn by any means but the Rays added on two more runs in the very next inning when second baseman Brandon Lowe hit a 2-run homer run. That extended the Tampa lead to 6-0 and the A's had only hit once. While he'd finish the frame, Ginn was done after just two innings, condemning the bullpen to a long night.
JT Ginn: 2 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 70 pitches
Not a great outing from the rookie righty. He was just not feeling himself this evening, and who could blame him? The rookie is pitching in a minor league stadium that acts as a bandbox and it was an extremely warm night where the ball was just flying off the bats, at least for the road team. Ginn just didn't show up ready for tonight's game, but hopefully he'll right the ship next time out. He's currently lined up to face the Twins exactly one week from tonight, though we'll see if he ends up making that start or if the club decides to turn to another arm.
A's stunted by Rasmussen
On the other side of things, Rays starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen, a Cy Young contender this year, was in absolute control of the game for his squad from the jump. Gifted a massive early lead, he sat down the first six batters he faced tonight before making a mistake to Lawrence Butler, who led off the bottom of the third going the other way for his 16th homer of the season:
He's now just 4 homers away from joining Nick Kurtz, Shea Langeliers, Brent Rooker, and Tyler Soderstrom as 20-homer hitters on the current club. That'd be the first time since 2019 when the club had six hitters cross that threshold. Nice little offensive core to build around right there, wouldn't you say?
That solo blast didn't open the flood gates like A's fans hoped. The club added on another run in the fifth off a Gio Urshela RBI single…
… but that would be all the scoring the Athletics could muster tonight. After the Urshela single the A's only collected one more hit the entire night, a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth off the bat of Tyler Soderstrom. He of course was stranded and the game ended with a strikeout of rookie outfielder Colby Thomas, the team's 13th punchout of the evening.
Bullpen gives a chance for a comeback
After Ginn's short start the A's needed to piece together seven more innings. Starter-turned-reliever Hogan Harris took over after Ginn and looked strong, tossing three innings while allowing just one run. Could he get a start or two here down the final stretch of the season? After Harris came scoreless appearances from Ben Bowden (1 IP), Michael Kelly (1 IP), Sean Newcomb (1 IP), and then rookie Elvis Alvarado allowed a pair of runs in the ninth to really put a stink on the final score for the A's. When all was said and done the A's had secured the series defeat and their 69th loss of the season.
Not a good game all around. Butler had a nice swing on a pitch from an ace-level pitcher. And the veteran Urshela still has something left in the tank. But Ginn was hit early and hit hard and didn't inspire much confidence going into his supposed next start. At least the bullpen held together for the most part!
We get an off-day tomorrow before picking up the homestand with three weekend games hosting the Los Angeles Angels for the final time in Sacramento this year. For Los Angeles, they'll go with lefty veteran Yusei Kikuchi for the series opener. He's posted a terrific 3.37 ERA across 25 starts this year, both of which lead the Halos' pitching staff. The A's meanwhile have yet to announce their starter so we'll keep you and the rest of our readers apprised on when we find out who will be taking the ball on Friday night.

Thompson eclipses Lyles and Hodgkinson makes stellar comeback

Kishane Thompson eclipsed Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles at the Silesia Diamond League meet on Saturday and Keely Hodgkinson made an impressive comeback over 800m a year since winning gold at the Paris Games. A host of world and Olympic champions headlined by the likes of Karsten Warholm -- with an incredible performance in the 400m hurdles -- Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis, Faith Kipyegon and Femke Bol shone in hot and humid conditions in front of more than 40,000 fans in the Polish city of Chorzow. In their first meeting since Lyles won Olympic gold by just five-thousandths of a second in Paris last year, Thompson made an electric start and led from gun to tape for victory in 9.87sec. "My job is to get the job done," said Thompson. "I enjoyed competition against Noah today... nobody is perfect, but I am working on improving my strengths and improving on my weaknesses. "Paris last year was a big learning factor. I learned it is me against myself." Lyles had to be content with second in 9.90sec as the athletes fine-tune preparations for the September 13-21 world championships in Tokyo. "It makes me really excited for not only today, but also for next week and Tokyo," the American said. "The more I run, the better I am getting. I get more excited each day and it is working. I need to keep competing." There was a timely return for Hodgkinson as the 23-year-old Briton showed no sign of the lingering hamstring problems that had sidelined her for months as she clocked 1min 54.74sec, the fastest in the world this year. "I was just happy to step on the track after more than a year," Hodgkinson said. "I planned to run a fast time because I don't have five races anymore before Tokyo, I only have today and the meeting in Lausanne next week. So it had to be fast and I'm happy that it worked." Kenya's serial world record breaker Kipyegon missed out on the long-standing world record in the women's 3,000m. Six weeks after improving her own world 1,500m record in Eugene, Kipyegon clocked 8:07.04 over the non-Olympic distance, falling just short of the 8:06.11 world record set by China's Wang Junxia in 1993. "I am so happy. I wanted to run a longer distance," Kipyegon said. "It is all about Tokyo now, but Tokyo is a championship race, so anything can happen!" - Blistering Warholm - Warholm looked in astonishing form in the 400m hurdles after a two-month training block at home in Norway, timing a world-leading time of 46.28sec. It was the third fastest time ever run over the distance, topped only by the Norwegian's own world record of 46.28sec and American Rai Benjamin's 46.19sec. "That race was great! I had great rhythm and speed throughout," said Warholm. Dutch star Femke Bol comfortably extended her six-race win streak in the women's 400m hurdles this year with victory in 51.91sec -- another world-leading time. Duplantis, fresh from setting his 13th pole vault world record with 6.29m in Budapest on Tuesday, failed to hit those heights but secured victory in 6.10m, having failed three attempts at 6.20. World leader Melissa Jefferson-Wooden equalled Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce's meet record when she clocked 10.66sec for an impressive victory in the women's 100m. World champion Sha'Carri Richardson could only finish sixth after a troubled few weeks following her arrest for a violent altercation with her partner. Jamaica's two-time world champion Shericka Jackson claimed the honours in the 200m in 22.17sec as she powers back to form. Cordell Tinch left it late, but the in-form American powered past three-time world champion Grant Holloway for a third victory this season in the 110m hurdles in 13.03sec. Olympic champion Masai Russell came out on top of a stacked field in the 100m hurdles in a Diamond League record of 12.19sec ahead of American teammate Tonea Marshall. "This win is very important to me becaue these are the women I'm going to be racing against at the world champs," said Russell. Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic edged Bahrain's Salwa Eid Naser for victory in 49.18sec in the women's 400m and Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay outpaced Kenya's Beatrice Chebet for the win in the women's 1500m in 3:50.62. lp/gj

The 2025 Little League World Series is officially off and running. Eight teams continue their quest to win it all in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on Friday in the annual summer tournament. A new winner will be crowned in 2025, too, after last year's champion, Lake Mary, Florida, was eliminated in the regional round. Which teams will prevail and remain in the winner's bracket? Catch up on all of the action below. Saturday's Little League World Series schedule Here's what's coming up on Saturday: Australia (0-1) vs. Czechia (0-1) at 10 a.m. ET Texas (0-1) vs. Massachusetts (0-1) at 3 p.m. ET Puerto Rico (0-1) vs. Mexico (0-1) at 5 p.m. ET Pennsylvania (0-1) vs. Illinois (0-1) at 7 p.m. ET Little League World Series format In case you need a refresher, the 2025 Little League World Series will feature a total of 20 teams: 10 from the United States and 10 international clubs. Those teams will compete in a modified double-elimination tournament. Play began Wednesday, Aug. 13, with the winners advancing and remaining in the winners' portion of the bracket. Starting Saturday, Aug. 16, the teams that lost their first games will face off to determine which teams remain in the event. Once a team loses twice, it is eliminated. That changes once the championships begin. The U.S. championship game and the international championship game will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, and will both be single-elimination games. The same thing will be true for the LLWS championship game. That creates a scenario in which a team could be eliminated from the event with just one loss. Games will last six innings. If a game is tied after six innings, both teams will play the seventh inning as normal, with no ghost runners on base. If a game extends past the seventh inning, a runner will open each inning on second base. Cleveland Browns Dealt Troubling Shedeur Sanders Blow on Wednesday

Cleveland Browns Dealt Troubling Shedeur Sanders Blow on Wednesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After being projected as a potential top five pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, former Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders fell to the fifth round where the Cleveland Browns selected him with the No. 144 pick. The son of Deion Sanders now finds himself in a quarterback battle with fourth other signal callers and is hoping to take advantage of every rep he gets. Sanders, 23, got the starting nod in the team's preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers, leading the team to a 30-10 victory. Despite minimal reps with the ones, Sanders was able to shine, completing 14-of-23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. While many assumed this would be enough to move him up the depth chart past fellow rookie, Dillon Gabriel who the Browns drafted in the third round, Sanders still finds himself at the bottom of the depth chart. As if he didn't already have an uphill journey to earn a starting or even backup role, Sanders was hit with untimely news on Wednesday. Shedeur Sanders Suffers Setback As reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, Sanders suffered an oblique injury during the team's Wednesday practice. "Browns QB Shedeur Sanders suffered an oblique injury while throwing during the early portion of practice today, and was held out for the rest of the session," wrote Schefter. Although this explains why Sanders didn't receive a single rep in the team's joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles, it certainly could not come at a worse time. Shedeur Sanders Was In Line to Start Second Preseason Game The development comes about an hour after head coach Kevin Stefanski announced that Sanders would start the team's Saturday preseason game against the Eagles if Gabriel and Pickett were unable to play. This is the second injury of the preseason for Sanders who also dealt with an arm injury last week. If he is unable to practice or play, his chances of working his way of the depth chart will take a huge hit. Now, it's entirely possible he was held out for precautionary reasons and may be able to play on Saturday, but any reps missed are a missed story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 13, 2025, where it first appeared.
