How ‘Overcompensating' cast one of its writers as its co-lead
Overcompensating is a new Prime Video series created by and starring Benito Skinner, who rose to fame on social media as Benny Drama. Casting director Jessica Kelly was not familiar with Benny Drama when the project came her way. Luckily, someone else in her life very much was.
"My sister is 14 years younger than me and she was constantly talking about this guy, Benny, on Instagram and his best friend, Mary Beth [Barone]. And I was like, 'OK, OK, OK,'" Kelly tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Casting Directors panel. "And then I was like, 'They seem cute,' but never really looked at it. And I had seen Mary Beth actually more — her stand-up would show up on my feed. And then I got this email about his new show and then I was like, 'My God, I'm going to be the coolest older sister ever.'"

The comedy series, which drops all eight episodes on May 15, stars Skinner as Benny, a closeted college freshman who becomes friends with Carmen (Wally Baram), an outsider, on the first day. Barone plays Grace, Benny's older sister who attends the same college and dates another student, Peter (Adam DiMarco). Rish Shah plays Miles, a film student to whom Benny is attracted.
The Benny-Carmen friendship is the central relationship of the series, so nailing the Carmen casting was paramount. Kelly estimates they received more than 6,000 submissions for Carmen. Baram initially joined Overcompensating as a writer — her past writing credits include What We Do in the Shadows and Shrinking — before Skinner suggested her for Carmen.
"While he was in the writing room, you know, creating these characters with him as they're writing, and everyone just kept sort of looking at her when they would do quick read-throughs of scenes, like, 'Hmm, she's so Carmen.' And they mentioned that, but they were like, 'You know, we gotta make sure we do a process."

Kelly had Baram, who had never acted before, film a self-tape and did a session with her. "It's such a different skill set to learn about how to audition and basically what acting is," Kelly says. "We just kept going through the process, kept going through the process. And Benny was like, 'You know, I just have had this feeling in my gut since the beginning, like, 'Let's try Wally one more time.' And then it went to being like, 'Try Wally like four more times,' just because of getting the right videos and angles and warming up and making her know that she has it all. It's all within her, and it's just finally putting her with Benny and them reading opposite each other. The character just started to flow. And then when I saw the trailer, I was like, 'Wow, you know, it looks like she's always done this.' Like this is just like a natural fit."
What put Baram over the top was the fact that she was not over the top. Skinner wanted the show to feel grounded and natural. "This was real people overcompensating for the things that they are embarrassed or vulnerable about, and that truth really had to be underneath every single character with a coat of what they put forward," Kelly says.
She points to Peter, which was written for "an aggressive frat guy." "We saw a lot of reads like that that were very good, but we didn't see that little twinkle underneath that let us know that there's something a little bit deeper going on," she says. DiMarco surprised Kelly and her team by adding more texture to the role. "Adam DiMarco had been on The White Lotus as the son, a little bit sheepish, a little bit dorky. And then he auditioned, and we were all like, 'Wow, he's a really attractive, strong guy and also so funny.' He just like would throw in a rap and make us all laugh. And it was just kind of one of those processes of seeing thousands and thousands of actors audition and and lots and lots of discussions."
One casting Kelly had no involvement in was Charli XCX's. The pop star plays herself and also serves as executive music producer. Skinner merely approached her at a party. "I did not have to do a thing there. It was all Benny," Kelly says. "And another reason why my sister is going to go absolutely crazy when she sees this show. Charlie XCX is also her other favorite person on the planet. But that was great."
Kelly did try to go after another pop queen. "We did really want to get Chappell Roan. I think that would have been really cool for some part. We tried many times when she was touring."

Lil Wayne's ‘Tha Carter VI' album and tour mark a major return for the Hip Hop icon
Key Takeaways: Trending 13 BET Awards tribute performances that still give viewers chills 21 of the sexiest women alive, from Hip Hop to Hollywood 7 athletes whose style screams rap star energy Lil Wayne's new album, Tha Carter VI, blends multiple genres with features from Bono, Wyclef Jean and his own children. The 2025 'Carter VI Tour' spans 34 North American cities, kicking off with Weezy's first solo headlining show at Madison Square Garden. Despite skipping New Orleans, Wayne's team hints at a special Lil Weezyana Fest appearance to honor his hometown roots. After a seven-year wait, Lil Wayne has officially released Tha Carter VI, a 19-track project that both extends and redefines his legendary Carter series. The album arrived on Friday (June 6), the same day Wayne will take the stage at Madison Square Garden for his first-ever solo headlining performance at the iconic venue. Wayne's latest work blends old-school flair and forward-thinking experimentation. The album features an array of unexpected collaborators, including BigXthaPlug, Wyclef Jean, Andrea Bocelli, Kodak Black, 2 Chainz, MGK and two of Wayne's children. The project moves between trap, soul, rock, opera and gospel influences with confidence, reflecting a decades-long career marked by reinvention and range. 'This album is for the ones who've been riding with me through all Tha Carters. We takin' it further than ever before with this one,' Wayne said in a press release. 'C6 is here. I'm just bein' myself. Sorry for the wait.' Throughout Tha Carter VI, Lil Wayne leans into his status as a rap elder without losing the hunger that's kept him relevant. Standouts like 'Written History,' which closes the album with a powerful Muhammad Ali sample, and 'Bein Myself,' a collaboration with Mannie Fresh, reaffirm his lyrical sharpness and unshakable identity. Elsewhere, he showcases a willingness to evolve, pairing with U2's Bono and Jelly Roll on 'The Days' and 'Sharks,' respectively, or crossing into (familiar) rock territory on 'If I Played Guitar.' Wayne even reflects on his traumas, particularly on 'Maria,' where he raps about childhood abuse and his infamous self-inflicted gunshot wound at age 12. These moments provide rare glimpses behind the tattoos and shades. And despite the wide range of features, C6 remains centered on Wayne's voice, creativity and vulnerability. Much like the album, the 'Tha Carter VI Tour' looks to kick off with high energy (beginning with his aforementioned MSG show) and features over 30 dates across North America. Tyga, NoCap and Belly Gang Kushington will also provide support on select stops. Notably absent, however, is Wayne's hometown of New Orleans — something that's sparked social media speculation given his absence from the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show. Still, fans in the Crescent City may not be left out for long. Wayne's team has teased 'something special' for the next Lil Weezyana Fest, hinting that a more personal celebration is on the horizon. In the meantime, fans can get their fix through Wayne's online store, which features Tha Carter VI merch, vinyl bundles and more. Justin & Hailey Bieber's Prenup Details Finally Revealed Amid Reports He Could Get Half of Her Billion-Dollar Fortune
The speculation over Hailey and Justin Bieber's marriage has reached a fever pitch in the last few months. From reports about Justin's declining health, to his alleged money issues, to fans speculating he doesn't treat his wife right, without forgetting Kendall and Kylie Jenner reportedly trying to stage an intervention to save the marriage, there has been a lot of news. But throughout it all, the two have remained steady, or at least that's what they want us to believe. Now, however, it seems like remaining together would actually be the best for Hailey Bieber, financially speaking. The model-turned-entrepreneur did, after all, sell her beauty brand, Rhode, to e.l.f in a billion-dollar deal. And multiple sources told Page Six that the two never signed a prenup, so if they were ever to split, Justin could be entitled to half of her earnings. More from StyleCaster Justin Bieber Just Shared a Cryptic Post About 'Loyalty' After Rumors He & 'Not Happy' Hailey Are 'Getting Divorced' Hailey Bieber's Net Worth Revealed Amid Reports 'Broke' Justin Is Close to 'Financial Collapse' Related: Who did Justin Bieber date before Hailey Bieber? 'It's highly unusual for people of their stature to not have an agreement that governs their assets,' a top Hollywood divorce lawyer told Page Six. 'But sometimes people don't want to do it.' Moreover, the lawyer explained, 'Because they live in California, the state would have jurisdiction, and the law states that anything created during marriage is community property. If there is no prenup [or] postnuptial … agreement, this sounds like community property to me.' Of course, Bieber won't actually be taking home a billion dollars herself, as the deal is more complicated than that, but she's still getting a big payout. This is apparently not that strange, as some reports indicate she has become the breadwinner of the family late. Justin Bieber has not released a new album since 2021, but The Hollywood Reporter recently reported he is 'very close' to finishing a new project. Ironically, Bieber's entire catalogue, which he sold in 2023, would not be communal property, as Bieber's catalogue originated before their marriage. The singer has reportedly been having some money problems since he cancelled what was left of his 'Justice' tour in late 2022 after a diagnosis of Type 2 Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a facial paralysis disease. He reportedly lost out on an estimated $90 million in income by doing so. Rumors about the state of the couple's marriage resurfaced once again after Justin Bieber posted a questionable caption when it was announced Hailey would be on the June cover of Vogue. 'Yo this reminds me when Hailey and I got into a huge fight,' he explained on his Instagram. 'I told hails that she would never be on the cover of vogue. Yikes I know, so mean,' he said, adding an apology at the end that almost didn't feel like one, 'So baby u already know but forgive me for saying u wouldn't get a vogue cover cuz clearly i was sadly mistaken.' Afterwards, he replaced the caption with a series of emojis, '🤷🫵🏻🫶🏼🥹.' Hailey, however, responded to the rumors by telling Vogue: 'You would think after having a child, people would maybe move on, chill out a little bit, but no. So I guess these bitches are going to be mad.' So it looks like there's no trouble in paradise, and financially, that's probably a good thing.
