The Boston Red Sox's 2-1 series-opening win over the rival New York Yankees on Friday night provided much-needed momentum to a team that has fallen short of expectations early in the 2025 season. Despite the win, the Red Sox sit fourth in the AL East with a 35-36 record, 8.5 games behind the Yankees atop the division and two games out of a Wild Card spot.

As the trade deadline approaches, the Red Sox are looking increasingly likely to bolster their roster in hopes of making a late-season surge up the standings. But the team also has a number of pieces they could offer to other franchises with similar goals in mind.
According to Newsweek's Andrew Wright, Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman is considered a trade candidate for the New York Mets, who are looking to address their own bullpen issues.
"If the Red Sox continue to struggle, Chapman's one-year contract makes him an easy trade target, and the Mets have all the assets to get Chapman in the blue and orange," Wright wrote. "Chapman is having an excellent season in the Boston bullpen to the tune of a 1.59 ERA, 12 saves and 39 strikeouts in 31 appearances and 28 1/3 innings. His average fastball velocity sits at 99.2 mph, good for the 99th percentile."
"The addition of Chapman to the back end of the bullpen with Ryan Stanek and Edwin Diaz could be viewed as one of the best and hardest-throwing bullpen trios in the league," Wright continued.

Chapman, regarded as one of the hardest-throwing hurlers in MLB history, joined the Red Sox this offseason as a free agent and signed a one-year, $10.75 million contract with the team. He has previously played for six other MLB franchises: the Cincinnati Reds, Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Over the course of his 16-year MLB career, Chapman boasts a 58-47 record, 2.59 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 347 saves, placing him behind only Kenley Jansen (461 saves) and Craig Kimbrel (440) amongst active players in that statistic. He has also struck out 1,285 batters in 789 innings pitched across 828 relief appearances.
Chapman is a two-time World Series champion and a seven-time All-Star, in addition to being named the American League's Reliever of the Year in 2019.

IndyCar drivers Josef Newgarden and Louis Foster were in a dangerous crash on Sunday during the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology (WTT) Raceway in Madison, Illinois, just outside of St. Louis. The incident occurred about midway through the race when Foster lost control of his vehicle in the corner and collided with the wall. He spun around as he came down the track on the frontstretch. Foster spoke to FOX Sports about the wreck after he was released from the infield care center. "I got a bit of a wiggle ... got a bit too high and went into the marbles," Foster said. "I just couldn't stop the car from spinning and, obviously, a pretty scary impact with myself and Josef. I'm glad he is OK." Newgarden declined to speak after the incident. Kyle Kirkwood won the race, picking up his second consecutive win and third of the season. Only he and Alex Palou have won races on the IndyCar circuit this season. Palou still holds the lead in the IndyCar standings, just 73 points over Pato O'Ward and 75 points ahead of Kirkwood. Newgarden is in 16th and Foster is in 24th. "Nothing really to say, it's just crazy." Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw also reacted to the trade as he was told during an ESPN segment about the wild move. "How about that trade?
